(NYSE:AIG) are trading higher by +1.29% ahead of its quarterly earnings release. AIG, the insurance company is expected to release its quarterly results on May 5th. Wall Street Analysts consensus calls for a loss of $-0.15 a share on $14.97 billion revenue. AIG estimates have a range of $0.24 a share. The high estimate calls for loss of $-0.05 a share and the low estimate is calling for a loss of $-0.29 a share, a year ago for the quarter the company reported $1.75 a share. American International Group, Inc. (NYSE:AIG) through its subsidiaries provides a varied range of insurance and insurance-related products in the United States and abroad. The Company's main activities include both general insurance and life insurance & retirement services operations as well as financial services and asset management. AIG participates in the credit default swaps and mortgage backed securities markets.

The quarterly results suffered from devastating earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, which contributed to $1.7 billion in catastrophe losses in the quarter. The company's property-casualty arm had an operating loss of $463 million, compared with a profit of $879 million in the same period a year earlier. Still, the company said the value of policies sold in the quarter rose 6.2%.

AIG had warned investors in March about the cost of the natural disasters, which have caused insurers and reinsurers around the world to report first-quarter losses. The company is making an effort to avoid surprising investors with unwelcome news in ahead of its share sale.

AIG's life-insurance arm, SunAmerica, had operating income of $1.1 billion, unchanged from a year earlier, and AIG's financial-services operation swung to a $319 million profit from a $171 million loss a year earlier because aircraft-leasing and capital-markets operations were operating in the black. AIG's asset-management operation was also in the black.

AIG said its capital-markets operation was on track to complete the unwinding of the remaining assets of AIG Financial Products, the unit that caused the insurer to seek a government rescue in September 2008.

AIG noted that its long-term goal is to achieve annual earnings-per-share growth in the midteens on a percentage basis through 2015.

AIG muss Verlust ausweisen

New York (aktiencheck.de AG) - Der Versicherungskonzern American International Group Inc. (AIG) (Profil), der sich zu 92 Prozent in Besitz der US-Regierung befindet, meldete am Donnerstag nach US-Börsenschluss, dass er im ersten Quartal einen Verlust nach einem Vorjahresgewinn erwirtschaftet hat, was mit der Rückzahlung der Staatshilfen und Belastungen aus der verheerenden Naturkatastrophe in Japan zusammenhängt.

Der Nettoverlust nach Abzug von Minderheitsanteilen belief sich auf 543 Mio. US-Dollar bzw. 35 Cents pro Aktie, nach einem Gewinn von 359 Mio. US-Dollar bzw. 2,66 US-Dollar pro Aktie im Vorjahr. Der bereinigte Gewinn lag bei 1,30 US-Dollar pro Aktie (Vorjahr: 95 Cents pro Aktie).

Analysten waren im Vorfeld von einem Verlust von 15 Cents pro Aktie ausgegangen. Für das laufende Quartal stellen sie ein EPS-Ergebnis von 59 Cents in Aussicht.

Die Aktie von AIG beendete den Handel gestern an der NYSE bei 30,79 US-Dollar und verlor nachbörslich 1,66 Prozent auf 30,28 US-Dollar. (06.05.2011/ac/n/a)

US-Regierung erwägt Teilrückzug von AIG
Die USA türmen gigantische Schuldenberge auf. Deshalb verkauft die Regierung zunehmend Anteile an Firmen, die durch die Finanzkrise in Not geraten waren. Im Falle des verstaatlichten Versicherers ist der Zeitpunkt jedoch eher ungünstig.

Die US-Regierung will Kreisen zufolge 15 Prozent seiner Anteile am noch weitgehend verstaatlichten Versicherer AIG  verkaufen. Der Verkauf könne noch im Mai erfolgen, sagte eine mit der Sache vertraute Person der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters.

