Redback Enables On-Demand Service Control for IP Video Networks; NetOp Policy Manager Dynamically Controls Bandwidth and Ensures Operational Consistency

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 2006--Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced immediate availability of NetOp(TM) Policy Manager 2.0, a policy and service management software solution for building Smart Broadband Networks for new applications such as on-demand video and broadcast IP TV services. Redback's NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 tightly integrates with the SmartEdge(R) platform to help service providers quickly deploy a wide range of revenue generating IP services in a cost-effective manner.

"Redback's industry expertise continues to drive innovative solutions like the NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 to enable advanced IP services that give service providers an edge in the increasingly competitive broadband market space," said Arpit Joshipura, vice president of product management & product marketing at Redback. "The new capabilities demonstrate Redback's continued commitment to expanding revenue opportunities for service providers and enabling advanced and compelling services for end users."

The NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 solution is a strategic tool for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Application Service Providers (ASPs) and wholesale customers to achieve their business objectives of increasing subscriber penetration, reducing provisioning costs, improving customer retention and delivering new revenue streams. Through enhanced features such as dynamic bandwidth control and operational consistency, the NetOp Policy Manager enables on-demand control for vigorous IP video network requirements.

"The new release of NetOp Policy Manager enables service providers to personalize broadband services further and to accelerate time to market for future services," said Mark Bieberich, director of communications network infrastructure at Yankee Group. "The integrated solution of NetOp Policy Manager and SmartEdge makes possible differentiated triple play services tailored to the needs of each individual customer."

Expanded IP Video Capability Through Integration With SmartEdge

The NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 tightly integrates with the Redback SmartEdge Service Gateway to assure high-quality on-demand video services by auto-adjusting bandwidth and expanding Quality of Service (QoS) functionality. From the content entry point into the network through the content delivery to the end customer, the NetOp Policy Manager intelligently identifies bandwidth and QoS requirements to ensure seamless appropriation of network resources within the Smart Broadband Network environment.

Operational Consistency With New Service Introductions

Redback's NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 provides an operationally consistent network management solution that simplifies operations without effecting backend integration. The NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 offers service providers time and download-based service capabilities that automatically adjust the bandwidth available once the subscription limit is reached to ensure that all service offering capabilities are optimized.

Enhanced Service Delivery and Customer Service

The ease-of-integration capabilities of NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 gives customer service representatives greater visibility into user accounts for network troubleshooting, cross marketing and up-selling to higher end services. Now service representatives have in-depth granular views of start and stop times of user sessions, bandwidth usage and the number of devices using the broadband connection.

New NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 Capabilities:

--  Open and flexible Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
for seamless integration and customization with CRM and call
       center systems

--  Intuitive and scalable GUI allows service providers to easily
define bandwidth and QoS profiles for tiered service offerings

--  Security lockdown features, including anti-virus, firewall,
and automated password administration, to prevent login
       attacks

Based on the industry standard RADIUS protocol, the NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 is designed to work over residential and business broadband access technologies including DSL, Wi-Fi, Cable, Leased Lines, ATM/Frame Relay and Ethernet.

The NetOp Policy Manager 2.0 product can be licensed as a run-time software with feature enhancements based on feature roadmap, or the entire source code can be licensed which gives service providers the ultimate flexibility to customize the product.

Leading Global Virtual Network Operator Chooses Redback Networks to Complement Advanced IP Services Offering; Vanco Offers Global MPLS VPN Services Using Redback Networks SmartEdge Router

Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Vanco, the leading global Virtual Network Operator (VNO) providing the design, implementation, and secure management of global corporate networks, has selected Redback's SmartEdge(R) Service Gateway to complement its MPLS VPN service offering.

Vanco will use the SmartEdge platform to provide the integration of MPLS VPN products from a wide range of carriers in multiple locations, resulting in a seamless multi-carrier MPLS product with class of service remarking, any-to-any functionality and end to end service level agreements for Vanco's customers.

"We needed a platform that was both scalable and reliable," said John Locke, chief technology officer at Vanco. "The SmartEdge platform clearly demonstrated its scalability during the extensive testing process."

"Redback has worked with customers around the world to develop the SmartEdge platform's MPLS VPN capabilities," said Magnus Almquist, vice president of operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Redback Networks. "Working with our top tier customer base, we have created a product portfolio that combines the latest features without sacrificing performance and resiliency. The SmartEdge product line was purpose-built for the rigorous demands of highly available, resilient, and secure carrier networks. Its BGP scalability and virtual routing capability allowed Vanco to significantly reduce the number of managed elements in their network and thereby simplify their network operations."

