Gold Of The Pharaohs - An Exhibition From The Egyptian Museum In Cairo Comes To The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna

Vienna (ots) - Following the visit of the Federal Chancellor, Dr Schüssel, to the Egyptian President Mubarak, the managing director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Dr Wilfried Seipel, has met the Egyptian Minister for Culture to sign the contract for the 'Gold of the Pharaohs' exhibition. Owing to the excellent relations with the
Egyptian Antiquities Authority and the management of the National Museum in Cairo, the Austrian authorities succeeded in attracting the exhibition to Vienna, despite the problems that arose following the events of 11 September in the US. The Egyptian Minister for Culture, Dr Farouk Hosny, will attend the opening of the exhibition, which will take place in the Domed Hall of the Kunsthistorisches Museum on
Monday, 26 November.

The press conference will be held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum on Monday, 26 November at 10.30 a.m.

By means of impressive examples of ancient Egyptian jewellery, the 'Gold of the Pharaohs' exhibition aims to illustrate the fascination that, for centuries, has influenced our image of Pharaonic Egypt. In Ancient Egypt, the precious metal gold symbolized the 'flesh of the
gods'. The eternal durability of this precious metal and its bright lustre ensured the special status of gold in the consciousness of the Ancient Egyptians, and in their society and religion. Besides the early dynastic jewellery, the exhibition's main attraction features the golden bangles and rings that once adorned the queens of the Middle Kingdom. Hairbands, pectorals, bracelets and jewellery made of

semi-precious stones portray an overall sumptuous picture of Ancient Egyptian culture. Furthermore, visitors can admire funerary statues and valuable funerary offerings from Ancient Egyptian tombs. The world's most important museums have put their items of art collection at the disposal of this exhibition, including the Egyptian Museum in
Cairo, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Louvre in Paris, the Staatliche Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin, the Rijksmuseum in Leiden, the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam and the Roemer-und Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim. The special exhibition 'Gold of the Pharaohs' is the prelude to the reopening of the Egyptian and               Oriental Collection.
