in diesem sinne

Why A123 Systems Still Not Worth It

By Rick Pearson

About this article:
This column is being previewed exclusively for RealMoney readers. A123 Systems shares reached $28.20 today, implying a market cap of approximately $2 billion. This is more than double its IPO price, and triple the low end of the initial IPO offering range. Investors are clearly placing a lot of hope in A123's technology, but are also ignoring the company's fundamentals and playing the stock for its momentum. At the other end of the spectrum, other lithium-ion battery plays such as China Digital Communications are also trading out of line with their fundamentals, but are undervalued rather than overvalued. In my last article on A123, I questioned its valuation when it was trading around $18 per share; I received massive amounts of feedback suggesting I didn't understand the potential for A123's lithium iron phosphate technology. I responded to many of these emails with a simple question: "What revenue and margin forecasts...

What do you think is the most important quality in a job

SAN FRANCISCO (Fortune) -- If you believe that the battery in your car will soon be bigger than the engine -- or replace it entirely -- you should keep an eye on A123 Systems.

The Watertown, Mass.-based company, which develops advanced lithium ion batteries for things like power tools and cars, went public toward the end of September after pulling an earlier IPO bid to wait for a better investing climate.

It found it, and shares in the company spiked 50% above the offer price on the first day of trading. The stock has been on a rollercoaster ride since. When the market slid the week of October 10th, shares of A123 (AONE) plummeted 17%. Overall, the stock is up about 8% since its public market debut on September 23rd.

Clearly, caution is warranted with this stock, as it is with all new issues. A123 is not a profitable company; it reported a loss of $89 million on revenue of $90 million in the year ending June 30.

And if it didn't land $249 million in federal stimulus funds to build a factory outside of Detroit to make its batteries, A123 would have been in an extremely tough spot and probably not much of an IPO candidate: Once a leading contender to be the initial supplier for the batteries in General Motor's forthcoming plug-in hybrid, the Chevy Volt, it lost out to a subsidiary of Korea's LG.

There's your warning. But consider that A123 is also one of the few U.S.-based companies competing in an industry that practically every automaker on the planet predicts will be huge.

Though it isn't cranking batteries out for carmakers yet, A123 does have relationships with a handful, most notably Chrysler (now owned by Fiat) Daimler and BMW. General Motors has left open the possibility of working with A123 in the future. In the meantime, Black & Decker and DeWALT are putting millions of A123 lithium-ion cells into power tools.
0:00 /3:26Low tech supply? Good sign

The electrification of transportation is coming in various forms, and batteries play a role in all of them. You have gasoline hybrids like Toyota's Prius. Plug-in hybrids like the Volt, and all battery-electric cars coming soon from the likes of Nissan and Renault.

Even hydrogen-fuel-cell cars require a sophisticated battery system, especially if they are to become a next-generation hybrid, running a fuel cell coupled with a battery, rather than a gasoline engine/battery combo.

The question that remains for A123 as an investment is how long will it take for all this technology to hit the mass-market road?

Consider the lesson of Ballard Power. Ballard (BLDP), which makes fuel cells, was once a high-flyer, but its shares are now worth about one-third less than when it went public in 1995 because fuel cells for cars failed to take off as quickly as was thought. They are finally getting there, though Ballard has exited the car business.

A123 faces a similar set of players, technological hurdles and issues of timing. If mass-market cars go electric soon, A123 could get a huge jolt. If not, you can expect a long, painful slog. To top of page

Today's report by BusinessWeek likens the technological relationship between batteries and electric cars to that of microchips and personal computers. The report noted that optimistic estimates suggest electric cars could account for a fifth of the auto market in the next decade - suggesting that the current front-runners might not be the ultimate winners. Just as Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ - News) was not the first to build a PC, and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL - News) wasn't the first to make an MP3 player, future giants in the electric car market might not be the first horses out of the gate. However, that hasn't stopped investors from placing their bets on the future Intel (NASDAQ: INTC - News) of electric car components.

A handful of battery stocks are flying today, continuing a trend that has sent select players up by double-digits over the last month, while others head south by similar margins. As the hype surrounding mainstream electric transportation grows, a potentially bright future for battery companies may become increasingly apparent.

As a whole, the Energy Storage and Battery Technology Stocks Index is ahead by 2.5% today. It is now outperforming the S&P 500 by 9% over the last month.

Leading today's rally is Chinese electric car and battery company BYD (OTC: BYDDF - News). The stock has gotten a lot of attention since news of Warren Buffett's investment in the firm was made public, and shares have doubled in just the last three months. The company's nine-month car sales shot up by 50% compared to last year's figure, according to Friday's report in the China Securities Journal, which was covered by Reuters on Thursday evening in the U.S.

