After Tuesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Tuesday, it was a mixed close for the markets as interest rate concerns tempered gains in new home construction. The Commerce Department attributed dry weather to an unexpected increase of 5% in April new home construction. The figure had previously decreased for three consecutive months due to rising mortgage rates. Investors are waiting for the Federal Reserve's latest statement next week after its meeting on inflation and economic growth. Gold prices recovered an earlier dip to reach about $580 per ounce. A barrel of light crude dropped 4 cents to settle at $68.94. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 32.73, or 0.3 percent, to 10,974.84. The Nasdaq composite index lost 3.36, or 0.16 percent, to 2,107.06. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.02 to 1,240.12. The Russell 2000 index fell 3.26, or 0.48 percent, to 677.50.
