Lucent Denies Report of 15,000 Job Cuts
August 23, 2002 11:51:00 AM ET
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) is planning another round of job cuts that could reduce the telecommunications equipment maker's work force by as much as 15,000 jobs, or 33 percent below previous targets, a financial news Web site said on Friday, but Lucent denied the report.
The Murray Hill, New Jersey-based company's Chief Executive Patricia Russo is pushing another round of restructuring as it pushes to return to profits in a market where large telephone companies are still curtailing spending, TheStreet.com said, citing people close to the company.
Lucent is preparing to drop product lines and cut its total work force, eventually bringing employment to between 30,000 and 35,000 people, the Web site said.
Lucent spokeswoman Michelle Davidson denied the report.
``Our current plans get us to about 45,000 employees by the end of the calendar year,'' she said. ``To speculate that we're going to cut another 30 percent is ludicrous.''
Last month, Lucent said it would cut its work force to about 45,000 by the end of the year and Russo told Reuters then that more cuts were likely but would not say how many. Lucent has said any additional actions would likely be identified during its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings announcement in October.
Many analysts said previously that the company would need to cut its work force below 40,000 people. Lucent employed 106,000 people in January 2001, when it launched its restructuring.
Lucent's stock was off 5 cents, or 3.2 percent, at $1.53 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
TheStreet.com said new job cuts could result in a potential violation of Lucent's loan covenants if it took a large restructuring charge. It would likely need to restructure its loans to allow more cuts.
Lucent's annual sales will likely drop to between $9 billion and $11 billion, or $2.5 billion a quarter, TheStreet.com said, citing the sources. For the company's most recent quarter, it reported sales of almost $3 billion and said it was targeting a break-even level at below $3.5 billion.
TheStreet.com said a number of prized projects and divisions are expected to feel the pinch, including parts of its fabled Bell Labs, some of its highly engineered optical efforts including its LambdaRouter switch and certain areas of data communications and network access lines.