Meanwhile, other Chinese battery stocks are following BYD higher today. China Ritar Power (NASDAQ: CRTP - News) and China BAK Battery (NASDAQ: CBAK - News) are both up by 4%.

The sector's newest component, A123 Systems (NASDAQ: AONE - News) is adding 3% to its 75% rally since going public less than a month ago. It is already one of the top performing 2009 IPOs.

As stated in BusinessWeek, "the great battery race will make sure that there will be several large companies that specialize in the design and manufacture of batteries for cars." So as Toyota (NYSE: TM - News), Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM - News), Ford (NYSE: F - News) and the like battle for their share of the electric car market, investors should keep a close eye on moves within the Energy Storage and Battery Technology Stocks Index.

The performance bodes very well for makers of lithium ion batteries such as China Bak Battery(CBAK Quote), Advanced Battery Technologies (ABAT Quote), Hong Kong Highpower Technology(HPJ Quote) and China Digital Communication (CMTP.OB Quote), none of which have yet released quarterly results.

All of these stocks are public and liquid, but they trade on very different multiples, so investors should select carefully. China Bak is one to avoid for now, while China Digital could be the next home run. Advanced Battery and Hong Kong Highpower look fairly valued, but could benefit further if there are any positive earnings surprises.

Inside every iPod, iPhone and Apple laptop is a lithium ion battery. The lithium ion battery has become smaller, more energy efficient and longer lasting, effectively replacing the previous generation of nickel metal hydride batteries. The four companies are all competitors in this market and are currently enjoying high margins as demand for products such as those made by Apple continues to soar. Apple's strong results provide a great barometer for what to expect from upcoming earnings reports by these battery makers, all of which should enjoy a strong pick-up in revenue.

Following the initial public offering of A123 Systems (AONE Quote), China Bak's stock price is up more than 50% as enthusiasm has grown for next-generation battery makers. But like A123, CBAK is a money-losing company. I would expect to see significant revenue growth from CBAK this quarter, but unless it can effectively double sales from the previous quarter, it is unlikely to break even in the coming quarter.

IHI to sell A123's low-cost batteries in Japan in 2010

* Batteries will be used for electric, hybrid cars, ships

* IHI shares fall 1.1 pct vs 1.4 pct drop in the Nikkei (Adds details after announcement)

TOKYO, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Japan's IHI Corp (7013.T) said on Wednesday it would start selling low-cost lithium ion batteries developed by U.S. company A123 Systems Inc (AONE.O) in Japan in 2010, as it looks to tap surging demand from electric vehicle producers and other manufacturers.

Government subsidies have boosted appetite for environmentally friendly cars in the country since they were launched in June.

IHI, a heavy machinery maker, said the batteries made by A123 are more cost competitive than rivals' because they do not use rare earth as a raw material.

The company plans to sell the batteries to carmakers, include them in its power supply systems and use them in ships, an IHI spokesman said.

A123 develops batteries for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids and works with carmakers such as BMW (BMWG.DE), Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors [GM.UL].

Its shares jumped 50 percent on the day it debuted on the Nasdaq stock market last month.

Lithium-ion batteries are a hot area of investment for many Japanese companies.

Sanyo (6764.T), the world's largest maker of rechargeable batteries and set to be taken over by Panasonic (6752.T), is developing lithium-ion batteries for cars with Volkswagen AG.

Toshiba Corp (6502.T) said on Tuesday that it would invest 25 billion yen ($273.7 million) to build a new lithium-ion battery plant in Japan. [ID: nT322473]

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (7011.T) also plans to spend 10 billion yen to build a test plant for the production of lithium-ion batteries. [ID:nTKB006387].

Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) expects to start selling electric vehicles in Japan and the United States in 2010 and to start fully-fledged sales globally by the 2012 financial year.

IHI's shares closed down 1.1 percent at 179 yen, outperforming a 1.4 percent decline in the benchmark Nikkei average .N225. (Reporting by Yuko Inoue, Nobuhiro Kubo, Mariko Katsumura; Editing by Joseph Radford)

There were a number of milestone events for A123 Systems during the third quarter, including the successful completion of the company's initial public offering, which raised $391 million in net proceeds. A123 Systems was also selected for a $249 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy, which was one of the largest grants awarded by the DOE to manufacturers of advanced batteries and battery systems. Finally, the company continues to make progress related to the loan it is pursuing for up to $233 million with the DOE.

