U.S. Q1 productivity revised up to 1.9% gain 04.06.2003 14:32 Headlines
Workplace efficiency improved more than first reported for the first
quarter, as workers produced more but didn't increase hours, U.S. Labor
Department figures showed Wednesday. Non-farm productivity rose 1.9 percent,
more than the 1.6 percent gain first reported for the period. Factories were the
exception. There, productivity increased at a smaller 1.9 percent not the 2.1
percent first reported. Economists polled by CBS.MarketWatch.com thought
non-farm productivity probably expanded 2 percent in the revision. Productivity
improved just 0.7 percent in the fourth quarter. Overall unit labor costs were
revised down to a 2.6 percent gain from the 2.7 percent gain first reported.
