CAPE TOWN, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Buyers of cobalt should diversify
away from the Democratic Republic of Congo due to
heightened political risk in one of the world's biggest producer
of the industrial metal, a consultant said on Monday
"The DRC is seen as a high risk venture and there's a very
real drive even by China to diversify away from DRC reliance,"
Lara Smith, an analyst at Core Consultants told investors
at a mining conference. Smith said 50 percent of
global cobalt reserves were in the central African country,
but only 5 percent of fine cobalt was produced in the region.
In contrast, China produces nearly 40 percent of fine
cobalt.
In a bid to encourage beneficiation -- crushing and separating
ore into valuable substances -- the DRC government
last year introduced a 60 percent tax on unbeneficiated ore
and suspended the issuing of new mineral concessions, she
said. Smith expects the price of cobalt -- used in the cellular
phone batteries -- to average $18-20 per pound over the
next 12 months helped by demand for new wireless phones
in emerging markets, cellular phone batteries sector and
hybrid cars.
Commenting on other minor metals, Smith said the price of
lithium, used in the production of glass and ceramics is
expected to average $4,400-4,600 per tonne over the next
five years before rising to $5,500 per tonne.
She said no major increase in ferrochrome supply was expected
before 2015 due to power constraints in South Africa,
the top producer of the steel-making ingredient.

Thanks for the email.  We can certainly appreciate your frustration with the share price – we are all shareholders here.  There is a complete disconnect between what the markets are valuing companies at and reality right now – and we are not alone.  There is no material reason for the decline in share price – construction is continuing on track and we are moving forward with the financing and, as of today at any rate, we are still on track for start-up of production later in Q2-2012.  I believe the rally in the markets today in response to the EU summit meeting held to resolve the EU sovereign debt Wednesday was short lived – see the headlines attached.

Regarding the “Deadline to arrange additional support” please understand that this is not a make or break deadline.  One, we may be able to extend it if necessary (and of this I am not sure…), but if it cannot be extended, then the bonds are simply removed from the equation and we continue discussions with the banks for a straight debt financing.  The banks don’t distinguish between a Letter of Credit to support bonds, or writing us a cheque in a debt financing – the due diligence process is identical.  If we cannot take advantage of the bonds (which is preferable, as it would mean we could get rid of the banks quicker), the we will do what 90% of all mining company’s do – raise money through equity (done) and debt, typically with a bank.

The current decline is the share price has everything to do with the current world financial crisis and redemption calls on funds.  In my opinion, the selling it is the result of a fund that that is in trouble that has numerous redemption calls and must come up with cash to put money in their clients’ accounts who have sold their mutual fund – most likely those that are heavily weighted in resource stocks that have taken more than a 50% decline over the last couple of months.  The selling is typically done through House 1 (Anonymous) as the sellers do not want to be identified.  If numerous clients all sell (redeem) at the same time, the funds have no choice but to liquidate to come up with cash to put in their accounts and in doing so, drive the value of the stocks down further.  It is also month end and we are entering tax loss selling season.

House 1 has been relentlessly selling over the last couple of months.   In September, one house alone was responsible for over 90% of the selling from Anonymous, and anonymous was the largest seller that month.  We have $55 Million in the bank (as at Aug31, 2011) and the market valuation of our stock is currently $38 Million !  They are discounting our cash by 30% – and giving zero value for the cobalt project.  That is NOT a reaction to “uncertainty in financing” – for a cashed up company with no debt.

There is little “promotion” that will stem this sort of selling – and without a solid foundation and a logical approach, it would be short lived.  Many would look at this market as an opportunity, while other panic and bail out.  I know exactly where at least three hundred thousand shares of buying over the last three days came from, and as you can see, this didn’t move the stock at all.

We have $55 million in cash in the bank and a project with an NPV (discounted 8%) worth some $88 million in the bare bones base case scenario.  That’s $143 million and the market is valuing us at $38 million – 30% less than cash in the bank.  The recent news release was to demonstrate how we are moving forward despite the markets around us – and that we have enough money in the bank to weather any financial storm.

