NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Natural gas futures edged higher Monday after a heavy storm battered the East Coast over the weekend, leading to a last gasp of gas-fired heating demand.
The so-called shoulder season is coming on the heels of one of the mildest winters on record, which clobbered demand for natural gas and sent natural-gas inventories to record highs. Producers, meanwhile, have shown little willingness to curb production of the fuel despite the fall in prices.
Barring a summer demand surge or an output cut, inventories are on pace to hit capacity sometime this autumn, estimated by the EIA to be around 4.1 trillion cubic feet.
