Analysts say the retailer of arts-and-crafts supplies has a lot going for it because of growing consumer interest in various crafts, the demographics of its customers, and the way it runs its stores. "A.C. Moore is demonstrating powerful sales growth," said Bernard Sosnick, an analyst with Fahnestock & Co. Inc., in an April 4 report to investors. Fahnestock is a New York investment firm that comanaged a secondary public stock offering for the company in March. That offering raised $52 million for A.C. Moore "The company is in the early stage of what we believe will be a long period of high growth rates in [earnings per share] as it expands to become a national chain," Sosnick said. Analysts say sales for A.C. Moore, based in Blackwood, N.J., increased in fall and winter, in part because Americans turned to hobbies and away from travel in weeks following the Sept. 11 attacks. But consumer interest in the thousands of craft items that A.C. Moore sells -- especially among baby boomers -- started well before that, the retail specialists said. The company earned $875,000, or 10 cents a share, on revenue of $85.9 million in the first quarter, compared with a loss of $62,000, or a penny a share, on $66.4 million in revenue in the 2001 first quarter.
As for new stores, the company plans to grow by about 20 percent a year for at least the next two or three years
