Indentix rises on Compaq using fingerprinting tech
NEW YORK, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Investors gave Identix Inc. (AMEX:IDX - news) the thumbs
up on Monday, after Compaq Computer Corp., (NYSE:CPQ - news) the world's No. 1
personal computer maker, said it would offer Identix's fingerprint identification technology to
eliminate the need for passwords in its notebook computers.
Identix's shares rose on Monday, closing up 23 percent, or $2.04 to $10.79, making it one of
the top percentage gainers on the American Stock Exchange.
In July of 1998, Compaq offered the biometric technology on its desktop computers, and is now offering the PC card on notebook
computers.
The card uses a tiny camera to convert a fingerprint image to a ``map'' that is unique to the user. The map or data in encrypted
and stored, which, the companies said, allows users to logon securely and quickly. The fingerprint reader slides out of the card, the
user presses a finger on the sensor, and slides it back in, Identix said.
Compaq said there was a market for the technology in the corporate market, with close to 40 percent of all calls to corporate
technical help centres involving a lost or missing password.
``The Biometrics PC card can result in significant time and cost savings for IT (information technology) departments,'' Compaq
said in a statement.
Compaq shares closed up $0.21 to $25.41 on the New York Stock Exchange.
