      instead of its target of 7 percent and earnings of 6 cents instead of a goal for earnings

   OVERLAND PARK (dpa-AFX) - Der US-Telekomkonzern Sprint Corp.
  gibt sein Web-Hosting-Geschäft auf und erwartet
deswegen für das zweite Quartal 400 bis 475 Millionen US-Dollar weniger Gewinn
vor Steuern. Damit würden rund 500 wegfallen, teilte Sprint am Dienstag in
Overland Park mit.

   In den zwölf Monaten bis Ende März 2003 habe das Hosting-Geschäft rund 60
Millionen Dollar Umsatz erwirtschaftet. Die Entscheidung zur Aufgabe des
Bereichs spiegele die anhaltende Überprüfung der strategischen Ausrichtung von

   SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) - Texas Instruments triggered a widespread tech sell-off
late Tuesday with its second-quarter earnings warning while Sprint and Safeway
announced workforce reductions.
Also, a spate of debt offerings melted shares of Tekelec, Guilford and Mesa Air
Group after the bell.
The Nasdaq-100 After Hours Indicator, which tracks the evening action of the
index's leading technology stocks, backed off the closing levels, down 7 points
at 1,206.
Earlier, the Nasdaq Composite recouped Monday's losses, closing up 24 points, or
1.5 percent, at 1,628. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fared almost as well,
finishing the day up 75 points at 9,055. .
TI warns, Microchip affirms
Texas Instruments shares  were halted after the chipmaker said it sees
sequential second-quarter sales growth of 5 percent instead of its target of 7
percent and earnings of 6 cents instead of a goal for earnings of 8 cents a
share. TI blamed chip sales to wireless customers.
Separately, Microchip Technology shares  gained almost 2 percent after the
chipmaker said it still expects first-quarter sales between $157 million and
$164 million.
Debt offerings melt stocks
Shares of Tekelec  fell almost 5 percent after the telecom equipment maker
announced a debt offering of $125 million in convertible notes and said that
future earnings will be cut by its recently completed Santera acquisition.
Similarly, shares of Guilford Pharmaceuticals  slipped 8 percent when the
company announced it intends to raise approximately $50 million through the sale
of five-year convertible notes.
Mesa Air Group shares  also sold off, down 11 percent after the regional carrier
announced that it would sell $75 million in convertible notes.
Sprint, Safeway cut workforce
Sprint  said it would cut 500 jobs and subtract $400 million to $475 million
from pretax profits in the second quarter to reflect the termination of the
company's Web-hosting business. Shares were little changed on the news.
Safeway  is eliminating 940 of its 7,000 administrative jobs. Half of the
positions will come from corporate offices in California and Arizona. Shares
were thinly traded.
IDT  said Liberty Media  has acquired a 5.6 percent investment in IDT's media
unit. The multinational carrier, technology and telephone company also posted a
smaller third-quarter loss on increased sales. Shares of IDT trickled slightly
lower after hours.
Lennar tops targets
Shares of Lennar  shot 2 percent higher in late third market action after the
homebuilder crushed Wall Street projections due to, among other factors,
historically low interest rates.
Fellow homebuilder Hovnanian  hit new highs last month in the wake of its
target-smashing second-quarter report.  
From the technology arena, Adobe Systems  will deliver its financials after
Thursday's close with earnings pegged to come in at 26 cents a share on just
over $312 million.
H.J. Heinz  and one-time Internet juggernaut CMGI  are also scheduled to report
later this week.