Der einst weltgrößte Versicherer war nach riskanten Wertpapiergeschäften in der Finanzkrise kollabiert und wurde durch Staatshilfen von 182 Mrd. Dollar gerettet. Der Staat hält aktuell 92 Prozent der AIG-Anteile.
Die US-Regierung ist derzeit darum bemüht, sich aus Firmen zurückzuziehen, die sie in der Krise gestützt hat. Dazu trägt auch bei, dass die Regierung wohl bald die Schuldenobergrenze reißen wird. Deshalb sollte sie zuvor so viel Geld wie möglich flüssig machen.
Sehr günstig ist der Zeitpunkt für einen Verkauf von AIG-Anteilen derzeit aber nicht: Seit Mitte Mai haben die Papiere 34 Prozent an Wert verloren. Sollte die Regierung zum Schlusskurs vom Dienstag von 29,62 Dollar verkaufen, striche sie aber immerhin etwa 1,5 Mrd. Dollar Gewinn ein.

AIG gilt als einer der Auslöser der jüngsten Finanzkrise. Der ehemals größte Versicherer der Welt hatte sich 2008 derart mit Kreditderivaten verspekuliert, dass er mit 130 Milliarden Dollar von der US-Regierung aufgefangen werden musste. Durch den Verkauf von Tochterfirmen sammelte AIG Kapital an, um die Hilfen zurückzuzahlen. Gleichzeitig zog das operative Geschäft dank der Konjunkturerholung in den USA an, so dass der Aktienkurs zwischenzeitlich auf über 51 Dollar stieg.

Doch dann entschied sich die US-Regierung ihre Vorzugsaktien, die sie für die Hilfen bekommen hatte, in Stammaktien zu wandeln. Die Folge: Die Regierung wurde zum Mehrheitseigner und hielt nun 92 Prozent der Anteile. Zudem wurde die Bewertung der Papiere der Altaktionäre dadurch dramatisch verwässert. Denn steigt die Zahl der Aktien, sinkt der Gewinn je Aktie – und damit auch die Bewertung. Dies setzte eine Abwärtsbewegung des Kurses in Gang.

Verstärkt wurden die Kursverluste durch das Erdbeben in Japan und die Naturkatastrophen in Neuseeland und Australien. Das ganze Ausmaß der Belastungen aus diesen Versicherungsfällen wurde Ende vergangener Woche sichtbar. Die AIG-Tochter Chartis meldete Belastungen in Höhe von 1,7 Milliarden Dollar aufgrund der Katastrophen. Rückzahlungen für Kredite der US-Notenbank Fed in Höhe von 3,3 Milliarden Dollar belasteten ebenfalls das Ergebnis. Operativ verbuchte AIG daher im ersten Quartal einen Verlust von rund 1,2 Milliarden Dollar.

Analysten meinen aber, dass AIG auf dem richtigen Weg ist. Cliff Gallant, Experte bei der Investmentbank KBW, rechnet spätestens nach der Aktien-Platzierung wieder mit steigenden Kursen. Die AIG-Töchter Sun America und Chartis zeigten „gutes organisches Prämienwachstum“, schrieb er in einer Studie. Fallen die Kurse weiter, könnte die Regierung mit ihrem AIG-Investment sogar in die roten Zahlen rutschen. Beobachter schätzen aber, dass sie trotzdem an der für diesen Monat geplanten Platzierung eines Teils ihrer Anteile festhalten wird. Denn der Ausstieg soll vor den Präsidentschaftswahlen 2012 abgeschlossen sein.

Banker verweisen auf den Verkauf von Anteilen am Autobauer General Motors im vergangenen Jahr, der unter dem Strich auch keinen Gewinn brachte. Der Autobauer hatte in der Krise ebenfalls Hilfen bekommen. Die Regierung hofft, die Verluste bei einer zweiten Platzierung wieder auszugleichen. Im Fall von General Motors stehen die Chancen dafür derzeit nicht gut. Der Kurs ist seit der Platzierung der Regierungsanteile weiter gefallen.