David Vieau, CEO of A123 Systems, said, "We believe our IPO proceeds and significant support from the DOE provides A123 Systems with the capital necessary to expand our capacity rapidly to meet the aggressive growth plans of our customers and prospects. During the third quarter, we also aligned our organization around our key target markets, recruited additional senior executives with significant experience in the automotive market and increased our resources dedicated to the electric grid services market. We are putting in place the infrastructure and expertise that we believe will enable A123 Systems to scale to much larger levels."

Vieau said, "During the third quarter, we signed a supply agreement for certain programs with BMW, received notice of a design win for a new application with an existing heavy duty customer and won several development projects in the automotive sector. We are also pleased that AES commissioned A123 Hybrid Ancillary Power Units in Chile during the third quarter, in addition to placing additional orders for deployment in North America. We are highly focused on establishing a strong market position in the electric grid services market, as we have in the automotive sector." Vieau added, "We were pleased to hear Chrysler's announcement on November 4, 2009, in which they reaffirmed their commitment to electric vehicles and combined both Fiat's European and Chrysler's U.S. programs in this area under the leadership of Chrysler's electric vehicle management. The high level of interest and design activity across our portfolio of customers and prospects, and in each of our target markets, is encouraging for A123's long-term growth."

Financial Highlights

Revenue: A123 Systems reported third quarter total revenue of $23.6 million, an increase compared to $22.9 million for the third quarter of 2008. Within revenue, product revenue of $20.0 million increased 42% compared to the third quarter of 2008, and research and development services revenue of $3.6 million decreased 59% over the same time period.

For the nine months ended September 30, 2009, A123 Systems reported total revenue of $66.5 million, an increase of 48% compared to the same period in 2008. Product revenue of $56.6 million increased 76% and research and development services revenue of $9.9 million decreased 23% for the nine months ended September 30, 2009, compared to the same period of 2008.

Gross Profit/(Loss): Gross profit was ($1.9) million in the third quarter, compared to $1.0 million in the third quarter of 2008. For the nine months ended September 30, 2009, gross profit was ($2.6) million, compared to ($3.7) million in the same period of 2008.

Net Income/(Loss): Net loss was ($22.8) million, or ($1.78) per share, based on 12.8 million weighted average common shares outstanding in the third quarter. The company ended the third quarter with approximately 102 million shares outstanding, with the increase from prior periods resulting from conversion of preferred stock at the time of the IPO, combined with new shares issued as part of the IPO process. Net loss was ($19.0) million, or ($2.06) per share, based on 9.2 million weighted average common shares outstanding in the third quarter of 2008.

Adjusted EBITDA: Adjusted EBITDA is a non-GAAP financial measure that is calculated by taking GAAP operating income (loss), adding depreciation and amortization and stock-based compensation. For the third quarter of 2009, adjusted EBITDA was ($16.3) million, compared to ($15.2) million in the third quarter of 2008.

A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP results has been provided in the financial statement tables included at the end of this press release. An explanation of these measures is also included below under the heading "Non-GAAP Financial Measures."

Cash: A123 Systems had cash and cash equivalents of $494 million at September 30, 2009, an increase from $115 million at the end of the prior quarter. The increase in cash was a result of net proceeds of approximately $391 million related to the completion of the company's initial public offering.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures

This press release contains a non-GAAP financial measure under the rules of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for adjusted EBITDA. This non-GAAP information supplements and is not intended to represent a measure of performance in accordance with disclosures required by generally accepted accounting principles. Non-GAAP financial measures are used internally to manage the business, such as in establishing an annual operating budget. Non-GAAP financial measures are used by A123 Systems management in its operating and financial decision-making because management believes these measures reflect ongoing business in a manner that allows meaningful period-to-period comparisons. Accordingly, A123 Systems believes it is useful for investors and others to review both GAAP and non-GAAP measures in order to (a) understand and evaluate current operating performance and future prospects in the same manner as management does and (b) compare in a consistent manner the company's current financial results with past financial results. The primary limitations associated with the use of non-GAAP financial measures are that these measures may not be directly comparable to the amounts reported by other companies and they do not include all items of income and expense that affect operations. A123 Systems management compensates for these limitations by considering the company's financial results and outlook as determined in accordance with GAAP and by providing a detailed reconciliation of the non-GAAP financial measures to the most directly comparable GAAP measures in the tables attached to this press release.

offensichtlich erwartet.

The company lost $22.9 million, or $1.78 per share, in the three months ended Sept. 30 compared with a loss of $18.9 million a year ago.

