Barkindo: OPEC will hold talks with shale producers
Futures of crude kept sliding on Monday after reaching a two-month high, as investors were skimming profit following a rise of West Texas Intermediate past the $50 mark. Oil was unfazed after the Wall Street Journal quoted Mohammed Barkindo, secretary general of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, as saying the cartel will maintain dialogue with competitors from the shale industry. The article notes the first meetings were held in Houston, Texas, in March.
OPEC and the group of other major exporters led by Russia are trying to bolster global prices of the benchmark energy commodity with exploitation caps introduced in January and planned to be held through next March. Furthermore, Barkindo warned Iraq signaled it aims to hold its part of the bargain and drill no more than 210,000 barrels per day.
