Oliver Stone's Alexander Starts Shooting Tomorrow Source: Variety Sunday, September 21, 2003
Variety has a big article on writer/director Oliver Stone's Alexander which starts shooting on Monday. The film stars Colin Farrell, Anthony Hopkins, Val Kilmer and Angelina Jolie. Here's a clip which does include spoilers if you're not familiar with the history of Alexander the Great.
When Oliver Stone begins filming "Alexander the Great" Sept. 22 in Morocco, he is going right into battle. On his first day of lensing, he'll be directing a cast of 800 to re-enact the Battle of Guagamela. "I figured that killing somebody right away is a good way to break the ice," Stone says.
That victory in 331 B.C., by which Alexander and his troops ended Persian rule in Asia, was a turning point in ancient history. The scene will mark a turning point for Stone and his backer, Intermedia.
The pic will be the most expensive European film ever made -- and the future of Intermedia rests on the outcome.
Stone and Intermedia have beaten the odds to mount a film whose $150 million onscreen budget rises to $200 million once all financing costs are included.
After Morocco, they'll move to London's Pinewood Studios on Nov. 10, then head to Thailand in January. Stone wraps in January, and Warners plans to have the film in U.S. theaters by Thanksgiving 2004.
