Drilling Update

Rachel North Exploration Well 14/15-2 (2nd December 2010)

Drilling Update

Rachel North Exploration Well 14/15-2

Oil Discovery

Desire Petroleum plc (AIM:DES) the oil and gas company wholly focussed on the North Falkland Basin, wishes to advise that the 14/15-2 Rachel North well has reached a total depth of 3052 metres.

Preliminary data collected indicate that this well is an oil discovery. The company has run an initial suite of wireline logs and this together with the drilling data indicate that the well encountered a 349 metres gross interval from 2621 metres to 2970 metres of sands and shales with hydrocarbons ,of which 57 metres is net pay in multiple zones. The thickest zone is 8 metres thick with an average porosity of 20% . Other zones are thinly bedded and lower porosity but require further analysis from additional wireline logs to establish reservoir potential.

Desire now intends to complete the wireline logging and wireline sampling programme to obtain more information on the reservoir quality, the hydrocarbon saturations and the fluid type to assess the significance of this discovery. Further information will be released in due course.

Commenting on the well, Stephen Phipps Chairman of Desire said, "It is highly encouraging that the initial results from the Rachel North well endorse both our findings and geological model from the previously drilled Rachel sidetrack well. This discovery combined with Rockhoppers' Sea Lion discovery confirms our belief that the eastern flank play fairway in the North Falkland Basin is highly prospective and that further oil fields will be discovered in this area".

Subsurface support is provided to Desire Petroleum by Senergy (GB) Ltd and the results reported today are based on the work of the Senergy operations team.

This statement has been approved by Dr Ian Duncan of Desire Petroleum plc, who is a Fellow of the Geological Society, Chartered Geologist, and a member

of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists with over 35 years

experience in petroleum exploration and management.

Oil & Gas Round-Up

31.12.10 17:46
Oil & Gas Round-Up: 2010 - The Falkland Islands

31 December 2010

Far too much has been said here and elsewhere about the Falkland Islands this year, and it will no doubt be more of the same next year.

Falkland Oil and Gas (FOGL) had a dry hole at its Toroa prospect, the first and currently only well to the east of the Falkland Islands. No sign of a rig for further drilling yet, and its joint venture partner BHP Billiton has since decided not to continue to the second exploration phase on the southern licences. Falkland Oil and Gas is keeping the faith and assumed 100% and operatorship of the southern licences.

Borders and Southern (BOR) has signed up a rig to drill two of its prospects in the south, in late 2011.

In the North Falkland Basin, Desire Petroleum (DES) declared Liz a gas discovery, but it needs further analysis, Rachel and Rachel North were unsuccessful, although Rachel North was initially declared an oil discovery and then was found to be water wet on test a few days later. Desire Petroleum is now pinning its hopes on the Dawn/Jacinta well, however the latest news is that the Jacinta target is dry and Desire is drilling on to Dawn. After that, its more 3D seismic acquisition.

Rockhopper Exploration (RKH) recorded a dry hole at Ernest and discovered and flow tested oil at its Sea Lion prospect. An appraisal well and a further exploration well outside the Sea Lion Discovery Area are next up on the agenda as well as 3D seismic acquisition programmes on its own account and jointly with Desire and Argos. Rockhopper is also hoping to tie down a deal to keep the Ocean Guardian drilling rig in the Falkland Islands for further drilling after the current contract ends.

Argos Resources (ARG) arrived late to the party when its shares started trading on AIM in late July alongside a £22 million fundraising at 31 pence per share. Argos will use the funds to undertake 3D seismic acquisition over its acreage. Argos has also held out the possibility of a well in late 2011.

Share prices of the Falkland Island exploration companies are heavily influenced by punter passion and can rightly be described as a rollercoaster ride:

Rockhopper Exploration shares started 2010 at 50 pence, reached the dizzy heights of 500 pence and has ended it on 367 pence.

Desire Petroleum started at 90 pence, dropped as low as 40 pence, climbed back up to nudge 170 pence and following its latest bad news is exiting the year around 48 pence.

Falkland Oil and Gas opened the year at 130 pence per share, reached 245 pence in anticipation of a positive well result, crashed to 95 pence on the dry hole and is currently just above 100 pence.