The Boards of Directors of the Bonds' issuers, The Industrial Development Corporation of Lemhi County, and The Industrial Development Corporation of Shoshone County, Idaho, both met in special sessions late last week to approve the Amended and Restated Indentures of Trust which authorized this modified bond structure.

"This is not bank debt - this is bond debt" stated Mari-Ann Green, C.E.O. of Formation Metals Inc. She continued, "Therefore, including the interest on the letter of credit, the debt carries a floating interest rate which is currently less than 60 basis points. The bonds mature in 28 years and there is no obligation to repay the principal until maturity. In addition, they can be redeemed by the Company at par at any time.

Die Bewertung von Formation Metals ist gegenwärtig nicht wirklich nachvollziehbar, nahe zu eher ein Absurdum. Sehr großes Misstrauen spielt der Markt gerade, das ist insbesondere auf die Finanzierungsschwierigkeiten zurückzuführen, die letztes Jahr begannen. Seither hat sich bei Formations aber viel bewegt und sie sitzen auf soliden Cash Reserven und Bonds.

Die aktuelle Marktkapitalisierung beträgt rund 52 Millionen kanadische Dollar. Alleine der Kassenbestand von Formation beträgt gerade ca. 64 Millionen Dollar. Damit liegt der Börsenwert sogar 12 Mio Dollar unter dem Kassenbestand. Jetzt kommt aber erst der wirkliche Wert: Der NAV (Net Asset Value) von Formation beträgt gegenwärtig sogar mehr wie 1,50 kanadische Dollar pro share.. rechnet man den NAV und die Cash Reserven zusammen (ohne Bonds) kommt man auf einen reinen Asset Wert von mehr als 2,00 kanadische Dollar pro share.. wohin will der Wert noch fallen???

Niveau kann man eigentlich nicht sehr viel falsch machen.

Bei genug Cash in der Tasche und guten Aussichten ist hier ein verdoppler und bis 2013 ein verddreifacher drin. Das ist natürlich konservativ geschätzt. Die Zahlen wurden hier ja schon genüge diskutiert.

Da stimme ich dir voll und ganz zu. Ja, die Aufmerksamkeit und der Kursverlauf ist wirklich rätselhaft. Denke hier positionieren sich gerade viele an der Seitenlinie und warten den Stichtag der Finanzirung am 15. März ab. 

Die Konstruktion läuft gegenwärtig auf Hochtouren und sie kommen planmäßig voran, siehe dazu die  letzten offiziellen news und die construction gallery. Sie planen im 4. Quartal 2012 die Produktion aufzunehmen. Denkst du, es gibt Verzögerungen bis ins 1. Quartal 2013?

Ich habe mir Formation nochmal angeschaut.

Ich denke, es gibt auf jedenfall Verzögerungen, die werden wohl bis 2013 / Q2 reichen. Wir bekommen nie alles gesagt, was denn tat. vonstatten geht.

Formation zieht zum Wochenschluss unter hohem Volumen stark an. Nächste Woche (15.03) soll der Finanzierungsabschluss mit Union bekannt gegeben werden. Sieht so aus, als ob da schon etwas durchgesickert ist. Sollte die Finanzierung über den 80-Millionen Dollar Kredit stehen, erreichen sie einen weiteren Meilenstein, auf dem Weg zur Produktion. So wird die Rally erst starten, denn Formation ist immer noch unter Cash bewertet. In jedem Fall riecht es nach Front Running..

Formation Metals: Die Konstruktion der Mine schreitet voran

Der fortgeschrittene Kobalt-Junior Formation Metals hat jetzt ein Update zum Stand der Konstruktion bei seinem Idaho-Kobalt-Projekt gegeben. Dabei hat es sowohl bei der Mine als auch bei der Verarbeitungsanlage deutliche Fortschritte gegeben.

