HSI End-2008 Target At 28000, H-Shrs At 15300 -CS
Credit Suisse introduces its 2008 year-end target for HSI at 28000, which implies 18.4X 2008 P/E, 15.8X 2009 P/E; also tips H-Shares Index at 15300 by end-2008, translates to 16.5X 2008 P/E, 14.2X 2009 P/E. 'Markets could overshoot due to lower interest rates and still overly optimistic earnings estimates,' it says. Adds its target for MSCI Hong Kong at 12400.

Credit Suisse sets 2008 year-end target for Shanghai A share Index at 2710, vs last at 3680. Forecast implies 15.8X 2008 PE, 13.3X 2009 PE. Also tips MSCI China index 1.1% lower at 75.0 by end 2008; translates into 16.5X 2008 PE, 14.1X 2009 PE. "We believe that current estimates (on which our model is based) for the mainland market are too optimistic; 4% lower earnings growth per year from 2008 to 2010 could bring 10% more downside.

The U.S. dollar's broad weakness against most major global currencies overnight, especially the euro, pushed China's yuan to a record high against the dollar for the fourth consecutive session Thursday. The yuan's recent steady rise has increased speculation the People's Bank of China might be shifting its foreign exchange policy to allow a more rapid rise of the yuan, a Shanghai-based trader at an Asian bank said. If so, the dollar could test the psychological level of CNY6.90 within the next month, the trader added.
