Cars boost U.S. retail sales by Rachel Koning
Financing incentives led to record monthly car purchases in October, injecting a
larger-than-expected boost to overall retail sales that month. Retail sales rose 7.1
percent in October, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. It was the
largest monthly rise since the current data series was launched in 1992. The next
closest jump was 2.2 percent in April 1993. Without the impact of car, light truck and
SUV sales, however, sales rose a tamer 1 percent in October. Sales overall fell 2.2
percent in September.