Revenue rose to $23.6 million from $22.9 million a year ago.

Deutsche Bank analyst Dan Galves said A123's most important achievements include deals that will drive revenue growth.

Galves said the company signed a production contract with BMW, which he said validates its ability to win mainstream contracts, and is pursuing 7 light-duty vehicle programs, some of which will make sourcing decisions in the next several months.

That will be key for the company as it must reign in new revenue sources to bolster margins, the analyst said.

"Risks are centered around the revenue trajectory," Galves said. "Loss of expected programs would present downside and significant new business wins would present upside."

momentan hält sich der kurs um die 17-18$.

Clean technology has been one of the hottest sectors in 2009, and as such it is prone to some pretty heavy speculation. Case in point A123 Systems (NASDAQ: AONE - News), the Watertown, Massachusetts-based lithium ion battery maker whose third-quarter losses widened after its well-publicized, late-September initial public offering. The stock slipped on yesterday's earnings report, but the 3% uptick in total revenue and a new contract with BMW gave investors a reason to stay optimistic.

VentureBeat credits the A123's PR team for putting a positive spin on the mixed results, and noted that the company's success largely depends on growth in the electric car market, which could be years down the road. However, many major automakers have an electric offering in the works, so the battery sector's recent pullback could be a buying opportunity to get in on a technology that could eventually be a mainstay of the auto industry.

WATERTOWN, Mass. and SHANGHAI, China, Dec. 17, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A123 Systems (Nasdaq:AONE - News), a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphate(TM) lithium ion batteries and systems, today announced that they are entering into a joint venture with SAIC Motor Co. Ltd, a leading automaker in China. The focus of the joint venture is to develop, manufacture and sell complete vehicle traction battery systems for use in hybrid electric and pure electric passenger vehicles and heavy duty truck and bus applications in the People's Republic of China, the largest and fastest growing automotive market in the world.

"We are excited to be partnering with an industry leader such as SAIC Motor to pursue the expanding Chinese market for advanced lithium ion battery technology," said David Vieau, chief executive officer of A123 Systems. "As part of this partnership we look forward to building a team of outstanding employees to develop innovative battery technologies that we expect will be included in some of the highest quality hybrid and electric vehicles anywhere in the world."

The new venture, called Shanghai Advanced Traction Battery Systems Co. (ATBS), will seek to develop business throughout the entire Chinese transportation market and position A123 to strategically gain market share. ATBS will also be the preferential supplier of complete energy storage systems for all hybrid electric and pure electric vehicles manufactured by SAIC Motor and its wholly-owned subsidiaries. A123 Systems will supply the advanced automotive battery cells and work with SAIC Motor to design and develop the integrated battery systems for ATBS.

The venture's ownership will be held 51 percent by SAIC Motor and 49 percent by A123 Systems, with the management duties of the venture being shared equally between the parties.

In concert with this agreement, ATBS has been awarded a contract to supply battery systems for SAIC Motor's plug-in hybrid vehicle program. This program seeks to develop a plug-in hybrid vehicle that meets the growing demand for alternative-energy transportation in China.

SAIC Motor is also developing a broad overall portfolio of "new energy" vehicles. SAIC Motor previously disclosed plans for a hybrid Roewe 750 sedan and a plug-in hybrid version of the Roewe 550, which could cut fuel consumption by 20 percent and 50 percent respectively, in addition to plans for introducing electric vehicles on the market in 2012. The Roewe 550 and 750 will utilize A123 battery cells.

They say skinny is the new black. No wonder, then, that thin-film players stole the spotlight this week.

Last Friday, we saw start-up Solyndra file for an initial public offering. But filing the papers doesn't guarantee an IPO. Just look at China's Trony Solar, which just this month pulled its offering in the face of investor indifference.

There are a few features that might make Solyndra stand out, however. First, the company has landed a loan guarantee of more than a half-billion dollars from the Department of Energy for a new factory in California. That significantly decreases the risks of the company's expansion, and, like A123 (Nasdaq: AONE), gives it the glow of political favoritism. Second, this is an American company, and U.S. investors may be more inclined to back a homegrown outfit.

Just as noteworthy is Solyndra's unique technology, which involves cylindrical modules. The company believes that this format maximizes sunlight collection, since the modules pick up 360 degrees of direct, diffuse, and reflected light. Because the panels can be placed horizontally on a rooftop, rather than tilted, Solyndra argues that more panels can be placed on a rooftop, thus delivering the lowest levelized cost of energy.

