Insider sprechen davon, dass der anfängliche Fünf-Jahres-Vertrag mit zehn Mrd USD dotiert ist und eine Drei-Jahres-Option für jeweils zwei Mrd USD einschließt. Die Vergabe des Vertrages solle um 17.00 Uhr EDT bekannt gegeben werden, sagte Navy-Sprecher Bill Speaks. Die Navy darf wichtige Verträge nicht während der Börsenhandelszeiten bekannt geben. "Es gibt nichts größeres als diesen Vertrag", sagte Olga Grkavac, Executive Director der Information Technology Association, Rossyln. Er setze neue Maßstäbe.

Dem Auftragnehmer werden die benutzten Computer gehören, er wird sie warten und stets mit der neuesten Software bestücken. Ähnliche Verträge sollen zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt auch von der Luftwaffe und der Armee ausgeschrieben werden.




EDS wins $6.9 billion Navy contract

Technology consulting firm Electronics Data Systems (EDS) was awarded the granddaddy of all government contracts today, landing a Department of Navy intranet contract that could be worth more than $6.9 billion.

It is the largest federal information technology contract in history.


The intranet upgrade is designed to replace existing shore-based command data networks throughout the Navy and the Marine Corps, moving the department to a fee-for-service contract. EDS will take over ownership, maintenance and updating of more than 350,000 desktop computers and will tie them and about 200 existing networks into a single, secure network.


"The potential for increased efficiency, standardization, interoperability and better business processes is tremendous," said Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon, in a written statement.


EDS beat IBM (IBM), Computer Sciences (CSC) and General Dynamics (GD) for the five-year contract that includes a possible three-year extension.


The contract calls for $4.1 billion as the guaranteed minimum for the initial five-year contract. A three-year optional extension would be worth a minimum of $2.8 billion.


The cost of the contract may also grow once each of the commands identifies what options they will need added to the basic contracted services, said Navy spokeswoman Lt. Jane Alexander. It is not yet clear how much those options could cost, she said.


The actual size of the initial contract is considerably smaller than government officials had estimated early on. They had planned on the contract costing roughly $2 billion a year, Alexander said.


But the cost was driven down by competition and by better information on what each of the commands required, she said.


"This is a great triumph for EDS, the Navy and Marine Corps and the American taxpayer," said EDS Chairman and CEO Dick Brown.


The initial intranet service area will include the United States; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Puerto Rico and Iceland. The Navy said the network may be expanded elsewhere.


EDS' major subcontractors for the project will include Raytheon (RTN), MCI WorldCom (WCOM), Cisco (CSCO), WAM!NET, Dell (DELL) and Microsoft (MSFT). EDS has agreed to subcontract 40 percent of the total contract value to small businesses, the Pentagon said.

wenn man nach 2 Jahren SCM wieder auf Kaufkurs ist und zwischenzeitlich
steuerfrei 200 % hätte mitnehmen können, gehen solche
Dinge natürlich runter wie Öl. Ich hoffe aus der Vermutung wird
demnächst auch (zumindest ein bißchen) Gewißheit.

Das hört sich ja wirklich nicht schlecht an, aber ich hätte eine Frage.
Wenn dieser Auftrag nicht zu stande kommt, wäre SCM dann eurer Meinung nach auch ein Kauf? Ich bin nämlich am überlegen, ob ich einsteigen soll (Kurs sieht verlockend aus), möchte aber nicht, daß Kursentwicklnungen von so einem Großauftrag abhängen.

EDS won the hugest government networking contract ever, $7bn volume.
40% of volume will be subcontracted to smaller businesses. SCMM is a subcontractor to EDS, and has always had a good share of military-security expenditure in the US.

As one guy in Germany calculated, this contract alone should be worth at least 50-60c EPS for SCMM from 2000 onwards...

                    Using the FIT PC Card
