China's largest nickel producer, the Jinchuan Group, said this week it has established an office in Johannesburg as part of efforts to increase the supply of base metals to the booming Chinese economy.
Liu Yongqin – one of two Jinchuan representatives who arrived in South Africa four months ago – said the firm was looking to buy colbalt, copper, nickel and platinum-group metals from across southern Africa, beginning in South Africa.
He said Jinchuan was talking to a number of potential suppliers in Africa, but it had not concluded any deals so far. He did not give any further details.
The company aims to produce 100 000 t of nickel in 2006, from about 70 000 t this year. – Reuters.