The SmartEdge Router provides industry-leading density and performance with 480 line-rate Gigabit Ethernet ports in a standard 7 foot rack. The PPA2 Broadband IP Engine can forward 216 million packets per second and support 2.5 million routes and 3,000 virtual routers. The combination of resiliency and performance scales the network both technically and operationally.

XTS Telecom's new high-speed network is based on WiMAX wireless access technology and will support advanced broadband services. The services will be available across the French islands of Reunion, Martinique, and Guadeloupe where XTS plans to use the Redback SmartEdge Service Gateway systems' carrier class Ethernet capabilities to connect to the WiMAX base stations. To enable XTS Telecom to offer highly personalized services including VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), the SmartEdge Service Gateway integrates the functions of subscriber management, carrier class Ethernet aggregation and edge routing.

"XTS Telecom has taken a truly next-generation approach to offering broadband services to their subscribers," said Magnus Almquist, Redback's vice president of sales and operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "The exclusive use of WiMAX technology for broadband access combined with the performance, reliability, and flexibility of the SmartEdge portfolio provides a powerful, reliable and cost efficient broadband infrastructure to deliver broadband services to existing and new customers."

"Redback has an outstanding track record of delivering proven IP broadband solutions," said Olivier Caron, CTO of XTS Telecom. "They have demonstrated a thorough understanding of our broadband requirements, and in the SmartEdge product family, they have a portfolio that supports our immediate needs as well as our plans for future service deployments."

Redback Networks addressed the requirements of XTS Telecom's broadband network in conjunction with Telindus, a Redback Premier Partner.

About SmartEdge Product Family

Redback's SmartEdge family of products is designed to deliver advanced IP services and personalize IP broadband through subscriber management with the highest degree of availability, scalability, and flexibility. The SmartEdge platform is available as an Ethernet aggregator, edge router or Service Gateway. The SmartEdge Service Gateway combines the functionality of carrier class Ethernet aggregation, edge routing and advanced subscriber management to enable service providers to simplify its IP broadband aggregation network. By creating a single service control point, the SmartEdge Service Gateway helps service providers to deliver current and future IP broadband services in a granular and personalized fashion. As a router, the SmartEdge platform is a third-generation edge router for the aggregation of leased lines, ATM and Frame Relay and the delivery of MPLS VPN services.

for Next-Generation Broadband Network in Guangdong Province; Guangdong Telecom, China Telecom's Largest Subsidiary to Deploy SmartEdge Routers to Support Broadband Growth and New Services!

24.05.2006 13:45:00 (BUSINESS WIRE)

Redback Networks Inc.  (Nasdaq:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Guangdong Telecom, the largest subsidiary of China Telecom Group, has selected Redback's SmartEdge(R) family of routers to expand their consumer and business broadband network for next generation data, voice and video offerings including IP television (IPTV).

Guangdong Telecom plans to use Redback's SmartEdge routers to service-enable its existing xDSL and Ethernet access networks. By providing a centralized service control point, Guangdong Telecom is able to offer the same advanced next generation services to all their customers regardless of the access technology being used. In addition, the innovative service architecture is expected to reduce operations expenses by simplifying the network architecture and consolidating both business and consumer services onto a single network.

SmartEdge routers are expected to be deployed at the network edge, aggregating all the broadband service traffic and directly connecting to the core network. In addition to offering new consumer broadband services such as tiered bandwidth, Guangdong Telecom plans to leverage the edge routing capabilities of the SmartEdge routers in the future for business-class VPN services using advanced Hierarchical Quality of Service (HQoS) and standards-based MPLS.

"SmartEdge routers are designed to simplify a service provider's operations by enabling a converged IP network to deliver video, voice and data services, while providing industry leading reliability and service availability," said Simon Williams, vice president of sales and operations for the Asia Pacific region at Redback. "Redback has purpose-built the platform to deliver high bandwidth, next generation services, and we are excited to be working with a visionary service provider, such as Guangdong Telecom, to help deliver a new era of triple play services to some of the most advanced broadband markets in China."

Guangdong Telecom currently serves over three million subscribers across the province and the SmartEdge routers will be deployed in the top three cities, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan.

