Drilled thickness intersections include: S36-033 (vertical hole) * 231m at 4.49% Cu between 201m and 432m, including * 17m at 14.88% Cu between 211m and 228m, and * 10m at 10.06% Cu between 265m and 275m * 10m at 9.11% Cu between 283m and 293 meters. * Drill hole S36-033 was abandoned in mineralisation at 463m before attaining target depth. It is planned to recover or to redrill the hole to target depth of 500 meters. * Copper assay results also received for other ‘step-out’ holes S36-029, S36-030 and S36-031. Significant drilled thickness intercepts include: S36-029 (inclined -70º towards 270º) * 12m at 0.61% Cu between 246m and 258m, * 22m at 0.89% Cu between 349m and 371m, * 10m at 0.39% Cu between 383m and 393m, * 6m at 0.48% Cu between 395m and 401m, * 6m at 0.66% Cu between 576m and 582 meters S36-030 (inclined -80º towards 090º) * 2m at 0.93% Cu between 214m and 216m, * 2m at 0.86% Cu between 253m and 255 meters S36-031 (inclined -60º towards 325º) * 4m at 0.37% Cu between 329m and 333m * 2m at 0.50% Cu between 340m and 342m * 1m at 0.80% Cu between 346m and 347 meters. * The drilling component of the Phase 5 exploration program is nearing completion having completed 15 holes for 7,684.39 meters. * An additional hole has been planned for drilling in Phase 5 which is targeting a nearby anomaly (P5_014) at Kitumba. Blackthorn Resources Limited (ASX: BTR) (“the Company” or “Blackthorn Resources”) is pleased to report receipt of additional copper results from the Phase 5 exploration program at the Mumbwa Project in Central Zambia. The Company has intersected the best copper intersections recorded to date at the Company’s 100% held Mumbwa Project. These results were from the Kitumba mineral resource area in drill hole S36-033 which is reported herein. Assay results were also received from other completed drill holes S36-029, S36-030 and S36-031 as shown in Figure 1. The Mumbwa district is being explored by the Company for Iron Oxide Copper-Gold (IOCG) style of mineralisation as follow-up to the maiden inferred mineral resource estimated at Kitumba on 19 October 2009. The follow-up Phase 5 drilling program commenced in August 2011 to core drill 16 targets for approximately 8,700 meters. To date 15 holes for 7,684.39m have been drilled as shown in Table 1, with 2 holes currently in progress. Ongoing review of drilled targets upon receipt of results has required some additional drilling to retest abandoned hole S36-033 and to reconsider other planned targets. Another target area P5_013/P5_014, was originally proposed at the commencement of the Phase 5 program on the basis of a recorded copper intersection in a previous drill hole KD-3 and an associated geophysical gravity anomaly which was identified in the recently reprocessed FALCON data. Previous drill hole KD-3 was drilled in 1999 by Billiton with the best mineralised interval reported in historical reports being 61m at 0.57% Cu between 130m and 191 meters. The Company has reviewed the data in conjunction with geophysical data and considers a follow-up drill hole is warranted to further evaluate this previous intersection. Target P5_014 is scheduled for drilling to a depth of 500 meters. The revised Phase 5 program will now include drilling a total of 19 holes for approximately 9,700 meters. It is anticipated the drilling component for Phase 5 will be completed by mid-March 2012, with the receipt of copper and gold assays to continue for approximately 6 weeks thereafter. Phase 5 Copper assay results have been received from an additional 4 drill holes completed on the Kitumba mineral resource area. These include ‘infill’ hole S36-033, as well as ‘step-out’ holes S36-029, S36-030 and S36-031. Very encouraging copper results have been intersected in drill hole S36-033 which represents the best recorded copper assay results received to date from the Kitumba mineral resource area. These extremely high-grade copper intercepts correlate well with the current model for the Kitumba mineral resource area, which has been interpreted to contain a high-grade copper rich core. The recent results are being integrated into the existing Mumbwa data-set for remodelling at the completion of the drilling program with the aim of possibly updating the Kitumba mineral resource category, tonnes and grade. Sampling and assaying of the Phase 5 drill core is following the standard site protocol with samples of half core being submitted to the AH Knight Laboratory in Kitwe, Zambia for preparation and copper analysis. A representative sample split is sent to ACME Analytical Laboratories in Vancouver, Canada for gold analysis. A 0.25% Cu cut-off grade is applied when delineating the drilled thickness intervals of mineralisation, with weighted average grades reported. True-widths are not quoted as further work is required to determine the geometry of the mineralisation. No upper limit has been applied to