Even Borders & Southern which hasn't yet drilled a well in the Falklands, is ending the year pretty much where it started, about 63 pence per share, however that ignores the drop to 45 pence, the jump up to 92 pence and the subsequent slide back to 63 pence.

Argos Resources has done a bit better, from a starting point in July of 31 pence, the share price touched 70 pence and has since dropped back to finish the year on 44 pence.

Who knows where these companies shares price will be this time next year, but unless it has more than one oil discovery to its account, the Falkland Islands could be competing with offshore Namibia for the passionate punters money.

The Falklands oil story....

30.03.11 21:06
www.moneyweek.com/investments/commodities/...gnites-13005.aspx

The Falklands oil story reignites By Tom Bulford Mar 29, 2011

Last week a successful drilling result from Rockhopper (LON:RKH) reignited the story of Falklands oil.

Shares in Rockhopper (RKH), having earlier hit 290p, closed the week 17% higher at 259p while those of the other Falkland oil plays Desire Petroleum (LON:DES), Falkland Oil & Gas (LON:FOGL) and Borders & Southern (LON:BOR) also edged higher.

Rockhopper's success follows a sequence of dry wells that have dulled the optimism of investors. But, "recent market concerns are overdone", says Merrill Lynch. With the exploration program for the south Atlantic far from over, investors certainly should not be giving up hope.

In fact, this latest well could finally establish the Falklands as an oil producing region - heralding a potential bonanza for penny share investors.

Rockhopper's new well could be worth over $2.5bn!
Rockhopper is the only one of the group so far to have made a genuine oil discovery, at its Sea Lion prospect. Although a subsequent independent review, disputed by Rockhopper, suggested that this could represent an exaggeration of some 30%, the best estimate for the amount of oil recoverable from Sea Lion stands at 242 million barrels.

This latest successful well was drilled 2.3km west-north-west of the original discovery and was the first such appraisal well designed to investigate reservoir presence and oil column at a downdip location. Although the oil bearing zone here was a little thinner than at the first well, the result confirmed the conclusions of seismic surveys. This allowed Rockhopper's Chief Executive Sam Moody to state that Sea Lion is "highly likely to prove commercially viable".

Could Toumaz finally start selling this year?

Shares in Toumaz (TMZ) hold steady at 7.25p on the announcement of full year results.

Their key product is the 'Sensium' digital plaster, which detects vital body signs such as heartbeat and relays this via a wireless connection to healthcare professionals.

After years of development Toumaz could see its first sales this year.
If so, this will finally establish the Falklands as an oil producing region and demonstrate that wildcat exploration can create real value for shareholders. Rockhopper's consultant RPS Energy has estimated that 170 million barrels of recoverable oil are worth $2.5bn, and that is on the basis of a reasonably conservative discount rate of 10% and oil at $80 per barrel.

In a presentation given in February, Desire Petroleum gave the estimates of its own consultant, Senergy. Again using a 10% discount rate, it calculated that a 150mmbl discovery would be worth $1.99bn at a $75 oil price and $3.17bn at $100.

Figures like these explain why investors have been willing to put up hundreds of millions of pounds for an exercise that has sometimes seemed like taking dollar bills down to the south Atlantic and scattering them in the ocean. So what comes next?

Who could be next to strike in the Falklands?
So far all the drilling activity has been in the North Falklands Basin, and conducted from the Ocean Guardian drilling rig. This has now moved to the Desire's Ninky prospect, where drilling has started and results should be known within 30 days. This is one of six wells for which Desire already has sufficient funding. Rockhopper, meanwhile raised £200m last October with which to drill new targets but also to do more appraisal work and field development plans at Sea Lion.

All of this is taking place in the North Falklands Basin, but progress has been slower in the South Falklands Basin. Here, the deeper waters require a different type of rig to the Ocean Guardian, and the two stock market plays are Borders & Southern and Falkland Oil & Gas.

Borders & Southern has contracted the Eirik Raude semi-submersible rig that will make its way to the Falklands on co

and DES must be the closest thing to legally printing money, check out their new uploaded PDFs on their site and the picture shows that it is just a matter of RKH's time and money before DES is brought back into the cold with probably an initial 100mmb to reign in a few ii's.