Redback Networks Inc.  (NASDAQ:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation IP networking systems, today announced that Bezeq, the national incumbent telecommunications provider of Israel, has selected Redback's SmartEdge(R) Multi-Service Edge Router as the foundation for its next generation broadband IP network. According to Point-Topic, Israel had 800,000 residential customers using high-speed ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop) to access the Internet at the end of 2005. Point-Topic also reports that ADSL technology accounts for over 65% of the broadband access market in Israel, which is growing at almost 30% per year. Bezeq chose the SmartEdge router to help it address this growing market along multiple dimensions such as increased bandwidth, service variety and multiple access devices.

"Strong broadband adoption in the Israeli market combined with an upcoming demand for next generation IP services such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) has created the need for increased capacity, scalable multicast and quality of service within the broadband network infrastructure," said Eve Griliches, research manager at IDC. "Knowing the thoroughness of Bezeq's selection and testing process, the selection of Redback's SmartEdge system demonstrates it is one of the major contenders in the Multi-Service Edge Router market, integrating carrier class edge routing with scalable Ethernet aggregation and strong subscriber management functions."

"We are pleased to extend our relationship with our long-standing customer Bezeq together with our loyal partner Taldor Communications," said Magnus Almquist, vice president of operations for Redback in Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Redback's SmartEdge and NetOp family of products will enable Bezeq to deliver the full range of IP based services on a personalized basis to residential and business customers on an integrated platform."

About Bezeq

Bezeq is Israel's national telecommunications provider. Established in 1984, the company has led Israel into the new era of communications, based on the most advanced technologies and services. Bezeq and its subsidiaries offer the full range of telecommunication services including domestic, international and cellular phone services; Internet, ADSL, and other data communications; leased lines, and corporate networks.

Bezeq aims to maintain its position as the #1 communications group in Israel, leading in both infrastructure and services, providing managed solutions to business customers, broadband and interactive services to consumers, as well as next generation mobile and wholesale network services. The company has adopted a strategy of growth and defense in an era of new technologies, emerging business possibilities, and intensified competition in the wake of government liberalization and deregulation. The strategy also includes strengthening group awareness so that Bezeq is seen as a one-stop-shop for domestic, cellular, international, satellite and Internet solutions.

Unwired plans to expand the capacity of its wireless broadband network and improve the network’s reliability by leveraging the MPLS routing and subscriber management capabilities of the SmartEdge routers.

“With the SmartEdge routers, we are acquiring significant routing capabilities while increasing service capabilities and subscriber control,” said Eric Hamilton, chief technical officer at Unwired. “The combination of routing and subscriber management should enable us to provide better network control as well as provide value added services to reduce the time to market for future mobile broadband services.”

Unwired is one of the most innovative service providers in Australia and holds spectrum licences to cover approximately 65% of the Australian population across major population centres. The company was awarded Carrier of the Year in 2005 by the Australian Telecommunications User Group (ATUG), Australia’s most prestigious telecommunications award.

Telefonica Del Sur Expands Next Generation Network with Redback Networks' SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Router -
Back

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 26, 2006 – Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Telefonica del Sur (Telsur), the incumbent carrier in Chile’s southern region, has chosen Redback’s SmartEdge® Multi-Service Edge Router to expand its next generation network and power its business and residential services. Already a Redback customer for five years, Telsur plans to leverage the combination of edge routing, Ethernet aggregation and subscriber management to simplify their network, to expand capacity, and to decrease the time to market for new services. The upgraded Smart Broadband Network is designed to reduce capital and operational expenses.

“We needed a proven platform that could scale our next generation network and provide a smooth migration from ATM to Ethernet transport and advanced IP services,” said Iñaki Larraza, director of operations at Telsur. “The combination of edge routing and subscriber management should enable us to provide value-added services such as Self Enrollment, Tiered Bandwidth, and future services such as IPTV and fixed mobile convergence.”

According to Point-Topic, Chile is one of the top countries in broadband penetration in Latin America. With a subscriber growth rate of over 100% per year, ADSL has surpassed cable to become the leading broadband access technology in Chile during 2004. Large investments in telecommunications, a favorable regulatory environment, and e-government initiatives were all factors in Chile’s broadband growth.

