Stocks: Nikkei Opens Higher On Buybacks Amid Hope Of Steps For Strong Yen
TOKYO (Kyodo)--Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday with investors buying back shares deemed oversold as they watched closely the response of the Japanese government in tackling a sharply stronger yen.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 163.26 points, or 1.80 percent, from Friday to 9,244.78. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 13.77 points, or 1.70 percent, to 824.78. The Second Section also advanced.
Shares of major exporters like Nissan Motor and Sony rebounded sharply as the dollar traded at the mid- to upper 86 yen level, compared with a 14-year low in the upper 84 yen level marked at one point on Friday.
Investors are waiting for details on budget measures Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama ordered on Sunday to tackle the yen's appreciation and equity declines with attention also focused on an upcoming meeting this week between Hatoyama and Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa, brokers said.
Major gainers included real estate, banking and machinery issues while only the paper and pulp sector declined.
