Think AI-first, cloud-native and zero-touch

16.09.25 18:33

September 14, 2025

Gone are the days when you could "AI-wash" your slide deck and call it innovation.
Modern platforms must be:

AI-first: Not as a bolt-on, but as your central nervous system. AI should be the thing telling your network what it needs before it knows it needs it.

Cloud-native: Elastic, modular, and agile enough to spin up services faster than your legal team can say “compliance.”

A future-ready telco must think beyond internal innovation and embrace a collaborative developer ecosystem while making security and trust non-negotiable. Exposing secure, standardized APIs and providing sandboxes for partners, startups, and developers can accelerate service creation and expand the value of the network.

At the same time, safeguarding this platform requires a robust security posture built on Zero Trust Architecture, AI-driven threat detection, and strong data governance. The ability to combine openness for innovation with uncompromising security will define which operators lead and which are left behind.

A key mention: Technology alone is rarely the obstacle to transformation. More often, entrenched business models and organizational culture slow change. These barriers must be addressed deliberately. The most effective transformations begin with a focused approach – starting where the network and the organization are most ready, whether that is in cloudification, virtualization, operations or deployment.

The destination is clear: a simplified, programmable, intelligent platform that delivers new services, richer experiences, and diversified revenue streams. Around the world, operators are already demonstrating what is possible with disaggregated networks, open APIs and platform-based monetization models.

We have the assets. We have the data. We have the reach. Now, let’s build the platform.

European Marketplace Expansion:

Rakuten France Announces European Marketplace Expansion: Spain as the First Step in a Strategic Rollout

Paris, September 15, 2025 – Rakuten France, a leading player in French e-commerce and a pioneer in the circular economy, today announces its international marketplace expansion, with Spain as the first strategic market. This new marketplace will offer Spanish consumers and merchants an e-commerce experience that combines accessibility, high-quality service and responsible consumption, powered by Rakuten France’s technological expertise, particularly in artificial intelligence. This marks the beginning of an ambitious, phased development plan for Rakuten France’s marketplace operations across Europe.
Driving international growth with an optimistic vision for e-commerce
Rakuten France is reaching a pivotal milestone in its journey by embarking on international expansion. This strategic decision to enter the Spanish market aligns with its optimistic vision for e-commerce, supported by a successful model already proven in France. As a digital, inclusive shopping mall, Rakuten France enables safe interactions between buyers, sellers and brands. Its unique partnership approach ensures that the Rakuten France marketplace platform never competes with its merchant “clients.”
This expansion is built upon three strategic pillars that drive Rakuten's success in French e-commerce:

•§Supporting merchants in their digital transformation and logistics with innovative, tailored solutions such as Rakuten Fulfillment Network (RFN), an international network of logistics experts handling complete order management – from storage to shipping, tracking and returns. 99.8% of orders placed before 2 p.m. and handled by the Rakuten Fulfillment Network are delivered to their destination within 24 hours.
•§Boosting purchasing power, embodied by the Club R cashback program, the most generous loyalty program in French e-commerce, which has already redistributed over €200 million to shoppers.
•§Championing responsible consumption with a diverse selection of second-hand products, including pre-owned and refurbished items.
Rakuten France’s expansion into Spain represents a tangible first step in scaling this unique and virtuous model across Europe.

