ERBITUX is an investigational monoclonal antibody designed to target and block the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), which is expressed on the surface of certain cancer cells in multiple tumor types. ERBITUX binds to EGFR and prevents natural ligands called growth factors from binding to the receptor and inducing phosphorylation, i.e., activation of signaling to the tumor. Studies of ERBITUX have demonstrated its biologic activity in a number of tumor types, including colon (in combination and as a single-agent), pancreatic, head and neck, and non-small cell lung cancer. Expression of EGFR has been correlated with poor patient prognosis, decreased survival and/or increased metastasis. Therefore, therapies directed at preventing the function of these receptors should be useful cancer treatments. The most common drug-related adverse events reported in clinical trials of ERBITUX has been an acne-like rash. Severe allergic reactions may occur in a small percentage of patients.

In July 2002, the FDA approved the use of ERBITUX manufactured at ImClone Systems' new commercial manufacturing facility for use in clinical studies.
