SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Microsoft and Commerce One announced that they will expand their partnership to provide business-to-business software and services worldwide.
The two companies will merge Microsoft's Net Platform with Commerce One's e-marketplace infrastructure, in an attempt to deliver improved B-to-B abilities.
The companies cited integration of technologies and collaboration on XML standards as key to the success of the joint venture.
"This brings a ton to Commerce One," said Commerce One chief strategy officer Chuck Duchess, referring to the international opportunities that come along with the Microsoft name and global outreach.
Duchess said that the agreement should generate a "tremendous amount of revenue," and added the company should see results within the quarter.
Commerce One (CMRC: news, msgs) expects to generate more income primarily through licensing its software and the recurring profits generated through partner companies utilizing its service. The company also expects to reap smaller benefits through increased professional services.
Microsoft (MSFT: news, msgs) will supply the software infrastructure and also make its consulting services available.
Scott Garvey, Microsoft director of industry solutions, said that Commerce One was the secure choice for an extended partnership, rather than another company or alternatively choosing to develop their own B-to-B services.
"The Microsoft business model has always been around partners," said Garvey. "We expect a lot of business in the pipeline. The deal lowers the barriers to company's making a decision, lowers the risk. We expect almost tomorrow for customers to feel very comfortable with the alliance"
As part of the expanded arrangement, the two companies will establish a joint development lab in Redmond, Wash. for testing and development.
Garvey emphasized that the lab was to work on future, long-term products.
Also on Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a Microsoft request by refusing to hear the company's antitrust case and sending it to a federal appeals court instead. See full story.
Microsoft shares gained $1.44 to close Tuesday at $62.69. Commerce One shares dropped $5.63 to end at $75.13.