Spain: a key market and the starting point for a bold strategy
With over 30 million online consumers and an e-commerce market that exceeded 95 billion euros in 2024, up 13.1% year-on-year (CNMC), Spain offers tremendous potential for Rakuten France’s next phase of growth.
The rollout follows a staged approach. From today, Rakuten France offers an optimized version of its marketplace in Spain, with two clear goals: to provide Spanish consumers with attractive prices and deliver an outstanding shopping experience.
The initial offering focuses on key consumer product categories, such as tech and home appliances. To ensure fast and reliable service for both sellers and buyers, Rakuten France will leverage its robust Rakuten Fulfillment Network (RFN) and strengthen its offering through enhanced affiliate partnerships, boosting the platform’s visibility and competitiveness.
This initiative draws on Rakuten France’s proven artificial intelligence expertise. AI plays a pivotal role in:
•§Automatic, context-aware translation of thousands of product listings
•§Continuous optimisation of the search function, exploring semantic search.
•§Adaptation of navigation interfaces to meet Spanish consumer preferences.
Product offerings will be expanded gradually, integrating the features that have driven the success of Rakuten France. Spanish consumers will gain access to the Club R cashback program, allowing them to earn money back on their purchases. Rakuten’s second-hand marketplace will also grow, featuring refurbished and pre-owned items across a variety of categories (culture, tech, appliances, gaming and more) to meet growing demands for sustainable consumption and align with environmental challenges.
Cédric Dufour, CEO of Rakuten France and Rakuten TV, stated, "This expansion marks a major turning point for Rakuten France. It also reflects our vision of e-commerce as a source of value for all and a driver of positive impact. We are entering the Spanish market with a clear strategy, building on our expertise, particularly in supporting sellers. The integration of AI into our approach, designed and implemented by our in-house teams, reflects our agility and ability to innovate. We have an ambitious roadmap, with the resources, vision and team to make it a reality. We are particularly keen to forge strong partnerships with Spanish retailers to grow together in this dynamic market."
Rakuten France is committed to providing Spanish buyers with a high level of security and comprehensive after-sales support. As a trusted third party, the digital shopping mall maintains stringent standards for secure payments and the prevention of fraud and counterfeiting.

Rakuten: Staying Bullish On EBITDA Beat And Re-Rating Potential

Aug. 12, 2025

Summary

I maintain my buy rating on Rakuten, driven by strong Q2 EBITDA and the presence of multiple catalysts.

The Mobile unit outperformed, achieving positive EBITDA and subscriber growth, with ARPU boosted by high-volume data users.

Valuation discounts should narrow as Rakuten demonstrates intra-group synergies and accelerates deleveraging.

I'm still rating Rakuten Group, Inc.  (4755.T) as Buy. The presence of valuation expansion catalysts and its above-consensus Q2 EBITDA are my key investment considerations for this stock.

Last Friday, RKUNY revealed its latest quarterly financials.

Its normalized EBITDA surged +54.5 percent YoY to ¥0.103T for the Apr-Jun period. This was equivalent to a 4% beat based on S&P Capital IQ consensus.

The "Mobile Network Operations" or "MNO" unit's outperformance was the major driver of RKUNY's stronger-than-anticipated showing.

The firm has traditionally positioned itself as a value-focused mobile operator, boasting affordable subscription packages. The pricing gap between Rakuten and its counterparts in the wireless sector has widened in light of recent developments. It's very likely that RKUNY's comparatively cheaper offerings have become more popular.

Separately, the rest of the group also did well.

Core operating profit for the FinTech and Internet Services divisions rose 12.2% and 8.0% to ¥43B and ¥19B, respectively, in Q2'25. The former's internet finance arm, Rakuten Bank, benefited from rate hikes in Japan; the latter's overseas sub-segment has been actively engaged in expense optimization initiatives.

I don't see any reason to change my bullish opinion of RKUNY. Its results were impressive, and MNO is on track to deliver positive EBITDA on a full-year basis.

Rakuten rounds out the list with Morgan Stanley highlighting continued mobile subscriber and profit growth that appears undervalued in the current stock price. The mobile division benefits from an enhanced pricing advantage amid competitors’ price hikes. Analysts suggest positive stock price movement even if Rakuten eventually follows industry trends with its own price increases.

The company’s e-commerce division continues expanding sales and profits with structural market growth, while its financial services segment demonstrates clear synergies with e-commerce operations and stable profit expansion across business lines.