Bei Umsetzung der noch ausstehenden Finanzierung kann Formation Metals bei diesem Projekt innerhalb von 12 Monaten mit der Produktion starten. Das macht dieses Unternehmen einzigartig in Nordamerika: Formation Metals wird so der einzige primäre Kobaltproduzent Nordamerikas sein.

Seit Anfang des Jahres ist es Formation Metals beim Minenprojekt gelungen, die technischen Planungen für die Mine und den ersten Konzentrator zu 95% fertigzustellen. Damit sind bei diesem Projekt die Voraussetzungen geschaffen, es in sehr kurzer Zeit nach Erreichen der finanziellen Mittel auch tatsächlich in die Produktion zu bringen.

Bei der Kobalt Produktionsanlage hat es auch neue Erkenntnisse gegeben: So ist durch weitere Studien klar geworden, dass durch die Installation eines weiteren Druckbehälters anstelle der Erweiterung der bestehenden Druckbehälter die Kobaltproduktion effizienter gestaltet werden kann.

Realistischer Plan: In 12 Monaten will Formation Metals produzieren Auf diese Art und Weise bleiben dann neben der Kobaltproduktion auch noch mehr Kapazitäten für die Verarbeitung von verschiedenen Edelmetallen und Industriemetallen übrig.

An dieser Meldung wird eines klar: Formation Metals ist gut positioniert, die eigenen Vorgaben einzuhalten und die Produktion innerhalb von 12 Monaten zu starten. Der fehlende Baustein ist jetzt noch die letzte Finanzierung des Projekts.

Doch auch hier ist Formation Metals auf einem guten Weg. Und dann ist auch klar: Wenn die Finanzierung über die Bühne geht, ist die größte Belastung für die Aktie aus dem Weg geräumt. Dann wird sich die Börse sehr schnell wieder auf die fundamentale Bewertung der Aktie konzentrieren. Und die ist aktuell sehr niedrig mit einer Marktkapitalisierung von nur noch 45 Mio. Dollar.

The high-purity cobalt that Formation will produce is also used increasingly in other markets that require magnets, such as electric car motors or wind turbines. The jet engine blades are very important, as there have been a very large number of orders for Boeing’s 777 and 787 (we’re seeing the spin-off effects here at local Phoenix Honeywell plants).

High-pure cobalt has recently seen a dip in price, as indicated at http://www.platts.com/RSSFeedDetailedNews/RSSFeed/Metals/8999762 due to surplus metal coming onto the market. 99.8% HPC prices have fluctuated widely in the last 10 years, from a low of around $7/lb in 2001 to $52/lb in Feb 2008. Prices crashed to $10/lb in Dec 2008, the same year as it’s all-time high, going down with the rest of the world’s equity and commodity prices. The last 4 years, we have an inverted cup, between $10 and $20/lb. Finally, today’s Apr 3, 2012 price was about $14.75/lb.

Formation’s base case was to sell HPC at $22.30/lb, with a cost to produce at $7.73/lb, or about $14.50 net profit per pound, earning a (discounted at 7.5%) net cash flow of $34 million/year for 10 years, or $340 million of net value. With 90 million shares outstanding, that’s $3.78 per share earnings. Share price today, .51/share.

But 99.8% HPC is selling today for less than that base case. If the mine were in operation today, using today’s 99.8% HPC price, the net would be about $7.02 per pound, or about half the projected base case, earning $17 million/year for 10 years, or $170 million net value. With 90 million shares outstanding, that’s $1.89 per share earnings. Share price today, .51/share.

