The official rules and regulations of the 1st Extreme Ironing World Championships
by the
GEIS (German Extreme Ironing Section)
Note
Extreme Ironing is an extreme sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt. There are no limits to extreme ironing and everybody can call on their own creativity, bravery and ironing ability to iron wherever and whatever they like. Extreme Iron-ing requires physical fitness, skill, creativity and of course ironing knowledge.
We've decided to hold a World Championships to find out who's the best of the best and able to take ironing to the edge. By definition, having a competition means having some rules, so here they are:
Rules & Regulations
§ 1 THE SPORT
§ 1.1 Objectives
The objective of Extreme Ironing is to take ironing to the edge by demonstrating a spectacular or creative ironing style, whilst taking the creases out of your clothes.
§ 1.2 Types of games
Every competitor has to iron alone except in the freestyle area (see below).
§ 1.3 Scoring
There are three components for scoring:
• Extreme and creative ironing style
• Extreme well pressed and clean clothes
• Extreme short time
For your extreme style you can get up to 60 points at each station (5x60).
For your well pressed clothes you can get up to 40 points at each station
(5x60).
For your needed time you can get up to 100 points
The Extreme Ironist with the most points is the winner.
The pressed clothes have the same numbers as the starting number of each competitor and should be hung on a washing line next to the others after the ironing is completed for scoring. The points for the pressed clothes are then given following comparison with the clothes from the other competitors.
National teams
There will be a scoring for each single Extreme Ironist and there will be a national team scoring.
A national team consists three competitors. One nation can have as many teams as they want. The name of the competitors for each team must be given to the official World Championships Committee at least two days before the beginning of the competition.
The national team scoring will be a result from the single scoring from every team member.
§ 2 IRONING STATIONS
The Competition offers the most common Extreme Ironing scenarios. There are five stations with different challenges for each Extreme Ironist. You have to iron all of the stations.
§ 2.1 Rocky style
You have to iron on a rocky slope. How steep and rocky it is depends on the location.
§ 2.2 Water style
You have to iron in or on the water. It is important that water is involved in this station. How this will be possible also depends on the local landscape.
§ 2.3 Forrest style
The forrest station has trees, bushes and all that a woodland can offer for an Extreme Ironist. You can iron under or in a tree, in the bushes etc.
§ 2.4 Urban style
The urban station should represent Extreme Ironing in a city. For example, in or on a (stationary) car, in front of a house or in shop windows.
§ 2.5 Freestyle
At the freestyle area you can do whatever you want. Here is the only place where you can iron with other ironists. You can use ironists or friends for help but you have to inform the official committee if you want to get help from friends who are also competitors. This is to ensure ac-curate scoring. Here you can also use more than one iron at once.
§ 3 EQUIPMENT
In general, there are no limitations for the equipment you can use. The competitors have to make sure that themselves and others won't become injured using their equipment.
§ 3.1 Iron
At the World Championships every ironist must use the official World Championships iron for an accurate comparison of extreme ironing performances. The iron will be provided by the World Championships Committee. For the safety of all competitors and for the protection of the environment, the iron will be heated without electricity. The irons will use alternative energy sources.
§ 3.2 Board
There are no limitations for the boards apart from safety. The board can be any shape or size. It can be curved or flat and it can be made out of any materials. You have to bring boards with you. There will be no ironing without a board.
§ 3.3 Protections
Each Competitor has the responsibility of protecting themselves. Competitors are responsible for their own safety, and there is no limitation for using protective clothing or equipment..
If the environment is step and rocky, you have to use ropes and, if it is necessary, wear helmets. You also have to protect you against burns.
§ 4 TEXTILE
At every station the competitor has to iron a different textile. The official Extreme Ironing World Championships Committee will provide the textiles at the stations. The textile which the competitor have to iron will have the same number as the starting number. The competitors should iron the textile as best as they can. All creases need to be removed and it should be clean and intact after the ironing.
