Nokia, Warner Bros. team for Lumia-exclusive 'Dark Knight Rises' app
Warner Bros. is promoting its forthcoming movie, The Dark Knight Rises, via a mobile app that is available exclusively on Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) Windows Phone-based Lumia smartphones.
The free Dark Knight Rises app includes a foursquare-based check-in game enabling consumers to identify as Batman or the film's villain, Bane. With each check-in at local restaurants or retailers, users earn points to help defend or destroy the location in question, depending on which character they select. A leaderboard tracks the progress of players worldwide, and check-in points may also be redeemed for rewards like Batman-themed ringtones.

The Dark Knight Rises app also features a countdown times and map-based theater finder identifying where the movie is playing locally once it premieres on July 20. Lumia users can also access film and cast information, connect to Wikipedia, Flixster and IMDB for additional insight and follow fan buzz on Twitter.
The Dark Knight Rises app represents the latest exclusive content partnership designed to differentiate the Lumia from rival smartphones. Last month, Nokia announced sports media giant ESPN will launch an exclusive Lumia version of its popular ESPN Fantasy Football app this fall; this month, the PGA Tour will introduce a Lumia golfing app featuring live tournament scoring, highlights and player information alongside interactive coverage of select events and holes. The app is exclusive to Lumia devices for 12 months from launch.
Nokia has also stated it will collaborate with social commerce platform Groupon and Angry Birds maker Rovio Mobile on products and content exclusively for Lumia phones.
Although Nokia has pinned its turnaround hopes on Windows Phone, the Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) operating system has struggled to gain market share from Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS. Research firm comScore reports that as of April 2012, Windows Phone and the legacy Windows Mobile control just 4 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, far behind Android at 50.8 percent and iOS at 31.4 percent.