However, the mine has substantial inferred cobalt, which would extend the mine’s life at least 5 years (and really, probably a lot more — 20 year mine life is not unreasonable here). None of the above talks about the copper mined at the same time, and which is in the same abundance of the target cobalt, around 30 million pounds. It also doesn’t include modest but notable gold, nor the revenues from the existing smelting/metallurgy done for other miners. Finally, the average price of cobalt varies widely, but the demand for products that use cobalt, like silver, is trending upwards. It seems that over 10 years, there is a reasonable possibility that the average price of 99.8% HPC should be more than today’s price of $14.75/lb, and Formation’s $22.30/lb. I also personally question their discount rate of 7.5% may be too steep, but that’s subjective.

Bottom line: expected share price range from $1.89 – $3.78 /share for cobalt alone, and easily double that with other substantial income and mine-able reserves included. $7/share is a very reasonable target for some time in the next 5 years. Company starts mining the cobalt later this year.

Nickel price decline halves Sherritt’s Q1 earnings

Toronto-based Sherritt International had a rough quarter, revealing on Wednesday a 50% drop in earnings from $63 million to $32 million when measured against the same quarter of 2011.

The diversified miner, whose operations are centred around coal, nickel and oil, said the poor numbers largely reflected a drop in nickel prices.

Sherritt’s revenues tanked from $474 million in the first three months of last year to $462 million this quarter. The company received a 35% lower price for nickel this quarter, $8.66/lb, compared to $11.73 in Q1 2011, which more than offset a 1% rise in sales volumes.

“Continued pressure on input commodity costs, combined with lower realized nickel and cobalt prices, adversely affected the margin in metals, which was partially offset by stronger results from oil and gas,” said Sherritt President and CEO David Pathe..

Total global refined cobalt production up 4% in 2011: CDI

London (Platts)--26Apr2012/747 am EDT/1147 GMT

Total global refined cobalt supply in 2011 rose around 4% to 82,247 mt from 79,262 mt in 2010, the Cobalt Development Institute said this week.

Global apparent consumption appears to be around 75,000 mt for 2011, an increase of around 15% on the previous year, CDI said in the April edition of its Cobalt News publication.

The report, based on main sources reporting their production, said there was a modest increase in demand in the Americas and Europe and that Asia (including China) saw an increase of about 18% compared to 2010.

Cobalt production from CDI members increased 15% last year to 35,483 mt from 30,872 mt in 2010.

 Production from CDI members saw the addition of Indian producer Rubamin in 2011, while Russian producer Norilsk Nickel now reports as a non-member, the CDI said..

Die news bzgl. der Verarbeitung von Gold- & Silber in der Precious Metalls Raffinerie - einen Teil von Formation's  'Big Creek Hydrometallurgical Complex' - wird sich mittelfr. positiv auf den Cash Flow des Unternehmens auswirken. Die harten news hinsichtlich der relevanten Verarbeitungsaufnahme ist aber etw. dünn, da nur wenig Details hinsichtlich des Starts der operativen Verarbeitungstätigkeiten gegeben werden. Nach den news wurde letzte Woche das erste Material von der Crescent Mine (ca ~ 5km von der Raffinerie entfernt) angeliefert, welches jetzt verarbeitet werden soll. Demnach werden wir auch dbzgl. detaillierte Fakten erst die nächsten Wochen/Monate sehen. 

De facto profitiert Formation bis dato erstmal von einer Aufnahme in ein offizielles Register (der COMEX) für qualitative PM-Verarbeiter, und erweitert damit nicht nur den Rahmen der potentiellen Interessenten, sondern verschafft sich dadurch auch eine Art Gütesiegel, das in Zukunft immer wichtiger werden wird.

Formation Begins Processing Silver & Gold Concentrates

SUNSHINE Silver Now Good Delivery on COMEX

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - May 2, 2012) -  Formation Metals Inc. ("Formation" or the "Company") (TSX:FCO) announces today that it has received notice that it has been placed on the Approved Refiners and Brands official list of the Commodity Exchange Inc. (COMEX). Effective April 30, 2012 the "SUNSHINE" silver brand will be deliverable against the Exchange's Silver futures contract.