Targeting commercial rooftops means that Solyndra will be challenging players like SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWRA), Suntech Power (NYSE: STP), and Energy Conversion Devices (Nasdaq: ENER). I would need to see more performance data before getting too excited about this new offering. Dividing the new facility's capital cost of $1.38 billion by the 500 megawatts of anticipated capacity yields a cost per watt of $2.76, which is quite steep. The company needs to generate a whole lot more electricity per rooftop to be competitive.

First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR), the thin-film king, made headlines this week on several fronts.

First, it announced that it's in talks to build a French manufacturing facility with partner EDF Energies Nouvelles. All of the plant's output would be sold to EDF EN for the first 10 years. This would mark First Solar's second European facility, after its German plant.

Second, and less encouraging, was some news on First Solar's pipeline of utility-scale projects. The company pulled one application in Colorado, while the Bureau of Land Management denied applications for four California projects that totaled around 2.5 gigawatts. A Wedbush Morgan analyst also warned that permitting issues and lawsuits could hamstring a 550-megawatt project elsewhere in California.

ATERTOWN, Mass., Jan. 14, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A123 Systems (Nasdaq:AONE - News), a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphate(TM) lithium ion batteries and systems, today announced a battery supply agreement with Fisker Automotive, a new American automaker building premium green vehicles. The supply agreement is for battery systems for the Fisker Karma Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The Karma is scheduled to be launched in late 2010 and expected to be one of the cleanest, most fuel-efficient cars in the world while still offering industry-leading style and performance.

A123 Systems will provide Fisker Automotive with advanced automotive battery systems that combine high power and energy density with excellent safety and life performance -- characteristics required to meet Fisker's stringent technical specifications. Fisker Automotive and A123 will also collaborate on Fisker's Project Nina platform, with the intent of having A123 supply batteries for that vehicle based on meeting the automaker's performance and delivery requirements. Project Nina is expected to launch in 2012.

"Fisker Automotive selected A123 because of the company's ability to meet our performance needs and rapidly scale to our production volume," said Henrik Fisker, Chief Executive Officer of Fisker Automotive. "Fisker is committed to developing environmentally friendly cars that don't sacrifice style or performance. A123's technology will ensure the Karma delivers."

The multi-year agreement provides that A123 is the selected battery system supplier for the Fisker Karma. A123 plans to manufacture the cells and systems at its Livonia, Mich. facility with production slated to commence later this year.

"We believe the opportunity to supply batteries for Fisker's premium plug-in hybrid vehicles is further confirmation of the competitive advantages of A123's technology, including our ability to deliver on the critical safety, high power, useable energy and extended life requirements for PHEV applications," said David Vieau, President and Chief Executive Officer of A123 Systems. "A123 looks forward to a long partnership with Fisker Automotive that will help advance the future of transportation, improve fuel economy and reduce global CO(2) emissions."

Langfristig gutes Investment :
A123: Analyst Bryce Dille set a $16 target on the battery maker, asserting that given expectations of better than 100% compounded sales growth through 2012, the stock looks cheap. He sees sales of $136.1 million this year, $311.3 million next year and $743.4 million in 2012, with the company turning profitable in 2012. Dille thinks the company’s lithium ion batteries offer an effective solution for hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars, heavy duty transportation and certain grid-storage applications.

Get ready for a lot of battery talk
Mass-market electric cars are coming. This isn't news. It'll be a long time before electric vehicle power completely replaces internal combustion, but with mileage requirements heading sharply up in coming years, the world's automakers are scrambling to get cleaner and greener technologies out of the labs and onto dealer lots.

The big obstacle to affordable, practical electric cars has long been battery technology. Vast resources have been thrown at this problem in recent years, and results are finally at hand. Nissan's all-electric Leaf should be on the market by the end of this year, with the electric version of Ford's Focus following a few months later.

But it's the batteries that will make these cars -- and many, many more -- possible at affordable prices. The state of Michigan has provided incentives for electric-car-battery manufacturers, hoping both to spur mass production and to become a center for battery technology. Already, several companies -- including Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), A123 Systems (Nasdaq: AONE), and Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW), which is based in Midland -- are taking advantage of the offer to build battery plants in the state, and more investment is expected.

Living with an EV
A lot of work is being done on making these cars easy to live with, as well. AeroVironment (Nasdaq: AVAV), best known for its military work, has partnered with Nissan to create in-home car chargers that operate on 220-volt circuits, speeding up recharging time significantly. The chargers will be made to a new global standard, and should work with any brand of electric car. Installation costs should be around $2,200, the company says.

