MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Veritas Software on Tuesday reported a 68 percent increase in first-quarter pro forma profits from the year before, citing strength in business across the board. The software developer (VRTS) also beat earnings expectations by a penny, coming in at 21 cents a share in the quarter, or $87 million before purchase accounting adjustments. Last year, pro forma profits reached $52 million, or 12 cents a share. Sales rose by 58 percent to $387 million, from $245 million a year ago. The company also sees the possibility of a slowing economy hurting sales -- the range for annual revenue growth was widened to 35 to 50 percent from 45 to 50 percent. Shares of Veritas dropped by 80 cents to $56.78 in after-hours trading, after rising by 5 percent during the regular session.