Quality silver has been consistently produced for at least five years at the Company's Sunshine Precious Metals Refinery which is one of the criteria for the listing. The Refinery is part of the Company's Big Creek hydrometallurgical complex, located in the Coeur d'Alene mining district in the Silver Valley area of northern Idaho. COMEX is a division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, a commodity futures exchange.

"The COMEX listing will attract a wider range of customers," stated Mari-Ann Green, CEO of Formation Metals Inc. "In anticipation of the listing, we have also been preparing the hydromet plant to accept silver/copper and gold concentrates. The Sunshine Silver Refinery refines silver and gold doré, high grade silver residues and other high content silver materials into high quality silver and gold bullion for customers. This provides the Company with a steady positive operating margin. Over the past few years however, there have been significant changes to refining and concentrate processing capabilities around the world. Formation therefore, has received numerous requests from local mines and mines across North and South America to process their concentrate. Interestingly, the Big Creek hydrometallurgical plant type of concentrate processing is not presently available in the United States, and for certain types of concentrates not available in the western hemisphere. In addition, the hydrometallurgical plant can operate as a low emission, zero liquid discharge facility and can process materials that traditional smelters find difficult or impossible to process under modern strict environmental standards.

After review of the material specifications and analysis of the hydrometallurgical plant's capability, the Company's technical staff and market consultants concluded that the operating margin at the complex could be greatly improved by processing copper/silver and gold concentrates in addition to refining doré and other materials. It was also determined that this could be accomplished with minimal capital costs.

Kobalt wird in vielfältigen High-Tech-Geräten gebraucht. Handys, Laptops, Elektroautos und Flugzeugturbinen, um nur einige zu nennen. In 2011 betrug das weltweite Angebot an raffiniertem Kobalt 82.247 Tonnen, damit lag es rund 4 Prozent über der Vorjahresproduktion von 79.262 Tonnen. Formation Metals Begins Community Initiative with Idaho Conservation League

Measured ca   28 mio lbs
p+p         ca. 27mio lbs   (tot.   ca  55mio lbs)

heutiger Cobalt Preis  ca 13$/lbs  abzügl  cost lt. Angabe  7,70 /lbs
verbleiben Netto  ca.  5,30 /lbs  x  55mio = ca  290mio NETTO

plus  Cu.  ca.  200mio +  Au ca.  100mio  (abzügl  ca 30% cost hierfür )  

=  290 + 210  =  ca  500 mio$  Netto .  ( alles grob überschlägig)

Die Zahlen mit  ca 80 mio Npv waren von  2010 (glaub ich)

Richtige Aufstellung, denke aber dass man einige Zahlen aus den früheren Berechnungen mit etw. Vorsicht betrachten sollte. Es hat sich in vielen Bereichen Einiges geändert, so sind z.B. die Kosten für die Minenarbeiter während der letzten Jahre gestiegen. Weiter sind die überschlagenen Zahlen idF eher für die prognostizierte Berechnung des Cash Flows hilfreich. Teile der Erlöse fließen ja als benötigte Invesitionen sofort wieder in das Projekt, zudem kommen Abgaben in Form von Steuern etc. ... 

 

Bin auf die nächsten Updates auch bzgl. der Projekte mit der Idaho Conservation League gespannt. Die intensive Kooperation mit den lokalen Bevölkerungsgruppen, dieser einflussreichen Institution und die Wertlegung auf nachhaltiges Mining inkl. der Anwendung von hohen Umweltstandards, wird sich langfristig auszahlen.

Eine kleine Zusammenfassung über einige relevante Konstruktionsaktivitäten:

• Die Konstruktion (Phase II) auf der Mine Site fokussiert sich gerade auf eine neue Eingangsstraße, die größere Transportein Zukunft erleichtern soll. Die neue Transportroute soll den Eingang zur Mine mit der Verarbeitungsmühle verbinden und die Transportdauer der geförderten Erze signifikant verkürzen. So wird Formation nicht nur Zeit, sondern auch bares Geld in Zukunft sparen können. Daher ist der Bau der neuen Transportstrecke sehr wichtig.