But there are still many questions about the (massive) demands that electric cars will make on the nation's energy grid. Charging an electric car will double many households' energy consumption, according to some estimates, and while some thought has been put into managing that energy consumption on a household level -- Ford and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) are pairing up to utilize the software giant's "Hohm" system in upcoming vehicles -- the larger-scale questions will be occupying a lot of brainpower as these cars move toward mass adoption.

The End of the Gasoline Age
By John Rosevear
May 28, 2010

All of a sudden, the auto industry's movement toward electric vehicles (EVs) has become a stampede. Toyota's (NYSE: TM) plan to invest $50 million in Silicon Valley's Tesla Motors got a lot of attention when it was announced last week, but there's much more going on. This is clearly a moment when established global players, emerging-markets powers, and brand-new startups are all rushing in to what seems more and more likely to be a historic shift to electrified transportation.

They're rushing to claim more than just market share -- governments around the world are dishing out subsidies, hoping to speed the transition to a less-oil-dependent future. Here in the U.S., House and Senate leaders, accompanied by representatives from battery maker A123 Systems (Nasdaq: AONE) and start-up EV maker Bright Automotive, just introduced an $11 billion plan intended to speed the development of infrastructure needed to support the mass adoption of EVs.

As drafted, the bill would provide up to $1 billion for as many as eight "deployment communities" -- cities and regions that pledge to use the funds to establish public charging stations and other EV-specific infrastructure. Few such stations exist now, but they're seen as key to mass EV adoption, and their development -- along with other infrastructure, such as beefed-up power transmission networks -- is becoming a priority.

A global shift
The U.S. government has been offering alt-fuel-related incentives for years, but they're not alone. Japan's clean-car incentives program has driven Toyota's Prius to the top of that country's sales carts, and China is widely expected to offer incentives to clean-car buyers in the near future.

That latter expectation is probably behind the joint-venture deal that Mercedes-Benz's corporate parent Daimler (NYSE: DAI) just announced with Chinese battery-and-auto-maker BYD. The two companies are expected to release a jointly developed car in the near future, likely a Daimler-enhanced version of BYD's all-electric e6.

BYD, which is partly owned by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B), has previously said that it will launch the e6 in the U.S. by the end of this year, joining a long list of automakers promising new EVs by late this year or early 2011.

A whole lot of Leafs
Speaking of EVs due in late 2010, Nissan (OTC: NSANY.PK) on Thursday announced a $1.7 billion investment in a new lithium-ion battery factory in Smyrna, Tenn. When it opens in 2012, the plant will be able to supply battery packs for up to 200,000 vehicles annually -- and right next door is an assembly plant that will be able to produce up to 150,000 all-electric Nissan Leafs a year.

While Nissan probably isn't expecting those kinds of volumes initially -- CEO Carlos Ghosn recently said that the U.S. allocation of 2011 Leafs is already sold out, at 13,000 -- 150,000 Leafs a year is an ambitious number. Nissan is clearly counting on volume to make a reasonable profit at its announced $33,000 price for the Leaf. And they're counting on more than that -- the size of the new battery plant suggests that the Leaf will be joined by other Nissan EVs in the not-too-distant future.

Nissan wasn't the only automaker announcing a battery-plant investment this week -- Ford (NYSE: F) and start-up CODA Motors announced smaller, but similar, investments in plants in Detroit and Ohio, respectively. CODA is a southern California-based start-up that is planning to bring a Chinese-made electric four-door sedan to the U.S. market. When? You guessed it -- late this year.

Whether CODA delivers or not, it's clear that EVs are about to hit the mainstream in a big way.

But will any of these cars be fun to drive?
Just in case you horsepower fiends were starting to despair, imagining a future of shoebox-sized cars that sound like sewing machines and look like they were designed by Birkenstock, take heart: According to a report in the U.K.'s Auto Express, Volkswagen's super-mega high-end Bugatti division -- builders of the $1-million-plus 250-mph-plus Veyron supercar, a leading over-the-top status symbol among car-mad hedge fund managers worldwide -- has built an 800 horsepower electric sports car prototype.

It is unclear whether the car, said by someone close to the project to have "absolutely unbelievable" acceleration, will ever see production -- but if it does, expect drop-dead styling, mind-blowing performance ... and a seven-figure price tag.

Gestern ging's 10% hoch nachdem die Nachricht kam , das Afghanistan voller Lithium ist ...!