40p at least before TD and if thats sounds rampy how about the median OIP they are talking about across their revised targets which would take DES back to its highs.
Only fly in the ointment for next year is the OG leaving the falklands but to be honest i expect DES and RKH to be farmed into by then by the same partner.

...Left till someone has to announce another drill slot... Is this why the Desire SP stalled a little today?

Are people keeping their powder dry until they know if this next well 14/10-10 will be the last in this campaign...

Nervous few days for Desire if they do not raise the money now for the 14/15-F1 location drill or RKH don't come up with another proposal to help fund it for them ...

Think this is the news that will kick start the Des SP again, if it comes in time although I'm sure they are all working on this as we speak.

crofty, without it being rude, but its simplistic to value on such narrow criteria.
"Based on an expected 750mmbbls recoverable for Rockhopper and their current market cap we are seeing a value of 90p per barrel, pretty poor by any standard,"
rkh are NOT being valued at 750mb, less than half that. so at least double your 90p. you don't value them on possible numbers, only the PROVED.
it is imo, of course forgotten or at least neglected, what the next drill gives desire.
ie, something, (using the rkh guess,) like 10% of sealion in area1, thats minimal. 4% des share, and its seems maybe casper too. what %age maybe 20%. to which, imo again, will be sold by des, likely to the rkh farminee.
i do agree though to the sp spike and then shorted, but not to the current prices.
fridays rise? can't see it being due to the rkh drill spot in area 1, been known some time.
a large increase to the rkh 10/9 drill oil estimates, result?

RIG UPDATE

Desire Petroleum plc (AIM:DES), the exploration company focusing on the North Falkland Basin, announces that the rig contract with Diamond Offshore Drilling (UK) Ltd for use of the drilling unit the Ocean Guardian for operations in the North Falkland Basin has been amended.

Under the amended contract an undefined number of optional wells may be drilled up to 1 st March 2012, at which time the Ocean Guardian will leave the Falklands on a long term contract with another operator. Desire must declare the exercise of such options on or before the spud of the previous well in the campaign.

The rig is currently drilling well 14/10-9 for Rockhopper Exploration PLC who have announced they will follow this with a well on the Desire farmin area PL004b.

Desire is investigating all the possibilities to utilise the Ocean Guardian until the end of the contract. By SansSerif

On DES CPR Page 87 of 155, DES show the SLMC at 2477M
On RKH 14/10-9 RNS -1, RKH show SLMC OWC at 2501M

Does this mean RKH SLMC may come up with some bigger pay as the doodle suggests as the OWC is deeper?

The doodle also shows that the next drill (assuming the plans are concrete) what we'll be targeting..... (Bev looks quite thick, Shona (W) quite thin, SLMC quite thick)

Share Price Estimates

I thought it worth doing some estimates of share value which cover period from now until the likely results from 10/10. The data in the recent Senergy CPR provide a reasonably solid starting point, and I've used the usual method of valuation – NPV reduced by COS and/or an arbitrary operational discount. The mid-case figure is not too different from MM's 100mmb estimate.

1. Assumptions
Low-case net [DES only] – 35.6mmbs [SLX /CasperW/ShonaW/Beverley]
Mid-case net [DES only] – 115mmbs [ as above ]
Realised Oil Price - $85pb.
NPV10 based on gross [RKH+DES] recoverables – $14pb [mid-case $15pb]
COS [weighted average] – 39%
Operational Risk Discount – 60%
Share base - 342m [post appraisal and Jayne prospects – 392m]
$/£ - 1.60 Acreage value – 10pps.

2. West Flank Prospect Valuation [Low-case]
35.6m x 0.39 = 13.88mmbs x $14pb = $194m x 0.4 = $77.6m.
Divided by 342m shares = $0.23ps/1.60 = £0.14ps
Given the existing SP of 25p, an arbitrary 10p might be added for acreage , giving £0.24p . So with a certain amount of hindsight, this mirrors where we are now quite nicely.

… and using the same method:

3.West Flank Discovery [Low-case] - value = £0.46ps.
Assumes 10/10 success, and 60% operational discount only applied to NPV. Scale of increase limited because of high COS of prospects. Includes 10p acreage.