“We're proud to have Telefonica del Sur as they join a larger population of Redback customers in Latin America. Redback is responding to the demand in Latin America by increasing sales and support throughout the region,” said John Spiliotis, vice president sales and operations for the Americas at Redback. “We look forward to mutual success for Telefonica del Sur and Redback as we address the demand for broadband services in Latin America.” The Smart Broadband Network provides a single, converged IP network infrastructure that can deliver voice, video and data services with a simplified architecture that reduces both capital and operational expenditures. A recent study by Yankee Group found that deploying a product with capabilities similar to the SmartEdge multi-service edge routers can reduce the total cost of ownership of a next generation network by over 20%, including the reduction of operations expense by over 50%.

About Telsur

Telefonica del Sur is a telecommunications leader in Chile, with coverage in various regions. With a solid position in the fixed-line market, the company also offers dial-up and broadband Internet services, video security monitoring, alarms and entry access controls, and national and international long distance, which are all available through 121 subsidiaries of Telefonica del Sur. In addition, Blue Two Chile, which is a subsidiary of Telefonica del Sur, is developing the implementation of the first public network with access to wireless broadband Internet access through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology.

Kazakhtelecom Deploys Redback’s SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Router for Broadband Business Services - SmartEdge to Support Rapid IP Service Expansion in Kazakhstan
Back

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 27, 2006 – Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Kazakhtelecom, the incumbent fixed-line operator in Kazakhstan, has deployed Redback‘s SmartEdge® Multi-Service Edge Routers to expand network capacity to deliver business and residential services on a converged IP network.

Due to the rapid adoption of its broadband services, Kazakhtelecom is expanding the capacity and increasing the scalability of their network. The majority of Kazakhtelecom’s current customers are businesses. However, with the increase in the adoption of consumer broadband services, the company needed to expand capacity and scalability. The upgraded network is designed to offer residential broadband as well as business services such as ATM, leased line, and Ethernet services. MPLS virtual private networks as well as other value-added services are also expected to be offered over the same network.

“Kazakhstan has a burgeoning economy with a focus on high-tech and next-generation telecommunications services,” said Dr. Ray Mota, chief strategist of Synergy Research Group. “Our research shows that Redback’s SmartEdge family of multi-service edge routers is differentiated by its ability to consolidate multiple IP services onto a single network,” he continues. “With over 150 service provider customers today, the SmartEdge router has proven to be flexible, scalable and reliable, enabling service providers to lay the foundation for rapid and cost-effective delivery of next-generation business and consumer services, including IPTV, on-line gaming, virtual private networks and Voice over IP.”

Redback’s SmartEdge family of multi-service edge routers provides carrier-class routing as well as advanced subscriber management, creating a converged IP network that simplifies overall network operations and traffic control for Kazakhtelecom. Kazakhtelecom also expects to take advantage of the SmartEdge routers’ hierarchical quality of service (QoS) capabilities to offer multiple levels of services to its corporate clients and deploy new next-generation broadband services to residential customers in the future.

“With the power of our SmartEdge platform, we are enabling service providers like Kazakhtelecom to deliver high-speed, high-performance IP-based broadband services to customers who are demanding next-generation entertainment and communications,” said Magnus Almquist, vice president of sales and operations for EMEA at Redback. “As Kazakhtelecom is already providing most of the residential telephony services in Kazakhstan, the SmartEdge deployment should help them converge their multiple networks and simplify operations.”

Redback Networks erklimmt Rang Zwei im Bereich...

30.08.06 11:31
... Breitband-Internet!!!

29.08.2006 22:35:00 (BUSINESS WIRE)

edback Networks Inc.  (Nasdaq:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, has become the number two market leader in broadband internet service, passing Juniper Networks for the first time, according to a new report by Infonetics, a major industry research firm in Campbell, CA.

In its second quarter report for 2006, Infonetics reported that Redback's market share increased nine percentage points to 20 percent, rising to the second spot in the overall market. In the same report, Juniper's market share dropped 18 points to 19 percent overall, dropping to the third spot. Cisco Systems' market share dropped nine points to 36 percent, the top spot in the Infonetics report. The report compared results from second quarter of 2006 to the second quarter of 2005. For more details on this report, see www.infonetics.com.

"One of the three pillars for 'triple-play' services is broadband internet delivery. Redback is rising in the market place because it sees a future of fewer networks and more services, delivering a combination of high-speed Internet, VoIP and video-on-demand services," said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research, a major research firm in Campbell, CA.

