Galway Company Recognised at The Irish Times InterTradeIreland Innovation Award
29 February 12
Galway company Amatech has been named winner of the Best Organisational System or Process Innovation at the annual Irish Times InterTradeIreland Innovation Awards (28th February). Amatech will now take away a €10,000 communications package in The Irish Times Innovation Magazine and an iPad with a one year subscription to The Irish Times ePaper. Amatech created a new laser technology used in electronic payment cards and other electronic documents. Through Amatech’s technique enhancements have been made in the security, reliability and longevity of passports, national ID cards and payment cards. The innovations have been introduced into the global market for electronic inlays that is undergoing exponential, long term growth.
Commenting on the win, CEO of Amatech, Dr. David Finn said: “This is very positive for our company! Most importantly it has been a huge boost for the staff as it is tangible evidence that all of their hard work and creativity over the embryonic years is paying off.”
Commenting on the awards, Liam Nellis, Chief Executive of InterTradeIreland and Chair of the Innovation awards final judging panel said: “Innovation is critical to the future of both economies on the island, North and South. Now, more than ever, businesses need an innovative and enterprising culture for commercial success and growth. The aim of the Innovation Awards is to recognise the best innovations in businesses across the island of Ireland and this year we saw a huge increase in entries which highlights that innovative thinking is alive and well in the country. Amatech is an excellent example of a company that has innovation at the very heart of their operations and I congratulate them on their success here tonight.”
This year the awards saw a positive surge in entrants with 155 companies from various industries entering the 2012 Awards. Six winners were announced at The Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin last night. Categories and winners included;
Best Organisational System or Process Innovation: Amatech (Galway)
Best Product Innovation and Overall Winner: Gabriel Scientific (Dublin)
Best Service Innovation: Tweak.com (Kerry)
Best Application of R&D and best North/South Collaboration Project: X-Bolt Orthopadics (Dublin)
Best Green-Tech Innovation: Waste Systems (Omagh)
Best Public Service Innovation: Mayo County Council – Green Way Project (Mayo)
Liam Kavanagh, Managing Director of The Irish Times added, “The quality and quantity of entries in this year's awards shows that, despite the tough economic climate, Irish entrepreneurs are still coming up with new ideas and businesses. It's really inspiring to see the enthusiasm of these businesses and the people behind them. Congratulations to all the winners here tonight.”

FORMING MICROSTRUCTURES AND ANTENNAS FOR TRANSPONDERS
Abstract
Microstructures such as connection areas, contact pads, antennas, coils, plates for capacitors and the like may be formed using nanostructures such as nanoparticles, nanowires and nanotubes. A laser may be used to assist in the process of microstructure formation, and may also be used to form other features on a substrate such as recesses or channels for receiving the microstructures. A smart mobile phone sticker (MPS) mounted to a cell phone with a self-sticking shielding element comprising a core layer having ferrite particles.
Inventors: Finn; David; (Tourmakeady, IE)
20120038445 RFID ANTENNA MODULES AND INCREASING COUPLING - A transponder with an antenna module having a chip module and an antenna; a booster antenna having a first antenna structure in the form of a flat coil having a number of turns, an outer end and an inner end, and a second antenna structure in the form of a flat coil having a number of turns, an outer end and an inner end; the inner end of the second antenna structure connected with the outer end of the first antenna structure. The antenna module may be positioned so that its antenna overlaps one of the first antenna structure or the second antenna structure. An antenna module having two additional antenna structures is disclosed. Methods of enhancing coupling are disclosed. 02-16-2012

AmaTech
Every year millions of passports and identity cards are manufactured, incorporating the latest security measures in the form of electronic inlays. These inlays enable contactless communication through radio frequency identification technology (RFID) and allow large amounts of data to be held on a microchip contained inside the card or passport.
However, current methods of creating these inlays are creating problems. “At present they force the electronic components into the paper and this creates inherent tensions,” says Dr David Finn, founder and chief executive of AmaTech. “When the paper absorbs moisture it expands and this will cause the connection between components to break.”
AmaTech has developed and patented production methods that pioneer the use of laser technology in the electronic inlay production process. ““There is no pressure or heat involved and this means components are not under tension,” says Finn.
He says the process has resulted in improvements to the quality, reliability and lifespan of an electronic inlay. In addition, the security of the electronic inlay has been increased as it is now much more difficult to locate the wire and chip in the substrate.
The development of the process was made possible by sponsorship from Enterprise Ireland of €125,000 in the form of an Innovation Partnership with the National Centre for Laser Applications in NUI Galway to complete the research needed.
Currently, the company is in the final stages of completing the machine design work needed to introduce laser technology into the electronic inlay production line in their machine engineering bureau in Germany.
“The process is about to be used in South Korean passports and the market for electronic inlays is undergoing exponential growth as it becomes the technology of choice for use in secure credential documents such as electronic passports, electronic national ID cards and electronic financial payment cards,” says Finn.
