Company Announcement: 10 February 2003
Magna Pacific (Holdings) Limited on Monday said exponential growth in the DVD market and a strong lineup of movie titles had
propelled the company's unaudited half year net profit before tax to more than $1.16 million, up more than 100 percent on the same
period last year ($583,000).
Managing Director Allan Radley said the result was struck on unaudited revenue of over $14 million, a 100 percent improvement on the
previous corresponding period of $6.9 million.
Mr Radley said box office movies such as Rabbit-Proof Fence and Amelie, as well as children's franchise series Zoids and The
Crocodile Hunter had made a significant contribution to the result.
However, he said the growth engine for the company in the medium term was in Magna Pacific's current library of 3000 movies and
documentaries, most of which would be converted from VHS to DVD format.
"We are seeing growth from our new cinema releases, our new franchise products and through our back catalogue of titles in which we
already enjoy strong retail support," he said.
"People want their classic movies on the DVD format because it doesn't deteriorate, so the conversion of our extensive VHS library
into DVDs will be one of the foundations for our revenue growth in the future."
He said this year Magna Pacific would bring out 500 new titles on DVD, including both newly acquired titles and titles sourced from
the company's existing library, compared to 140 released last year.
"We already own the rights to many of these titles so the beauty of it is that we will get these additional DVDs into the market,
earning us revenue, for minimal outlay," he said.
Mr Radley said independent figures on DVD retail sales in Australia showed the industry had grown by 75 percent in the 2002 calendar
year with further strong growth expected.
"The DVD industry is really only three years old in Australia and Magna Pacific is well positioned to take advantage of any future
growth in the industry," he said.
"Magna Pacific is well established and we are the company to be in to capture the exposure to this DVD market which is real and
tangible and growing strongly.
Mr Radley said Magna Pacific had built up extensive relationships with more than 6000 retail outlets including stores such as
K-Mart, ABC, Big W and Video Ezy.
"We have built up our retail space in these stores and grown our share of the overall retail market to five percent and the outlook
is that this will trend will continue," he said.
"DVD players were one of the hottest selling items at Christmas and people have continued to buy more DVD movies, so we are looking
at a lift in sales which will follow through to the end of the year," he said.
Mr Radley said Magna Pacific was also on the look out for acquisitions with synergies, with the company carrying over $6 million in
cash.
"We are looking closely at some opportunities which may have a good fit into our existing DVD business, and will allow us to
increase shareholder value," he said.
