Gateway swings to $7.7 million loss

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Gateway Inc. on Thursday reported a fiscal second-quarter loss of $7.7 million, even while revenue rose, as the No. 3 U.S. personal-computer company saw a complete turnaround from its year-ago profit.
Gateway (GTW) lost 2 cents a share, compared with a profit a year ago of $17.2 million or 5 cents a share. However, sales were 5% higher to $919 million from $873 million in its 2005 second quarter.
The results fell short of the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, who forecast a profit of 2 cents a share on $1.01 billion in revenue.
Investor reaction was swift. In after-hours trading, Gateway shares fell more than 11%, to $1.41 a share, after rising 2 cents to close Thursday at $1.59. The stock has lost about 37% of its value this year.
In a statement, Rick Snyder, Gateway's interim chief executive, said he was "disappointed with our performance," even though he said he was pleased with most of the company's main business areas.
Gateway said that it sold 1.17 million PCs in the quarter, a 15% improvement over a year ago that was mainly the result of gains in the U.S. market. Retail sales rose 21% from last year to $592 million, while professional revenue fell 8% to $250 million and direct sales were off 31% at $77 million.
Gross margins fell to 5.5% from 10% a year ago. Gateway blamed the decline in gross margins on lower margins in its professional and retail businesses, as well as increases in legal expenses and additions made to reserves tied to company warranties and royalties. In keeping with long-standing policy, Gateway didn't provide a third-quarter forecast. Analysts estimate Gateway will earn 3 cents a share on $1.12 billion in revenue for the period.
