Black Box Corporation (NASDAQ:BBOX) came onto my radar screen last week after the company announced a large deal with a social media giant for a data center infrastructure and connectivity project. The rise on Friday after this news offset the decline seen earlier in the week when BBOX disclosed that its annual report would be late and that it only had enough funds to last to December 2018 beyond which there was a material uncertainty over its ability to to continue as a going concern. BBOX has been a long-time loser for investors, having been formerly an $80 stock back in the dot-com craze at the turn of the century. But CEO Joel Trammell seems to be making some rather bold statements to the market about the turnaround for his company and has put his money where his mouth is. Mr. Trammell took over as CEO of BBOX in November. One of his first acts as CEO was to buy BBOX on the open market; 45,000 shares at $3.95 for a total investment of $178,000. Mr. Trammell actually has his own Wikipedia entry, which is not something that every $30 million market cap company can boast. His past successes include the founding of two tech companies - NetQoS and Cache IQ - both of which were bought out. He appears to be an outspoken man, and that personality trait has certainly carried over to his role with BBOX. Signing a deal with Facebook without mentioning Facebook Upon the announcement of the deal, the tone of the news release pretty much suggested that the partner was Facebook (FB) while still trying to maintain anonymity: “ Black Box’s Commercial Services business unit was awarded this U.S.-based data center infrastructure and connectivity project following several years of successful data center work in Europe for the most well-known social media company in the world. This will be one of the largest projects ever for Black Box and promises to be only the tip of the iceberg. This first award for the almost million square foot data center is worth more than $10 million and marks the beginning of a five to ten year strategic relationship with the social media giant, which is planning a very aggressive global data center expansion program. Conversations are already underway between Black Box and the social media company to add additional site locations and data centers. The potential work could total $300 million or more for Black Box.