"We believe this market study is an important validation for Redback's gains in the broader market category of multi-service routing," said Marco Wanders, chief marketing officer at Redback Networks. "On a worldwide basis, broadband carriers are moving rapidly toward a single integrated IP network for high-speed data, voice and video services. Carriers want to reduce the number of networks they are building and simplify their operations. Network economics no longer support new overlay networks for IP-based, triple-play services. Redback's SmartEdge(R) multi-service edge router helps carriers deliver multiple services over a single, integrated IP network."

Wanders said multi-service routing will eventually overtake other categories of single-service routing. "We see a future of fewer networks and more broadband services," said Wanders. "Over time, we believe that networks will get smarter, and all communications services will be managed in harmony under a single IP infrastructure."

Eleven of the top 20 DSL carriers worldwide deploy Redback's SmartEdge(R) multi-service edge router to deliver various broadband services to tens of millions of business and residential customers worldwide. These customers include British Telecom, Belgacom, Bell South, China Telecom, China Netcom, Chungwha Telecom, France Telecom and Turk Telecom, among others.

Redback Networks also added 18 new customers in the third quarter for its SmartEdge(R) family of multi-service edge routers, including a top 20 carrier worldwide. "On a worldwide basis, Redback continues to drive the wire-line carrier market in the deployment of triple-play networks," said Kevin DeNuccio, president and chief executive officer, Redback Networks. "Broadband networks are becoming more video-centric and we believe Redback and SmartEdge technology are at the center of a paradigm shift in network routing to multi-service broadband networks."

"We believe up to 2 billion wireless and wire-line customers will be upgraded to new broadband networks from 250 million broadband users today," said DeNuccio. "This network upgrade is up to ten times larger than the last Internet build-out. This trend reinforces our vision that a single broadband network will unify communication and entertainment services over time. In short, the network is shaping up to be the next mass medium."

GAAP net loss for the third quarter of 2006 was $2.4 million or $(0.03) per share attributable to common stockholders compared to a GAAP net loss of $8.4 million or $(0.15) per share in the third quarter of 2005.

For comparative purposes, GAAP pre-tax income excluding stock-based compensation for the third quarter of 2006 was $6.4 million, compared with a GAAP pre-tax loss excluding stock-based compensation of $7.3 million for the third quarter of 2005.

04.12.2006 09:00:00 (BUSINESS WIRE)

Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), a leading provider of multi-service edge routers for next generation IP networks, today announced that Opal Telecom, a subsidiary of The Carphone Warehouse (CPW), has chosen the SmartEdge(R) family of multi-service edge routers to help deliver the TalkTalk free broadband service for up to two million customers in the United Kingdom (U.K.).

TalkTalk is a communications company from The Carphone Warehouse and provides a combination of free broadband (up to 8 Mbps) and unlimited fixed-line phone calls. In October 2006, The Carphone Warehouse announced plans to acquire AOL UK's broadband operations, and the deal is expected to close in early 2007. The acquisition will make The Carphone Warehouse the third largest broadband provider in the U.K., with almost two million customers.

"Offering triple-play services is a compelling value for Internet users and has transformed the broadband market," said Magnus Almquist, vice president of sales & operations for Redback in Europe, Middle East and Africa. "It powerfully demonstrates that all communications can be delivered over a single broadband infrastructure and that over time carriers can use the power of Internet technology to converge communications and entertainment services. We are very pleased to be working with The Carphone Warehouse on this opportunity."

Clive Dorsman, chief technical officer of Opal Telecom, said: "Our strategy is to move quickly when we see new market opportunities. Being able to offer free broadband as part of a calling package provides The Carphone Warehouse with an opportunity to attract new customers, provide even better value to existing ones, whilst using the very profitable integrated service with a flexible IP infrastructure from Redback."

Redback's SmartEdge multi-service edge routers give network operators a graceful migration path to triple-play services, advanced business services such as unified communications and mobility services such as WiFi, WiMAX and mobile broadband networks. Redback uses a single system to manage data, voice and video services over next generation broadband networks. The platform is attractive to carriers because Redback uses a modular operating system and programmable processors that were specifically designed to manage different kinds of broadband IP services simultaneously. This flexible platform for multi-service networks give carriers higher levels of service consolidation, system availability, service scalability, and network mobility.

Twelve of the top 20 telephone carriers worldwide use SmartEdge routers for broadband, phone and TV services. Top carriers using SmartEdge include Belgacom, BellSouth, China Telecom, China Netcom, Chungwha Telecom (Taiwan), eAccess (Japan) France Telecom, Korea Telecom and Turk Telecom.
