WASHINGTON (AFX) -- The FBI on Friday arrested Jeffrey Lee Parson for
developing and releasing a variant of the "Blaster" virus over the Internet that
infected thousands of computers this month.
At a press conference to unveil the charges, federal authorities declined to
comment if the government has learned any additional information about the
original creator of the worm.
The government charged Parson, 18, of Hopkins, Minn., on one count of
intentionally causing damage to a protected computer.
He appeared before a federal magistrate early Friday afternoon in St. Paul,
Minn. The judge placed Parson under house arrest until a Sept. 17 court
appearance in Seattle, where the charges against him were filed. He is also
restricted from accessing the Internet.
Parson, known online as "Teekid," faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a
$250,000 fine.
The U.S. attorney's office in Seattle opened the government's investigation
after the Blaster/LoveSan virus targeted a flaw in Microsoft's  Windows XP and
2000 operating systems this month. An estimated 400,000 computers worldwide were
infected.
Microsoft is based in Redmond, Wash., a Seattle suburb.
Parson is allegedly responsible for changing the virus two days after it
appeared.
According to the government's complaint, Parson admitted to an FBI agent that he
modified the Blaster worm "creating the variant known by a number of different
names including w32/Lovesam.worm.b."
It infected 7,000 individual computers and turned those computers into drones
that attacked or attempted to crack Microsoft, according to the complaint.
The worm started a "denial of service" attack against Microsoft, by sending
millions of requests for automated software updates from Microsoft, flooding the
company's computer systems.
It also directly addressed Bill Gates, Microsoft's co-founder and chief software
architect. It read: "billy gates why do you make this possible? Stop making
money and fix your software!!"
Federal agents traced Parson to a Web site he used as part of his virus program.
The Internet domain address was registered under his name.