A123 Systems (Nasdaq: AONE)
This maker of advanced battery systems was initially a hot IPO, but perhaps came out just a bit too early. The company posted several lackluster quarters after going public, sending shares down from $28 to under $8. Shares have started to rebound in recent sessions back up $10 as investors start to realize they were judging the company's results while the electric car market has yet to really take off. But it will. Soon after the Nissan (NSANY.PK) Leaf is released in late 2010, a slew of additional electric cars will hit the market from companies like Mitsubishi (MSBHY), Smart, Chrysler/Fiat and perhaps BMW.

As investors start to re-focus on this potentially massive market, shares are likely to turn over a new leaf, perhaps back up above the $20 mark. The next few quarters will likely be lackluster for A123 Systems, so these shares will only benefit in a rallying market as investors once again focus on high-growth opportunities.

The Road Ahead
Ironically, if the prior three paragraphs really matter to you, this is probably not the right stock for you at this point. It would be nice to see improvement in shipments and margins, but these are very early days in A123's commercialization process. Right now, deals are arguably much more important than current revenue.

To that point, the news has been mixed lately. A123 has a relatively broad customer base and clients like Fisker and Navistar (NYSE:NAV) still seem to be on track to ramp up in 2011. Unfortunately, the company is seeing delays in grid orders (apparently an "order timing" issue) and the company is no longer working with Chrysler. On this later point, it looks like A123 walked away or refused to match a lower-priced bid from a rival - is this a sign of A123 prudently turning down self-destructive business, or a warning sign that A123's cost structure could be problematic?

The Bottom Line
I still like A123's technology, and I still think the company has a fighting chance to be a significant player in the emerging high-end battery market. It is clearly going to be a crowded market, though, and large companies like Sanyo (Nasdaq:SANYY), Panasonic (NYSE:OC), and Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI) have ample R&D resources and long histories in the industrial battery markets. Apart from that, there are other emerging tech rivals like BYD (Nasdaq:BYDDY) and Ener1 (Nasdaq:HEV) that could steal a march on A123.

Electric-Car Component Makers Power Up

ByGeorge DeVaux, RealMoney Contributor , On Wednesday January 12, 2011, 2:30 pm EST

High petroleum prices will help to drive the market for electric storage devices that power electric vehicles. And two companies that produce the components for electric cars are worth watching.

Electric vehicles need to store electricity. Batteries -- think A123 -- and capacitors -- think Maxwell Technologies -- use different storage approaches.

A rechargeable battery uses reversible chemical reactions to store the energy. An EDLC (electric double layer capacitor) stores the electrons on the surface of its component material. A material which does not conduct electricity (a dielectric) separates the positive and negative charge layers. (Note that these types of capacitors are sometimes called ultracapacitors or supercapacitors. These terms refer to the relative energy density, and the total energy storage can range from tiny -- as in a cell phone -- to very large.)

For the transportation market, the significant parameters include cost, energy density (watt hours per kilogram, or W•h/kg), power density (a measure of time to charge), volumetric energy storage and lifetime (measured in charge discharge cycles).

The energy density of a lead acid battery ranges from about 30 to 40 W•h/kg. For a lithium ion battery, the energy density is on the order of 160 W•h/kg. This dramatic differential helps explain the use of lithium ion batteries in automobiles.

For the next few years, lithium ion batteries will supply the bulk of the power storage market for electric vehicles such as the Volt produced by General Motors. Ultracapacitors will serve as a complement in regenerative braking and to provide surges of power for acceleration and hill-climbing. Over several years, ultracapacitors may close the density gap with batteries.

A123 makes lithium ion batteries. The transportation sector accounts for about 50% of its product revenue. Products for the electric grid account for about 30%. The balance is for general commercial purposes. In its third-quarter report, A123 revealed that its transport customers are ramping at a slower pace than originally anticipated. A six-month delay is not critical, but the cash runway is getting shorter. A significant ramp in sales could alter the cash flow from negative to positive with a significant impact on the price-to-sales ratio.

Batteries require very long discharge/charge cycles (hours), vs. seconds for ultracapacitors. Batteries can be cycled only a few thousand times vs. several hundred thousand times for ultracapacitors. Batteries currently provide higher energy densities, but that advantage may disappear.

Maxwell Technologies produces capacitors for a number of industry sectors. It recently received a $1.7 million contract from DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) for an integrated system that combines an advanced capacitor, an advanced battery and an integrated management system. Additional contract phases could add $8 million. These contract amounts are significant when compared with Maxwell's R&D budget of about $15 million per year. Also significant is DARPA's approach to rapidly fielding technology. The organization is focused on getting technology into the hands of the leading developer as fast as practical. This contract could significantly affect Maxwell's top line within a few years.

