TREVOSE, Pa., Feb 2, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- WorldGate Communications Inc. (WGAT) announced today that the Company has further demonstrated its ability to deliver high quality video telephony over the public Internet anywhere in the world with broadband Internet access. Using the Company's Ojo video phone, which incorporates WorldGate's breakthrough H.264 based video processing technology, the Company demonstrated that the reach of the Ojo technology extends worldwide by making a number of video calls between its headquarters in suburban Philadelphia and the offices of Mototech Inc., its design and manufacturing partner, in Taipei, Taiwan. As previously shown with calls within the United States, these international calls continued to provide excellent, well-synchronized, voice and video communications. The Company believes this is the first successful intercontinental demonstration of H.264 based technology over the public Internet with a personal video phone.
"It is exciting to think that our technology provides an opportunity to allow anyone in the world with broadband access to communicate, not only with voice, but with true-to-life images," said Hal Krisbergh, WorldGate's Founder, Chairman and CEO. Mr. Krisbergh continued, "The day has arrived where families and friends, separated by great distances around the globe, are able to see one another. This technological milestone extends Ojo's reach and potential to the current 100 million worldwide broadband users."
Using a data rate of 150kbps, WorldGate made the video calls with full motion video displayed at 30 frames per second; similar to that of broadcast TV. WorldGate believes that its Ojo technology has overcome prior obstacles to long distance true-to-life video calls such as delays and synchronized voice and video.
K.Y. Chou, President of Mototech, said, "WorldGate and Mototech's teams have worked collaboratively to achieve this historic technological success and we are proud of our contribution to the Ojo product. It was gratifying to have those who have worked so hard together finally see one another across the world on the Ojo video phone."
WorldGate plans to begin trials of the Ojo video phone with several cable and DSL operators around the world over the next few months and expects the product to be commercially available in the third quarter of this year.
