Deal mit Microsoft ?

06.06.03 09:33
06/06/03

Points 1-3 argue that MSFT negotiating for exclusivity (a contractual element, one way or the other, of every development and publishing deal) signals that MSFT is planning to buy AKLM. That acquisition logic is only slightly less spurious than the charity option suggested (i.e. “just keeping Acclaim in business”).

How much do you think MSFT has to pay to buy exclusivity (either temporarily (e.g. Splinter Cell) or more indefinitely (e.g. GTA)? Here’s my back-of-the-envelope logic:

A top 25 game on the PS2 will sell ~2.5M units through its life in the U.S. Assume a $40 average retail price. That’s $100M. The retailer takes ~30%; Sony takes ~20%, the developer ~25%, leaving ~$25M in potential profit for the publisher. The main driver of that potential is how much it cost to sell and market the game (COGS are there, too, maybe another $2-$4 per unit?). Let’s say another $5M for $20M in contribution margin for a top-25 PS2 game.

[BTW, a top 25 game on the Xbox will sell ~700K units at an average of $45. That’s $31.5M. Assuming the same cuts as above, the publisher is left with ~$8M (maybe $5M in contribution margin). The difference of $15M for a top-25 game (U.S. only) is only one reason why developers flock to the #1 console.]

If ReVolt Live, Gladiator, and SX Superstar were guaranteed to be top 25 PS2 titles, the most Acclaim could credibly demand is $60M over the life of the titles. Now, discount that $60M by the fact that Acclaim didn’t have a top-25 title for any platform in FY’02; Acclaim’s preference for a guaranteed return from Xbox exclusivity versus hoping for a breakout PS2 title; Acclaim’s Xbox revenue from the increased units exclusivity would drive; the individual likelihood of each of the three games being a top-25 hit; and the short-term financial pressure Acclaim is facing. I bet MSFT would have had to pay less than $10M for the exclusive rights to those three titles. Since Re-volt Live is the only exclusive, I imagine any payments were even smaller. If anything, MSFT struck a limited exclusivity deal like they did with Ubi Soft and Splinter Cell.

Another way to look at it is to ask how much MSFT should be willing to pay for exclusivity. Since they make $6.3M (20% of $31.5M) from a top-25 title vs. Sony’s $20M, the only way they could compete is if the exclusive content drives more console sales and, subsequently, more titles. MSFT does enjoy a higher tie ratio than Sony so that gives them a little more leverage to close the gap but no where near enough to make (e.g. GTA) nor hold (e.g. Splinter Cell) exclusive deals if an independent developer knows it can have a hit on PS2. I think it’s this notion (MSFT only gets true exclusives from buying companies) that makes people think MSFT would be interested in Acclaim but look at the history:

Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. Signs Exclusive Deal With DC Comics to Bring Vertigo's '100 Bullets' to Next-Gen Gaming Systems
Wednesday June 11, 7:00 am ET
Award-Winning Pulp Noir Comic Universe Filled With Gritty Characters, Deadly Gun-Play and Moral Decisions

GLEN COVE, N.Y., June 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bringing the cold, hard steel action of one of today's most popular comic book series to the next-generation gaming systems, Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKLM - News), today announced that it has signed an exclusive agreement with DC Comics for the interactive publishing rights to 100 Bullets. An award-wining pulp noir comic, 100 Bullets was created by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, and chronicles the dark, moral-testing exploits of Agent Graves, a rogue member of a secret organization, who provides people with the opportunity of a lifetime -- an attache case containing the proof, the gun, and the carte blanche immunity to exact revenge on a person who's done them an irrevocable wrong.

"The 100 Bullets universe possesses all of the key elements that comprise what consumers are looking for in today's games -- great characters, deep storytelling and edge-of-your-seat action," said Marc Metis, Senior Vice President of Brand Management for Acclaim. "In keeping with its comic book origin, we will challenge players to 'think before they shoot' and allow them to explore the moral implications of their actions."

"We're exited to bring the first of VERTIGO's preeminent titles to the video game consoles," said John Nee, DC Comics, Vice President - Business Development. "This will redefine what a comic book game can be."

About 100 Bullets

Part hard-boiled crime story, part paranoid espionage thriller, 100 Bullets follows what happens when people from all walks of life meet Agent Graves, a mysterious figure who offers his "clients" the opportunity of a lifetime: an attache case containing the proof, the gun, and the carte blanche immunity to exact revenge on a person who's done them an irrevocable wrong. But who is Agent Graves? An emissary from an unknown government bureau? A rich man getting his kicks from granting people a personal justice where the judicial system has failed? Or is there something more sinister at work, a hidden framework that links his clients' personal dramas in a twisted game of shadowy conspiracies?

Written by Brian Azzarello with art by Eduardo Risso, the ongoing monthly comic book series 100 Bullets and its five graphic novels are published by the VERTIGO imprint of DC Comics. The series has won numerous comic book industry awards, including: Harvey Awards for Best Writer, Best Artist, and Best Continuing Series; and Eisner Awards for Best Continuing Series, Best Penciller, and Best Cover Artist. Gear Magazine called 100 Bullets "the latest comic sensation," while Entertainment Weekly gave the series an A-, stating it's a "revenge fantasy turned into a hard boiled comic book."

100 Bullets will be available in 2004 across the next-generation systems at suggested retail prices to be determined. For more information on this game, please visit www.acclaim.com.

Acclaim nimmt 13 Mio. Dollar auf

Der Videospielehersteller Acclaim Entertainment (Nasdaq: AKLM, WKN: 877224) hat durch eine Privatplatzierung 13 Mio. US-Dollar an neuen Mitteln aufgenommen.