EDLCs are used in regenerative braking systems to store energy and to reaccelerate the vehicle. More than 1,000 buses use EDLCs as the primary energy system. Because the charge range is typical less than 10 miles, these bus systems require recharge stations along the route.

Most EDLCs use activated carbon as component material for the storage of electric charge. Substantial improvement in the amount of surface area will come from other forms of carbon such as nano tubes, graphene, aero gels and carbides. Improvements in the dielectric layer will permit higher voltages. An improvement by a factor of 10 in energy density is likely in the commercial marketplace over the next few years. Ford has sponsored significant carbon nano tube work for EDLCs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Currently, commercial EDLCs are available with an energy density up to 30 W•h/kg. Laboratory demonstrations are already at three times that level.

TWST: What is your top-rated stock today and why?

Mr. Galves: We have "buy" ratings on Ener1 and A123. Like I said before, we also think Tesla is going to be a winner in this space. I think we are most positive on A123 currently. The stock currently trades at only about 1.5 times book value. That implies very little expectations for a stock with this much potential growth. Yet when we talk to automakers and other battery competitors, they all consider A123 a top five player in the industry for the long term. We think that they have a very strong long-term potential, and we see some near-term catalysts. One of their key customers is Fisker Automotive, another startup automaker.

Press Release Source: The Bedford Report On Monday March 21, 2011, 7:35 am EDT

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - 03/21/11) - Following President Obama's pledge of getting one million electric cars on the road by 2015, electric powered vehicle production is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Lithium ion batteries are considered the most significant factor for the success of modern electric vehicles. Lithium ion batteries use various materials depending on the purpose, with cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium typically being the primary elements. The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the Industrial Electrical Equipment Industry and provides research reports on A123 Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:AONE - News) and Ener1, Inc. (NASDAQ:HEV - News). Access to the full company reports can be found at:

Despite losing its bid to produce batteries for the Chevrolet "Volt" last year, A123 Systems remains one of the most recognizable names in lithium-ion battery design. A123 recently announced a production contract with an unnamed "major North American automaker" to provide batteries for an electric car debuting in 2013.

Earlier this month A123's closest competitor, Ener1, said that it lost $10.9 million, or 8 cents per share, during the quarter ended Dec. 31. That compares with a loss of nearly $15 million, or 12 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue more than tripled last quarter to $33.1 million. Ener1 said the highlight of the year was the launch of a grid energy storage division that won a supply agreement with a division of the Russian Federal Grid Co.

WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 10, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A123 Systems (Nasdaq:AONE),  a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphate® lithium ion  batteries and systems, today announced that it will supply six Grid  Battery Systems (GBSs) to Northern Powergrid,  an electricity distribution network operator that delivers power to  more than 3.8 million customers in the U.K. The GBSs will be designed  for peak-load shifting and to manage fluctuations in voltage on the  U.K.'s power grid. Expected to be operational by the end of 2012, the  systems will be deployed as part of the Customer-Led Network Revolution  (CLNR), the U.K.'s largest smart grid project funded through the Office  of the Gas and Electricity Markets' (Ofgem) Low Carbon Networks Fund.

"The CLNR will evaluate a number of innovative network technologies to  accommodate increasing quantities of low-carbon loads and renewable  generation necessary to meet the U.K.'s climate change goals. One aspect  of this multifaceted project is to determine how the use of storage  technology may reduce peak loading on our network and thereby offset the  need for network reinforcement," said Jim Cardwell, head of regulation  and strategy at Northern Powergrid. "A123's battery energy storage  systems will showcase how such technology can be part of the U.K.'s  low-carbon future."

A123's GBS storage systems, which include the company's Smart Grid Domain Controller,  are designed to provide Northern Powergrid with robust solutions to  more efficiently manage voltage regulation requirements to help maintain  grid stability and power quality as more clean energy resources are  added. The six GBSs that A123 will supply to Northern Powergrid include a  2.5MW system, two 100kW systems and three 50kW systems. Each will be  designed to maintain these power capabilities for up to two hours,  adding flexibility to the distribution network and helping to provide  consistent delivery of reliable power to customers.

"Grid operators around the world are faced with a variety of technical  hurdles when trying to add significant renewable capacity. In the U.K.,  distribution networks often have limitations that make adding high  concentrations of wind and solar difficult," said Robert Johnson, vice  president of the Energy Solutions Group at A123. "Battery energy storage  can overcome these challenges by efficiently managing the voltage  levels of the power network, and we look forward to working with  Northern Powergrid on the CLNR smart grid project, which we view as an  excellent opportunity for A123 to showcase the versatility and  performance of our GBS solutions."
