IBM (IBM) reported fourth-quarter net income of $2.7 billion, or $1.48 a share, compared with $1.12 a share, or $2 billion in the year-ago period. Big Blue was expected to report earnings of $1.46 a share. Revenue was $25.6 billion compared with $24.2 billion during the year-ago quarter. For revenue, IBM was expected to pull in $25.5 billion, on average.
Looking ahead, CEO Lou Gerstner said, “IBM's broad portfolio should position us well relative to our competitors. In addition to our strong product portfolio, our very large businesses in Asia and Europe should counterbalance short-term disruptions in the U.S.” IBM shares closed up $3.94, or 4.2 percent, to $96.69. Shares were halted after Wednesday’s
closing bell rang.