Rakuten has received positive analyst coverage, with Nomura upgrading the company to Buy and JPMorgan initiating coverage with an Overweight rating, both citing growth prospects in its mobile segment.

Der japanische E-Commerce-Riese Rakuten verstärkt sein Spiel in Europa

15. Sep. 2025

Open RAN revenue debate: Was 2024 a year of growth or decline?

By  Catherine Sbeglia Nin
July 1, 2025

According to Téral Research, Open RAN revenue grew in 2024 — albeit by single digits — contradicting some other firms’ findings

Last week, RCR Wireless News reported that a partnership between Rakuten Symphony and Tejas Networks aiming to accelerate the global expansion of open, interoperable 5G networks could be a boon for Open RAN, which has so far had a disappointing financial showing, according to many analysts. In that story, we cited data from Mobile Experts indicating Open RAN revenue fell by 83% in 2024 compared with 2023.

In response, Stéphane Téral founder and chief analyst at Téral Research, contacted RCR to dispute that picture. (In our defense, Stefan Pongratz, VP of RAN market research at Dell’Oro Group, also noted a decline in the overall RAN market during 2024, calling it the “steepest full-year decline in more than 20 years.”)

But, according to Téral, Open RAN revenue actually grew in 2024 — albeit by single digits — contradicting some of these other findings and suggesting stronger momentum than previously reported. “[This growth was] sustained by AT&T in the driver’s seat with its large rollout, followed by smaller footprints at Deutsche Telekom, Telus and Vodafone. In the meantime, both Rakuten Symphony and Rakuten Mobile also contributed to the growth,” Téral told RCR. He added that AT&T alone “created a big jump that reinvigorated the whole market,” accounting for 30% of total Open RAN revenue in 2024.

Téral noted that these deployments weren’t just trials but live commercial rollouts: Deutsche Telekom with Nokia and Fujitsu in Germany; Telus replacing Huawei gear with Samsung’s Open vRAN (vDU, vCU, O-RU) and BMI’s O-RU; and Vodafone progressing in markets like Romania ahead of a planned pan-European rollout covering 170,000 sites.

He emphasized that, “while at least 100-plus CSPs are testing Open RAN worldwide, more than 20 are in the commercial rollout stage worldwide.”

Looking ahead, Téral sees Open RAN at a tipping point: “We are entering a phase of steady mainstream adoption, and the market should at least double in size this year, fueled by new deals that will add to the ongoing activity led by AT&T and the other Tier 1 CSPs. 2024 saw a robust RFI [Request for Information] and RFP [Request for Proposal] activity, driven by Tier 1 brownfield CSPs, [so] deals are being done.”

He pointed to contract cycles as a catalyst: “We are at the end of the first 5G RAN cycle. More than 100 contracts are up for renewal, and every single RFI/RFP included an Open RAN component… Open RAN is real, performing and moving forward; there is no way back.”

Téral predicts that by 2030, Open RAN will account for 30% of total RAN spending and will be a key element of 6G architectures.

