The Nasdaq-100 Index is one of the most popular indices in the marketplace today representing 100 securities traded during regular trading hours - 9:30 a.m. ET to 4:00 p.m. ET. To provide a gauge or indicator during the Pre-Market (8:00 a.m. ET - 9:30 a.m. ET), Nasdaq has created the Nasdaq-100 Pre-Market Indicator.
The Nasdaq-100 Pre-Market Indicator uses the same calculation as the Nasdaq-100 Index during regular market hours but calculates the indicator based on the last sale of Nasdaq-100 Index securities during the Pre-Market. If a security does not trade during the Pre-Market, the formula pulls the last sale from the previous days’ 4:00 close. These data points are then calculated accordingly to the current Nasdaq-100 Index formula as a modified market capitalization weighted index.
Investors may trade in the Pre-Market (8:00-9:30 a.m. ET) and the After Hours Market (4:00-6:30 p.m. ET). Participation by Market Makers and ECNs is strictly voluntary and as a result may offer less liquidity and inferior prices. Stock prices may also move more quickly in this environment. Investors who anticipate trading during these times are strongly advised to use limit orders.