copper grades in exploration results. S36-033 Drill hole S36-033 was designed as an ‘infill’ hole targeting the central, high-grade core of the interpreted Kitumba mineral resource area. The hole was drilled vertically on the western side of the high-grade zone to test for continuity of mineralisation and down-dip extension of the deposit. The planned target depth for S36-033 was 500 meters. However, at 463.36m the drill rods became stuck. Several attempts to free drilling equipment were not successful and some equipment remains trapped in the hole. The Company is evaluating its various options including an attempt to recover remaining lost equipment before continuing to drill to the planned target depth, or placing a wedge in the drill hole at ~200m depth and allowing drilling to continue adjacent to the existing hole until the planned depth. An alternative being considered is to redrill the hole from surface at a new collar location with the aim of further intersecting the high-grade copper core to prove correlation and repeatability of grades, and importantly to determine the vertical and lateral extent of the high-grade zone. A series of 438 samples were taken over the entire 463m length of drill core achieved. However, only copper assay results for the upper 433m have been received and are reported in Table 2. Assay results for the redrilled interval will be reported upon receipt by the Company. Using a 0.25% copper cut-off, the following drilled thickness intercepts were identified as shown in Table 2. S36-029 Drill hole S36-029 is situated towards the south of the interpreted mineral resource area and was drilled at an angle of 70 degrees towards the west. The drill hole was testing for along strike extensions to the Kitumba mineral resource in the south. A series of 389 samples were taken along the entire length of drill core. Using a 0.25% Cu cut-off the following drilled thickness intervals were delineated as shown in Table 3. Of significance, drill hole S36-029 has intersected copper mineralisation at several intervals down the hole with some mineralised zones greater than 10m drilled thickness. Copper assays are in-line with the grades estimated for the inferred mineral resource in 2009. However, this hole is situated outside the previous mineral resource area. S36-030 S36-030 is a ‘step-out’ drill hole situated on the western side of the Kitumba mineral resource area and was drilled at an angle of 80 degrees towards the east. The drill hole was terminated at an EOH depth of 506.5 meters. A series of 366 samples were taken along the entire length of drill core. The drill hole was designed to test an area of the mineral resource which was not part of the previous mineral resource estimate. The drill hole was targeting an extension to mineralisation where there was a deficiency in the drilling data. Only low tenure copper assays were identified as shown in Table 4. S36-031 Drill hole S36-031 is situated towards the north-western side of the Kitumba mineral resource area and was drilled at an angle of 60 degrees towards the north-west. The target was derived from reinterpretation of the FALCON geophysical data-set which identified a gravity and magnetic anomaly which warranted follow-up by drilling. A series of 383 drill core samples were taken along the entire length of the drill core. Using a 0.25% Cu cut-off, a range of mineralised intervals were identified as shown in Table 5 which quotes drilled thickness intervals and weighted average copper grades. Only copper grades of low tenure were identified. Managing Director, Mr Scott Lowe said “It is genuinely exciting and a very important achievement to receive such high-grade copper results from drill hole S36-033. These results are the best recorded copper assays from the Kitumba area to date, and clearly demonstrates the high-grade potential of the Mumbwa district. It is a credit to the exploration team who have been working hard and are dedicated to uncovering the potential of the Kitumba mineral resource area. The Company eagerly anticipates the redrilling of this target to the planned depths or beyond, and other results to further build on the database that will allow the economic viability of the Kitumba area to be evaluated, with particular focus on the high-grade copper core.” Notes: Copper assays were performed by fully ISO17025 accredited AH Knight Laboratory in Kitwe, Zambia. Samples were analysed for total copper by 4-acid digest and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and acid soluble copper (ASCu) by cold acid leach and AAS finish. A Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) program includes chain of custody protocol, a systematic submittal of 20% QA/QC samples including field duplicates, field blanks and certified reference samples into the flow of samples submitted to the laboratory as well as re-assaying of the mineralised zones.
