Areva grows presence in Namibia
By: STAFF REPORTER
GLOBAL nuclear giant Areva, majority shareholder in the Trekkopje mine, has increased its stake in the local uranium sector by securing 10,6 per cent of the interest in the Marenica project, believed to contain 122 million tonnes of uranium oxide.
According to a statement on Marenica’s website, the French-based multinational Areva acquired the 10,57 per cent from Polo Resources late in December.
“With the entry of Areva into its capital structure, the company enters a new chapter in its development,” Stockopedia commented on the deal.
Marenica, formerly known as West Austalian Metals, ran into financial trouble last year, but was bailed out by Batavia Mining buying 30 million shares for A$0,07 each, giving Marenica A$2,1 million of cash. In June 2009, another A$9,9 million was raised through a placement which was taken up by Polo Resources (49,56 million shares at A$0,12), Amber Petroleum, now AFNat Resources (20,65 million shares) and associates who acquired the remaining 12,39 million shares, according to Stockopedia.
In their website statement, Marenica said that Areva Resources Namibia its resource consultants, SRK Consulting (SRK) Pty Ltd, are continuing to work on the resource estimate update due at the end of January.
“All probe data and QA/QC assay data have now been compiled, and the resource update is on track to be finalised and announced in late January/early February 2010,” the company said.
Just before Christmas, Marenica released a series of positive results from the project, including an interim resource estimate upgrade of 122 million tonnes grading 140ppm uranium oxide, comprising an indicated resource of 16 million tonnes grading 170ppm uranium oxide and an inferred resource of 106 million tonnes grading
140ppm uranium oxide.
Marenica has also identified 16 new priority exploration targets following the receipt of new airborne radiometric and magnetic data for the project. Preliminary interpretation of the data has been completed within an area of 340 square kilometres, according to the statement.
“Marenica’s exploration team in Namibia will begin ground checking and sampling of the anomalies in early 2010,” Marenica said.
