SAVVIS to Build State-of-the Art Fiber-optic Network With 20,000 U.S. Route-miles of Fiber From Level 3, Powered by Nortel Networks Optera Solutions
HERNDON, VA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2000--SAVVIS Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: SVVS), the premier global Intelligent IP networking(SM) services provider and the No.1 performing Internet backbone(a), today announced multi-year agreements with Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) and Level 3 Communications (NASDAQ: LVLT) through which SAVVIS will establish its own fiber-optic backbone by the fourth quarter of 2001, replacing its leased-line network. The initial 20,000 route-mile redundant backbone will be comprised of 8 rings connecting 50 SAVVIS markets in the U.S., with the first two rings scheduled to be operational at the end of the fourth quarter of 2000. The network will be supported by next-generation Optical Internet Solutions and professional services from Nortel Networks. SAVVIS has the ability to purchase additional optical equipment and fiber as the network expands globally
