Lab says Taser guns could be harmful

NEW YORK, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Taser International Inc.'s (TASR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) stun guns may not be as safe as a recent federal study has claimed, the New York Times reported on Friday.
Taser, the maker of non-lethal weapons used by law-enforcement and private security companies, last month said a Defense Department study concluded that its guns were "generally safe and effective."
However, the Air Force Research Laboratory, which did the study, disclosed last week at a symposium that the guns may be dangerous and that more information is necessary to evaluate any risks, the newspaper said.
The guns "may cause several unintended effects, albeit with estimated low probabilities of occurrence. Available laboratory data are too limited to adequately quantify possible risks of ventricular fibrillation or seizures, particularly in susceptible populations," the laboratory said, according to the Times.
Taser stun guns use a non-lethal electric charge to disrupt muscle activity and subdue individuals.
Taser, which was not immediately available for comment, told the paper that it stood behind its earlier statement on the study.
The full results of the study have not yet been released, by either Taser or the military, the New York Times reported.
Legal pressures have been stacking up for the company. A regulatory filing earlier this month showed eight legal complaints since June, with two of the latest suits involving people injured during training exercises with Taser stun guns.
Another near-term hurdle facing Taser is a report by human rights organization Amnesty International due on Nov. 30. The report is widely expected to raise further questions about the safety of Taser stun guns. Amnesty has called for the suspension of the use of Tasers until they are proven to be safe.

Notice is hereby given that a class action lawsuit was filed in the United
States District Court for the District of Arizona on behalf of all securities
purchasers of TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq: TASR) ("TASER" or the

On January 6, 2005, just before midnight, TASER announced that it was
cooperating with an informal inquiry letter from the SEC regarding the safety of
TASER(R) products and a recent order received from Davidson's, Inc. This news
shocked the market. Shares of TASER fell $4.90 per share, or 17.74 percent, on
January 7, 2005, to close at 22.72 per share. Then on Monday, January 10, 2005,
TASER shares tumbled another $2.67 per share or 11.75 percent, to close at
$20.05 per share. On January 11, 2005, TASER released a letter to its
shareholders and customers regarding the SEC investigation and the general state
of the Company. Following the announcement, shares of TASER were down another
$5.95 per share or 29.68 percent on January 11, 2005, and last traded at $14.10
per share.

grand jury "strongly recommended" the use of Tasers by police.
The grand jury purportedly said the stun guns are a more effective way of
dealing with "confrontations and dangerous encounters with mentally ill
subjects."
The company's shares had been under heavy pressure by reports of heavy insider
selling, suspect last-minute sales contracts and its claims of safety in the
face of upwards of 80 potentially attributable or partially-attributable deaths.
Those dire events were punctuated by the company's warning that it may not meet
sales expectations due to a slow-down in orders due to the investigations and
rival products.

Der Kurs etablierte einen Aufwärtstrendkanal in dem der Anstieg leicht über das Hoch bei 32,08$ erfolgt ist. Dieser Ausbruch stellt eine Bullenfalle dar und wurde an den Vortage massiv abverkauft. Bei 13,96$ konnte sich die Aktie gestern fangen und deutet vorbörslich ein großes Gap Up an. Die Aktie dürfte im Bereich des Widerstands in Form des 38er Retracements bei 21,40$ eröffnen. Ein Island-Gap dürfte dabei geöffnet werden. Prognose: Bleibt dieses offen, bietet sich direkt die Chance einer Fortsetzung der Erholung bis in den Bereich 26,00$. Bei dieser aktuell hochvolatilen Aktie bietet sich eine Positionierung aktuell nur bei begrenztem Einsatz an. Die Taser International Inc., ein Hersteller von Betäubungspistolen, meldete am Freitag, dass er für das erste Quartal einen Umsatz unter den Analystenschätzungen erwartet, woraufhin die Aktie deutlich nachgab.
Demnach rechnet das Unternehmen für das erste Quartal mit einem Umsatz von rund 10 Mio. Dollar, während Analysten im Schnitt Erlöse in Höhe von 13,6 Mio. Dollar erwarten. Im vierten Quartal 2004 lag der Umsatz noch bei 19,2 Mio. Dollar.
Zurückgeführt wird die schwache Umsatzerwartung auf eine öffentliche Abneigung gegenüber Betäubungswaffen, nachdem diese zuletzt mit einer Reihe von tödlichen Unfällen in Verbindungen gebracht wurde.

Bisher hatte die Börsenaufsicht nur routinemäßig gegen den Hersteller von Betäubungs-Gewehren ermittelt. Darüber hinaus stehe Taser jetzt auch im Verdacht, Insider-Informationen nach außen weiter gegeben zu haben, mit deren Hilfe die Aktienkursentwicklung manipuliert worden sein könnte. Zuvor hatte die SEC lediglich einige Firmenmeldungen über die Sicherheit der Betäubungsgewehre unter die Lupe genommen. Daneben war auch eine Vertriebsvereinbarung des Unternehmens untersucht worden.
An der Nasdaq brechen Taser aktuell um 9,17 Prozent auf 6,64 Dollar ein.

Der Waffenhersteller Taser International sieht sich gemäß einer Pflichtmitteilung an die US-Börsenaufsicht aufgrund der bisherigen Nichtvorlage der Zahlen zum dritten Quartal mit einem Delisting von der US-Technologiebörse NASDAQ konfrontiert. Wie das Unternehmen am Freitag weiter mitteilte, wurde von der Nasdaq Stock Market ein Bescheid über ein bevorstehendes Delisting ausgesprochen. Nun werde versucht den Bescheid per Rechtsmittel zu bekämpfen.