There are following textiles to iron at the World Championships*:
• Tablecloth
• Handkerchiefs
• T-shirt
• (Sport-)Trousers
• Shirt
*Choice of textiles are subject to change before the World Championships.
EXKURS I:
ESO-Ironing
Eso-Ironing is a new trendy and inspirational style of the Extreme-Ironing-Movement, getting more fans into it every day.
Based on the ancient and powerful discipline of Yoga this method of Extreme-Ironing involves synchronising the breath with progressive series of postures while ironing. The external heat stimulates the production of intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, a calm mind and tidy clothes.
A deeper experience of the Self becomes possible through consistent practice.
EXKURS II:
History
1997: Steam and Spray started with Extreme Ironing
Phil, from the boring town of Leicester, in England, started Extreme Ironing in 1997 with his flat mate Paul, also known as "Spray".
"When I returned home after a long day in the knitwear factory, the last thing I wanted to do was start on a pile of ironing. The sun was shining and I preferred the idea of an evening out pursuing my hobby of rock climbing. So I decided to combine the two activities."
Steam (Founder of the Extreme Ironing Movement)
After perfecting the manoeuvres in their back garden, Steam and Spray set off around Britain to try out their new found ironing skills in various extreme locations, including mountains, rivers and cliffs.
End of 1999: Hot Crease met Steam during a stay in New Zealand
"Once I met Phil in New Zealand and my girlfriend told me about him: 'He's doing a great new fun sport and he looks always soooo smart !' Of course I was a bit jealous but I was also quite curious about this mysterious new sport. So I asked: 'What kind of sport is it and what's the secret that all girls like your style and why are you so relaxed?' The only answer he gave me was: 'Just try Extreme Ironing!' I tried it immediately and it was a fantastic feeling. You can feel the heat and the enormous pressure. After my first extreme ironing experience I felt so relaxed and I really looked quite smart in the evening. It is great to combine ordinary homework, fitness and nature events."
Hot Crease (Founder of the German Extreme Ironing Section)
Beginning of 2000: the German Extreme Ironing Section (GEIS) was founded
"After returning home from New Zealand to Germany I told some of my friends about this new kind of sport and all of them were quite impressed and started it as well. That was the beginning of the GEIS (German Extreme Ironing Section)."
Hot Crease (Founder of the German Extreme Ironing Section)
Hot Crease and HGSS (High grade steel sole) did the first Extreme Ironing in Germany at a riverside in Munich.
Also this website was started to get in contact with all Extreme Ironers in Germany and all over the world.
"I don't really know how, but we've found your website and we love all that is extreme ironing. We're writing from Sydney, where we always knew our extreme sport scene was lacking and now we know what it is."
Pam Thornback, Sydney
Beginning of 2001
The GEIS did a documentary about Extreme Ironing to reach more popularity and a better understanding for the new fun sport. The first time the film was shown at Kino24 on April. The 24-hour film festival featured 24 short films. More the 800 visitors were quite interested in extreme ironing after watching the film. Then a few TV companies has shown cuttings from the film in their programs. From that moment on we get more and more members and quite a good publicity.
"I am so pleased that the film went down as well as it did. It took a huge amount of effort from the team here, and apart from anything else it was just great to see Extreme Ironing on the big screen."
Hot Crease (Founder of the German Extreme Ironing Section)
End of 2001 a world wide photo competition was started
The EIB started a world wide photo competition with more then 80 entries. An extreme ironist near London did a mountain ironing tour in Chamonix (France) and took there incredible pictures and won the competition.
"We're delighted to win the competition. It was quite an achievement to iron at such a high altitude - a world first as far as I am aware."
Iron Man Stumpy
"We were really impressed by the standard of entries we received."
Steam (Founder of the Extreme Ironing Movement)
Beginning of 2002 the first Extreme Ironing World Championships were announced
The GEIS announced the first World Championship. It will be at September 20th and 21st in munich.
