This is the second change to Rakuten Trade’s trading tool in the US.

In August 2022, the platform announced that investors could choose to trade in either ringgit or US dollar through their foreign currency settlement services.

Since May 2017, Rakuten Trade has activated over 265,000 accounts and handled over RM115 billion in trading. Its clients’ assets under administration has surpassed RM3.7 billion.

Rakuten Securities, a part of the Japanese conglomerate Rakuten Group, released its results for the three months between January and March, reporting yearly growth across all major parameters. It closed the quarter with a net income of over JPY 3.8 billion, a year-over-year increase of 123 percent.

Rakuten Securities is one of the oldest and largest retail brokerages in Japan. It has more than 8 million general securities customer accounts. Last year, the company started accepting orders for US stock.

After more than doubling in 2022, Open RAN revenue growth was in the 10 to 20 percent range in the first quarter while the vRAN market advanced 20 to 30 percent.

Positive developments in the Asia Pacific region were dragged down by more challenging comparisons in the North America region.

Rakuten’s wireless tech subsidiary begins hiring for new R&D base in Toronto

The Japanese conglomerate’s wireless subsidiary plans to build its second major research centre in Canada, Rakuten Symphony CEO Tareq Amin said during The Logic’s virtual event on open radio access network (ORAN) technology. Rakuten Symphony is already working through the corporate sibling that bought the Canada-based Kobo e-reader company and maintains operations here, he said, but will incorporate a new company within weeks and is looking for developers. He didn’t specify how many, but said he expects to have about 30 per cent of the company’s R&D in North America.

JPY270 billion ($ 1.92 billion) lower capex of Rakuten between 2023 and 2025

As reported by Light Reading, Rakuten’s capex is now forecasted to be JPY300 billion between 2023 and 2025, down from an initial projection of JPY570 billion. The reduction in capex is partly attributed to the new agreement with KDDI.

On May 20, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan, and President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. of the United States, met for the third in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit.

In a Joint Leaders’ Statement following the Summit, it was announced that the Quad will partner with the government of Palau to establish a deployment of Open RAN, the first in the Pacific. The goal of this initiative is to modernize Palau’s national mobile network, establish an Open RAN deployment in partnership with local stakeholders, and support its sustainable operation. As part of the agreement, the United States Trade and Development Agency will fund a technical assistance grant to scope the size and scale of the project, the Australian Government will support the project, and Quad partners may provide further support.

The Quad leaders also welcomed the release of the Open RAN Security Report outlining cybersecurity considerations associated with using Open RAN as an approach to developing network architecture. The report notes that Open RAN offers important cybersecurity advantages, that risks sometimes attributed to Open RAN are common to traditional RAN deployments as well, and that these risks can be mitigated and managed through the recommendations presented in the report. The report will inform Quad members’ domestic and shared approaches to Open RAN security priorities and will also serve as a global resource to support adoption of open, interoperable, and trusted network architectures.