ORAN/vRAN Report - Market Size & Forecas

20.09.25 13:59
Open RAN/vRAN Report - Market Size & Forecast, September 2025

ABSTRACT
KEY TAKEAWAYS: 1H25 IS UP YOY AND THE FUTURE IS LOOKING UP!
THE OPEN RAN/VRAN GREW 52% YOY IN 1H25
AS A RESULT, WE CONFIDENTLY MAINTAIN OUR ASSESMENT THAT THE 2-YEAR LONG LULL IS OVER
AT&T ALONE DROVE THE BULK OF THE GROWTH, RAKUTEN MOBILE AND TELUS ADDED SOME FUEL TO IT
On the small footprint deployment side, 1&1, Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone were the key contributors
All this led to a major vendor leadership board shake up, Ericsson moved to #1 out of nowhere, distantly followed by NEC, Samsung and 1Finity
Ericsson, NEC and Samsung are both top RU and CU/DU suppliers
NTT DOCOMO REMAINS THE WOLRD'S LARGEST OPEN RAN BROWNFIELD FOOTPRINT
TRIALS, TESTING AND CERTIFICATION EFFORTS ARE CHUGGING ALONG WHILE THE RFP/RFI SURGE IN 2024 HAS ABATED IN 1H25
AS WE HAVE BEEN SAYING SINCE JUNE 2021, 2025 IS THE TRIGGER YEAR, READY FOR TAKEOFF?
THIS YEAR, WE EXPECT ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT BUMP FROM THE AT&T ROLLOUT, WHICH HAS NOT CHANGED OUR FORECAST UPDATED IN 1Q24
2025 WILL BE THE GLOBAL SWITCH YEAR
Long delays for Vodafone Spring 6 are not affecting our 2025 forecast
The open vRAN penetration of the global traditional RAN sales is expected to hit 30% in 2029, up from 4.5% in 2024
With AT&T in the driver's seat and direct U.S. government funding, North America is becoming the world's largest open vRAN market
Among the countries ploughing money into open RAN, the U.S. is pushing for global dominance
Consequently, North America is poised to hit the 20% RAN sales penetration bar in 2025 and reach 63% by 2030
Openness, scalability and innovation remain the 3 chief drivers
We believe nearly all commercial open RAN networks will be running RAN functions on software
vRAN and open RAN are 2 different configurations
Boost Mobile and Rakuten Mobile brought cloud RAN to prime time
Finally, it's worth noting that open RAN started as a NON-VIRTUAL architecture

Cabify achieves record results in 2024: EBITDA of 30 million euros despite the drop in turnover

28 May 2025
Lidia Vega

Cabify closes 2024 with a gross operating profit (EBITDA) of 30 million euros and a turnover of 760 million and recovers pre-pandemic levels.

While studying its IPO, Cabify faces tension with the taxi sector over 8,500 new VTC licences and accelerates its commitment to electric cars.

Cabify has established itself and this is demonstrated by its economic results. After last year it managed to reach the breakeven or breakeven threshold after the fall caused by the pandemic, the Spanish company closed 2024 in the black.

Last year it achieved its highest level of profitability with an EBITDA of 34 million dollars (about 30 million euros). A figure that last year they decided not to share.

In addition, they have also achieved a turnover of 858 million dollars (860 million euros, thus recovering their pre-pandemic levels, but 4% below last year, when they recorded 899.1 million dollars. The company states that, "if the exchange rate effect in Argentina is isolated, turnover remains in line with the previous year."

Similarly, the company's gross profit has risen to $127 million (€112 million), exceeding the $111.1 million (€98 million) recorded in 2023. However, the company did not give its net profit or cash flow results by claiming that "they do not have the audited numbers yet."

Full-scale commercial deployment reduces power consumption by up to 24% in optical transmission equipment

Tokyo, September 19, 2025 – Rakuten Mobile, Inc. today announced it has become the first operator in the Asia-Pacific region to deploy Nokia’s remote power-saving solution for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical transmission equipment in its 4G and 5G commercial network. Developed to meet Rakuten Mobile’s requirements, the solution significantly enhances network sustainability and operational efficiency.

The power-saving solution enables remote control of unused expansion modules within optical transmission equipment installed at thousands of Rakuten Mobile edge data centers nationwide. By optimizing the power consumption of these modules, the solution is expected to reduce the power consumption of Nokia's optical transmission equipment installed in these edge data centers by approximately 24% compared to conventional levels, significantly contributing to lower electricity costs and CO₂ emissions. Additionally, by optimizing resource allocation remotely, the solution also helps reduce network operational costs.

The Nokia optical transmission equipment equipped with this solution is characterized by scalability, simplicity and security. Nokia provides scalable solutions ranging from the network edge to metro, long-haul and subsea networks. By streamlining everything from network operations to service delivery, Nokia is deploying smarter, more automated networks that reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO). This enables Rakuten Mobile to greatly improve network flexibility and efficiency.