And again assuming 10/10 success...

4.The mid-case 115mmbs recoverable from the CPR matches fairly well with MM's upper end prediction. With the same price and risk assumptions, but a conservatively increased NPV at $15pb – we get:

115mmbs x $15 x .40 = $690m/342 = $2.02ps = £1.26ps.+10p = £1.36ps.

5.Assuming 10/10 success, and increasing the realised oil price to $100 would raise the mid-case NPV10 to $18pb and give a value of £1.61ps, with low-case up to £0.57ps.[including 10p acreage].

6. Mid-case 115mmbs risked at only 20% to reflect post appraisal booked reserves and assuming an increased sharebase to 392m [covering cost 2 more wells] gives value =£ 2.20ps [oil price $85]; value = £2.64ps [oil price $100] - no additions for other prospects/acreage value included.

7.The Jaynes – the additional prospect value assuming mid-case recoverables approximates to:
100mmbs x $9.5pb* x 0.31[COS] = $295m/392m =$0.75 x 0.4 = £0.19ps
[*Stand-alone NPV10, COS and operational risk applied]
A successful exploration drill would raise this value to £0.61ps

8. Buy out valuation based on midcase 115mmbs Wflank+30mmbs Jaynes approximates to - 145mmbs x $15pb* = $2175/392 = $5.5 =£3.47ps
[* This could obviously be anything between $10/20]

This provides a bit of share pricing context, which should hopefully be a useful yardstick, whether you've already done your own calculations or not.

Good Luck for 10/10 and beyond!

In addition, investors had more updates from the closely followed exploration campaign in the Falkland Islands to digest this week.

Rockhopper Exploration (LON:RKH) this week confirmed that it has completed coring operations for the sidetrack to the 14/10-9z well.

Earlier this month Rockhopper revealed that the latest appraisal well on the Sea Lion complex was a success. Additionally the well also made a new oil discovery in the Casper exploration target.

A sidetrack was subsequently drilled to help gather more information on these reservoirs.

The sidetrack was drilled to a total depth of 2600 metres. And 60 metres of core was cut through Casper and Sea Lion reservoirs.

Rockhopper’s next well will be a joint venture with Desire Petroleum (LON:DES) in the recently agreed farm in area.

The well will target the most southerly extent of the Sea Lion Main Complex, and it will also test the Beverley exploration prospect.

Meanwhile, Falkland Oil and Gas (LON:FOGL) told investors that the Leiv Eiriksson rig is expected to arrive in the Falklands in late January.

Well 14/15-4 Update

Desire Petroleum plc (AIM:DES) the exploration company wholly focused on the North Falkland Basin notes the announcement made today by Rockhopper Exploration plc ("the Operator") regarding the 14/15-4 well. Desire has a 40% carried interest in this well.

Please click on the below link to view the Operator's full announcement:

www.rns-pdf.londonstockexchange.com/rns/8490T_-2011-12-13.pdf

It should be noted that Desire's Shona prospect, as mapped in its recently released Competent Persons Report, is referred to in the Rockhopper announcement and below as Casper South.

The Well penetrated multiple reservoir targets: Beverley, Casper South, Casper and Sea Lion Main Complex and was drilled on Rockhopper operated licence PL004b. The Operator earned a 60% interest through the drilling of the Well.

According to the Operator, wireline logging and formation test data indicate the following:

All four targets are hydrocarbon bearing and no water wet sands were observed in the Well.

Highlights

· Total gross reservoir: 89m (292 ft)

· Total net pay: 57m (187 ft)

Beverley: Wet Gas Discovery

· Gross reservoir: 27.5m (90 ft)

· Net gas pay: 25.8m (85 ft)

· Net to Gross: 94%

· Reservoir quality:

-Porosity: Average 22%, Maximum 27%

-Permeability: Average 45mD, Maximum 144mD*

· No gas water or gas oil contact observed

Casper South: Oil and Wet Gas Discovery

· Gross reservoir: 24.5m (80 ft)

· Net oil pay: 11.6m (38 ft)

· Net gas pay: 8.5m (28 ft)

· Net to Gross: 83%

· Reservoir quality:

· Casper South Gas:

