Nickel spurs staking rush Editorial - Wednesday, July 04, 2007 @ 10:00 Gold, diamonds - and to a lesser extent silver - have gotten the bulk of the attention during the current mining boom that is helping to fuel the economic engine of Northeastern Ontario. And that's understandable, as Apollo Gold's Black Fox mine near Matheson; Vedron Gold's Davidson Tisdale and Fuller projects in Timmins; and De Beers' Victor diamond mine project near Attawapiskat inch toward production. A number of companies operating in the Porcupine Camp, however, are proving that it isn't just precious metals and gem stones that are adding to the lustre of the current boom. A flurry of activity in recent weeks has created a mini staking rush for base metal - mainly nickel and copper - in Timmins. Ottawa-based Melkior Resources announced on June 22 it has staked 238 claims south of Nighthawk Lake. Three days earlier, Temex Resources announced it had acquired another nickel exploration property - consisting of 107 claim units covering 4,280 acres - adjacent to the Golden Chalice Resources nickel discovery. It was Golden Chalice, of course, that got the ball rolling on May 16 when it announced "significant" results from its drill program at its Langmuir property 35 km south of Xstrata Copper's Kidd Creek metallurgical site. The Kidd Creek mine and metallurgical site are testament, of course, to just how positive an impact a base-metal project can have on an area such as Timmins. Those results included a drill hole intersection of 1.14 per cent nickel over 72.50 metres - including two separate heavily mineralized intervals of 2.23 per cent nickel, 0.22 per cent copper, 0.20 g/t platinum and 0.50 g/t palladium over 17.50 metres of drill core. In addition to the drill results reported by Golden Chalice, one of the main reasons for the intensified interest in nickel is the relatively high price it is currently fetching. It was selling for US$16.7603/pound on the London Metal Exchange Tuesday - down sharply from the US$24.70/pound it was selling for earlier this year, but still relatively high in comparison with recent years. Even with the mini staking rush we have been experiencing, Timmins residents shouldn't expect to see new nickel mines starting to sprout up overnight. Mining companies go through a lengthy checklist - including feasibility studies, environmental-impact statements and a licencing process - before they get to the stage where they decide to put a property into production. Any number of things - including a sharp decline in prices, change in the exchange rate for the Canadian dollar, or reduction in the ore base - can have a negative impact on the process. In the meantime, however, the good news is that companies such as Melkior, Temex and Golden Chalice are continuing to spend money on exploration and in the process they are helping to fuel the local economy.