Hiroshi Takeshita, Vice Chief Technology Officer of Rakuten Mobile, commented, “As networks become increasingly sophisticated, managing rising power consumption and operational costs has become a critical challenge. The deployment of this remote power-saving solution, developed in close partnership with Nokia, represents a significant step towards more sustainable networks. Rakuten Mobile is pushing the boundaries of flexible and scalable next-generation networks by embracing Open RAN and virtualization technologies. We remain committed to integrating innovative tech to optimize energy consumption and achieve sustainable network operations.”

Ron Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Nokia’s Optical Networks business, commented, "We are proud to collaborate with Rakuten Mobile to deliver the Asia-Pacific region’s first remote power-saving feature for DWDM optical transmission equipment in its 4G and 5G commercial network. This innovation marks a significant step forward in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, while also lowering network operating costs. We look forward to building on this partnership to further advance sustainable network operations.”

Rakuten Mobile and Nokia will continue to strengthen their partnership to promote sustainable network operations and reduce environmental impact through the introduction of cutting-edge technologies. Both companies will continue to monitor the operational status of the power-saving solution and drive further technological development for enhanced power savings and network optimization.

Space & AI: Rakuten Mobile's next frontiers

23.09.25 10:34

What happens when satellites, AI, and mobile phones converge? At the recent Rakuten AI Optimism conference, three industry leaders came together to discuss how space tech and AI can reshape telecommunications in Japan and beyond.

The panel featured Rakuten Mobile co-CEOs Sharad Sriwastawa and Kazuhiro Suzuki, along with Rakuten Mobile President, Shunsuke Yazawa, taking on the theme Space & AI in Telecom’s Next Frontier: Rakuten Mobile’s Path to No. 1 Mobile Carrier. The big takeaway: Rakuten Mobile is differentiating itself from competitors with a software-driven mindset, an embrace of AI for sustainable connectivity, and mobile network coverage directly from space.

From roaming patchwork to Open RAN across Japan

“We started with phase one, only covering metropolitan areas, and the rest was covered with our roaming partner. But now we have almost full nationwide coverage,” Sriwastawa said. “We are the biggest Open RAN network operator in the world, with more than 340,000 cell sites.”
As the global telecom pioneer of building, deploying, and operating an Open RAN (radio access network) platform, Rakuten Mobile is able to deliver both cost savings in network operations and consumer benefits.

“We saved 40% on capex and we are saving 30% on opex. This allows us to give a discount to our customers,” Sriwastawa told the conference. “Absolutely no throttling; it’s a real unlimited plan.”

The results of Rakuten Mobile’s gambit are clear: subscribers consume an average of more than 30GB each month – three times that of rival carriers. Independent firm OpenSignal has also named Rakuten Mobile as the global leader in key network operator metrics, including 5G upload speeds, voice app and games experience.

“When we started, nobody imagined the era of 100GB a month,” Yazawa observed. “Today our customers already use over 30GB on average. Usage is growing at an astonishing pace.”
Perks of a digital-driven approach

Rakuten Mobile’s cloud-native and software-centric approach allow engineers to tap into the power of AI for maximum efficiency, Sriwastawa explained. “AI enables more intelligent operations.”

In a traditional network, hardware trouble at a site would necessitate a trip from a technician for repair. Rakuten Mobile’s design allows the system to automatically shift workloads between servers in case of hardware failure. “Auto-detection, auto-ticket creation and probably in most cases, auto-resolution, auto-healing.”

“From now, AI will become your concierge. It will predict what you want and offer it to you before you ask.”

Sriwastawa revealed that they are already using historical data to help predict failures before they happen. Rakuten Mobile’s autonomous network operations, he noted, is at “level 3.5” and well on the way to becoming a fully autonomous network in the near future, while most global peers remain at level “2.5 or 3.”