        -Porosity: Average 25%, Maximum 30%

        -Permeability: Average 212mD, Maximum 1327mD*

· Casper South Oil:

-Porosity: Average 27%, Maximum 34%

-Permeability: Average 1011mD, Maximum 5872mD*

· Gas oil contact observed at 2429m mdrkb

· No oil water contact observed

*NOTE: permeability log data is negatively affected by the presence of gas.  The Operator believes that the effective permeability in the Beverley and Casper South gas legs will be significantly higher than measured on the log.  Permeability in Beverley is likely to be in the region of 500mD, while permeability in the Casper South gas leg will be similar to those in the Casper South oil leg.

Casper: Successful appraisal well

· Gross reservoir: 12m (39 ft)

· Net oil pay: 2.4m (8 ft)

· Net to Gross: 22%

· Reservoir quality:

        -Porosity: Average 16%, Maximum 24%

        -Permeability: Average 33mD, Maximum 71mD

· No oil water contact observed

Sea Lion Main Complex (SLMC): Successful appraisal well

· Gross reservoir: 25m (82 ft)

· Net oil pay: 8m (26 ft)

· Net to Gross: 32%

· Reservoir quality:

-Porosity   : Average 19%, Maximum 24%

        -Permeability: Average 80mD, Maximum 195mD

· No oil water contact observed

The Well was located approximately 12.1 km to the south west of the 14/10-2 discovery well and 6.3 km to the south of well 14/10-9 and within the area of licence PL004b.

Beverley

The Beverley sand was encountered at 2359m mdrkb. The Well penetrated the Beverley prospect near the crest of the structure and the gross reservoir package of 27m was approximately 10m thicker than prognosed, net gas pay was 25.8m. Reservoir quality is good with average porosity of 22% and average permeability of 44 mD.  Analysis of mud logs indicate the gas is likely to be a wet gas. PVT analysis will be required to confirm the GCR.  From the observed formation pressure gradients the Operator believes that the gas/oil contact observed in Casper at well 14/10-9 and Casper South at well 14/15-4 is likely to exist in Beverley.  As a result the Operator believes Beverley may be oil bearing downdip.

Casper South

The Casper South sand was encountered at 2420m mdrkb. Reservoir quality is good with average porosity of 25%in the gas leg and 27% in the oil leg.   Average permeability was 212 mD in the gas leg and 1011 mD in the oil leg.  Net gas pay was 8.5m and net oil pay was 11.6m. A gas oil contact was observed at 2429m mdrkb, very close to that observed in well 14/10-9 in Casper. Analysis of mud logs indicate the gas is likely to be a wet gas. PVT analysis will be required to confirm the GCR. Casper South is a separate fan lobe, to the south of and apparently in communication with the Casper fan, which the Operator currently maps to extend over an area of greater than 100km2 with significant down-dip oil potential.

Casper

The Well additionally penetrated the Casper sand some 6.3km to the south of the 14/10-9 Casper Discovery well in a relatively down-dip position and at the very feather edge of the mapped fan lobe. The Casper reservoir was encountered at 2450m mdrkb and is entirely below the gas oil contact observed at well 14/10-9. The Casper reservoir sands are all oil bearing at 14/15-4. The Operator believes well 14/15-4 defines the southernmost limit of Casper with a thin reservoir section of low net to gross sand. The presence of Casper at this location enables the Operator to confirm mapping of this fan lobe to the maximum extent of its seismic expression and increase the volumes currently carried for that prospect. Analysis of mud logs in well 14/10-9 indicates that the gas at Casper is a wet gas. PVT analysis will be required to confirm the GCR.

SLMC

The Well penetrated the SLMC in licence PL004b approximately 12.1km from the 14/10-2 discovery well, 6.3km to the south of well 14/10-9 and 13.8km from the northern most successful appraisal well 14/10-7. The SLMC was encountered at 2474m mdrkb. The Operator believes the Well is close to the southernmost limit of the Sea Lion field and at the outer edge of its former maximum case area. The Well penetrated a section which established the gross thickness of reservoir as mapped. The quality of the reservoir at this outer edge of the fan system was as prognosed with a lesser net to gross and slightly lower porosities than in the main core area of the field. Formation pressure testing established that the oil lies on the same pressure gradient as observed over the rest of the field, and oil samples have been recovered for subsequent PVT analysis.

