Hatteras Financial's CEO Discusses Q1 2011 Re
Hatteras Financial Corp's CEO Discusses Q1 2011 Results
Our book value was $26.11 per share at March 31, the highest quarterly close we've had so far. This is a 5.1% increase from December 31, 2010. It's important to note that our net marks on the portfolio did increase during the quarter but showed lower on a per-share basis because of the additional shares issued.
The majority of the book value increase can be attributed to the accretion from the equity offerings. In summary, for the quarter, we generated an annualized return on average equity of 15.3% and paid a $1 dividend. Into the seption [ph], we have now distributed 15 straight dividends, representing $13.39 per share and over $485 million paid to our investors. And our annualized total returns since our IPO through March 31 is 23.3%.

Hatteras Declares First Quarter 2011 Dividend
Hatteras Financial Corp. Declares First Quarter 2011 Dividend of $1.00 Per Share
The Board of Directors of Hatteras Financial Corp. (NYSE: HTS) ("Hatteras" or the "Company") today declared a quarterly dividend of $1.00 per common share for the first quarter of 2011. The dividend will be paid on April 22, 2011, to stockholders of record on March 18, 2011, with an ex-dividend date of March 16, 2011.
"We believe market conditions remain favorable for the execution of our strategy at Hatteras," said Michael R. Hough, the company''s Chief Executive Officer. "The steep yield curve provided strong investing and hedging opportunities during the quarter as we invested the proceeds of the January capital raise. We are pleased to be able to distribute earnings of $1.00 per share which reflects both high available net interest margins and the timing of capital deployment. We think the environment in which we operate will remain on the whole favorable for an extended period but we will take the necessary steps to ensure Hatteras operates in a prudent and defensive manner."

Hatteras Financial a Stock for the Long Term?
In order to check out the valuation of Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS ) , we don't want to look at only its price-to-book ratio of 1.17. That may seem cheap, but really we don't know without looking at the ratio in historical context. In fact, it's about in-line with the company's average over its brief history since inception in 2007.
Hatteras Financial's dividend is 14.4%. As a residential real estate investment trust, the company distributes the large majority (more than 90%) of its earnings as a distribution to shareholders (hence the enormous dividend yield). Mortgage REITs such as Hatteras have done quite well in this low interest rate environment, but should short-term rates begin to rise, Hatteras might see a dip in earnings since it typically relies on short-term borrowing to make longer-term investments.
Next, we want to ensure that Hatteras Financial's stock has the ability to rise over the next five, 10, or 20 years. A company that's growing its net income has the best possible chance to see its share price rise over time. Of course, we can't predict the future, but we can look back to get an idea of how the company has performed in the past in order to try to ensure future earnings growth. Over the past three years, Hatteras Financial has grown its earnings per share by 68.4%.

$4.00 annual dividend and a hefty 14.3% yield
Hatteras is a mortgage real estate investment trust (REIT) based in North Carolina that invests in agency-backed mortgage securities. The company's CEO, Michael Hough, purchased 5,000 shares in a March secondary offering and six other insiders also purchased stock. The offering was priced at $28.50 per share and raised more than $413 million. The size of the secondary offering suggests that management sees improving investment opportunities for the company this year.
Hatteras shares trade close to book value and offer a generous $4.00 annual dividend and a hefty 14.3% yield. With that size of a payout and yields from other investments near historic lows, it's easy to understand why insiders want shares. The fact that insiders are buying may also be a positive sign that the dividend is secure.