AI is also making its way to the consumer side, as Rakuten embeds new AI-enabled services into its Link communications app. “We are integrating our customer care app with AI, which will have AI agents resolving the queries of customers automatically.”

Smarter, more sustainable services with Rakuten AI

Leveraging the power of Rakuten’s AI tech, the team is taking things even further, highlighting a transformation from reactive to anticipatory functionality: “Up until now, people asked AI questions and got answers,” Suzuki explained. “From now, AI will become your concierge. It will predict what you want and offer it to you before you ask.”

Retail planning is another area AI is proving advantageous, with analysts crunching data from across the broader Rakuten ecosystem to choose store locations that maximize coverage and convenience. Physical touchpoints are also in the works, as Sriwastawa introduced new AI-driven self-service kiosks: “Customers can basically get a SIM or e-SIM in a couple of minutes, something which usually takes about half an hour to an hour.”

On the sustainability front, Rakuten Mobile is making use of a RAN Intelligent Controller to dial radio capacity up or down depending on demand. This can mean shutting down small-scale base stations during the night in office districts, or reducing the number of active cell sites when network traffic is low.

The goal is to cut down on electricity consumption without degrading the customer experience, Sriwastawa said. “This year we have a target to reduce our energy consumption by 20%. We are close to 15% already.”

5G standalone: What’s it all about?

Rakuten Mobile is preparing to launch its 5G standalone (SA) network, allowing devices to connect directly to a 5G core instead of relying on 4G infrastructure in the background.

Sriwastawa says that this upgrade will enable far lower latency – less than ten milliseconds; fast enough to make video calls or cloud gaming feel instantaneous – while also paving the way for unique use cases like network slicing, which allows carriers to carve out dedicated lanes of connectivity.

“We can create a slice for first responders which will have better connectivity and priority,” he explained. The same technology could also power consumer features: “Using our Link app, if the user wants to have a higher throughput to watch something, they can say, grant me a slice of 50 Mbps for one hour. This can be guaranteed.”

To supply the new 5G core, Rakuten Mobile has announced partnerships with Cisco, Nokia, and F5. The partnerships promise to extend Rakuten Mobile’s broader pitch: that a fully cloud-native, AI-integrated core can unlock faster speeds, better reliability, and more innovative products than what was possible on legacy architecture.

“Through the power of 5G, AI, and strategic partnerships with leading innovators like Cisco, Nokia, and F5, we are empowering customers in Japan with state-of-the-art, secure, and sustainable mobile connectivity.”

The next frontier: Rakuten Mobile from space

The panel then turned the audience’s attention in a new direction: the sky. President Yazawa framed non-terrestrial coverage (connectivity directly from space) as the next revolution in telecom.

“With broadband from space we can achieve 100% coverage of the land and sea. That means data will continue to flow even after tsunamis or earthquakes.” – Rakuten Mobile President, Shunsuke Yazawa
Rakuten Mobile continues to work with AST SpaceMobile, launching satellite antenna arrays “36 times larger than Starlink” with the aim of bringing broadband from orbit from 2026. Unlike most current satellite services, which support only text messages and emergency calls, these giant arrays are designed to deliver full broadband coverage directly to regular smartphones.

This new capability has the potential to change not only disaster response, but everyday connectivity, making broadband service as ubiquitous as GPS. “We will soon cover the entire land area,” explained Yazawa. “Even the sea, remote islands, Hokkaido’s wetlands – places humans don’t usually go.”

A crucial differentiator

Rakuten Mobile has carved out a distinctive strategy: use Open RAN architecture to bring down costs, pass the savings onto customers, and layer AI into every aspect of the business – from predictive maintenance to SIM card vending machines. Sriwastawa thinks that the next five years will be a crucial period for Rakuten Mobile.

“From 2025-30, before 6G arrives, we have to create a differentiator,” he stressed. “And from a technology perspective, the biggest opportunities are AI, and how the non-terrestrial network and terrestrial networks will work together.”