The Operator will now complete a short offset sidetrack (10m from main well bore) to obtain core in the Beverley, Casper South and SLMC formations. These operations are expected to take 12 days following which the Well will be plugged and abandoned as planned. A further announcement will be issued once coring operations have been completed.

Chairman of Desire Stephen Phipps commented "We are very pleased with this well result. The well has encountered hydrocarbons in the new Beverley and Casper South reservoirs as well as confirming hydrocarbons at the Casper and Sea Lion Main Complex levels. We are particularly excited about the downdip oil potential at both Beverley and Casper South".

8:23 13/12/2011 Sale value
Using $10 in ground price, multiplied by 100mmbbl (thanks MM) - thats $10bn

Which is £640m

640 / 342 = £1.87 per share sale value - or am I dreaming?

The next questions are:

1) When will this happen - inside 6 months?
2) Who will buy? Ideal scenario - RKH buys? By BoroMatt

Falklands oil stocks rise on latest drill success - UPDATE - Proactiveinvestors (UK)
bit.ly/tWgS78

11:43 am by Jamie Ashcroft

Both the Sea Lion and the Casper discoveries were successfully appraised, while the Beverley gas reservoir is the third discovery to be made in the Falklands.
---Adds background and additional broker comment---
Shares in Rockhopper Exploration (LON:RKH) and Desire Petroleum (LON:DES) were trading higher today as the final well in the North Falkland drill programme proved to be a success.
The well has penetrated all four reservoir targets and wireline logging indicates that these reservoirs are hydrocarbon bearing. The reservoirs were both appraisal and exploration targets.
Both the Sea Lion and the Casper discoveries were successfully appraised, while the Beverley gas reservoir is the third discovery to be made in the Falklands.
In total the well encountered 89 metres of total gross reservoir with 57 metres of net pay.
Notably Rockhopper said that the well is close to the southernmost limit of the Sea Lion field and it is at the outer edge of its former maximum case area.
Rockhopper chief executive Sam Moody said it is a fantastic result. It was the most aggressive well of the campaign and he says it will further increase the minimum estimates of oil in place for Sea Lion and Casper.
At 11:20 on AIM Rockhopper shares trading at 263.5p, up 9.4 per cent, and Desire was up 7 per cent at 26.25p.
As the shares advanced analysts also welcomed the well result.
Evolution Securities analyst Keith Morris said there is no doubt that well result should drive Rockhopper’s net asset value higher. In a note to clients today the analyst repeated a ‘buy’ recommendation and upgraded his price target from 450 to 540p a share.
According to Morris the upper resource case for the Sea Lion field should start to convince investors and, more importantly, industry farm in partners that it will be a large and economic development.
Meanwhile with a focus on Desire Seymour Pierce analyst Brendan D’Souza is a great boost. He says the result significantly increases Desire’s chances of farming out additional acreage and raising capital to ensure further drilling.
Analysts at Oriel Securities highlighted that Rockhopper shares are currently trading at a 70 per cent discount to net asset value. And the broker expects to upgrade its NAV estimates once further details on Casper and Beverley become clear.
Meanwhile Oriel said that but more clarity is needed on the resource potential within Desire’s acreage before they upgrade their view on the stock. The broker has a ‘hold’ recommendation on Desire.
By drilling this well Rockhopper is fulfilling its commitments under the farm-in deal it agreed with Desire in October. It will subsequently increase its interest in this area from 7.5 to 60 per cent upon completion.
The current appraisal and exploration drilling is now coming to an end. The remaining operations will involve drilling a sidetrack and some additional 3D seismic.
Subsequently Rockhopper is focusing on engineering and financing as it moves towards a final investment decision for a future oilfield development.
Last week, in its interim results statement, the firm revealed that it could bring in a new partner into the field development programme.
“We continue in the rare position of holding 100 per cent of what we are proving up to be a world-class asset, which makes a range of options available to us,” chairman Dr Pierre Jungels said last week.
“Having established that the field is commercial and that it will be developed, we will now look to proving how, and potentially with whom, best to achieve such a development.”