Reuters Africa reported that Zambia’s cobalt output dropped from 4,371 tonnes in 2012 to 3,036 tonnes in the first half of 2012.

"Cobalt production dropped to 3,036 tonnes in the six month period this year from 4,371 tonnes in 2011 and exports fell to 3,534 tonnes from 4,410 tonnes."

Der Aktienkurs befindet sich weiter in einer Bodenbildungsphase. Seit Wochen gibt es kaum Impulse am kanadischen Börsenplatz, das Volumen ist zuletzt auf ein Jahrestief gefallen. Bei all den günstigen Bewertungen, z.B. wird Formation gegenwärtig unter dem Wert des Kassenbestands bewertet, muss man wohl weiter auf neue Entwicklungen und Fortschritte warten. Aufgrund der schwächelnden Weltwirtschaft inkl. der "Abkühlung" in China und den schlechter werdenen Aussichten, blieben auch die Preise für das Industriemetall Kobalt in den letzten Monaten unter Druck. Die niedrigen Kobaltpreise wirken sich natürlich alles andere als positiv auf die Finanzierungschancen von Formation Metals aus. Jedoch werden die Ressourcen im Boden langfristig sicher nicht weniger wert, und das Deposit gehört zu den wichtigsten Lagerstätten in Amerika..

Vllt. gelingt es Formation in den nächsten 12 Monaten einige größere Deals (Verarbeitungsverträge) an Land zu ziehen. Ein (zusätzlicher) relevanter Cashflow könnte wichtig werden..

Formation Metals made good use of the summer as it finished earthworks and made headway on the construction of infrastructure at its Idaho cobalt project. The project is expected to become the Western Hemisphere’s only source of high purity cobalt (HPC), a product which is essential making superalloys required by the turbine industry.

Construction work at Idaho

Formation has now all but completed phase II of the construction plan and, with the installation of a liner at the tailings facility and completion of construction of the portal bench, will have the entire necessary infrastructure in place to begin underground development.

The last remaining hurdle before getting underground is the much anticipated final project financing which, after potential lenders undertook extensive due diligence over the summer, now appears to be coming together..

Formation's Q3-Konstruktionsfortschritte im Einzelnen:

• Construction of a new haul road resulted in eliminating the need to use the portion of Bucktail Road on the neighbouring Noranda property and shortening the haul distance from the portal bench by approximately two miles. This is expected to result in additional savings in mining costs per ton.
• Concurrent with the above roadwork, the installation of several extensive guardrails and berms on roads and gates to restricted areas were completed. These measures were implemented to reduce road maintenance and enhance the safety of the mine workers.
• Placement of new surfacing material on all new and existing roads is currently underway and is approximately 50% complete. In addition, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service and Lemhi County, maintenance of the transportation route to the project site was conducted. This included blading, watering and rolling of approximately 10 miles of surface on Williams Creek Road for safety and road surface protection purposes.
• Drilling of water capture and monitoring wells was also initiated. This included the installation of two monitoring wells which is nearing completion. The drilling and installation of water capture wells along Bucktail Creek is also underway with three out of seven wells completed. Once concluded, the installation of all monitoring wells required on the mine site and capture wells offsite will be complete.
• Engineering focused on completing piping and instrument design which was completed and is currently under engineering review for final design. Work was also conducted with safety consultants to conduct Process Hazard Analysis of the Cobalt Production Facility, one of OSHA's requirements to ensure plant safety, based on having a completed set of designs for the piping and instrumentation.
• Design of the Leach Residue Repository facility progressed, with the water management area being surveyed, and information on geo-tube layout design was received from one of the Company's engineering consultants. Geo-tube requests for proposals were released in August to determine the recommended vendor. Hydrology engineers will then work with the chosen vendor on final geo-tube layout design.
