Corus Group (nyse: CGA - news - people ) Chief Executive Tony Pedder resigned Friday after the steelmaker announced a 458 million pound ($728 million) loss for what it called a "difficult and frustrating" year. According to a report in the Associated Press, the CEO's abdication is effective immediately, the company said. While no replacement was named, Chairman Sir Brian Moffat said he'd defer his own planned retirement and become full-time chairman in the interests of continuity. A planned merger with CSN of Brazil fell through in November, adding to the ferrous firm's troubles. Corus employs about 26,000 people in the U.K.--down from the pre-millenium figure of 33,000--and operates three major steel plants at Teesside and Scunthorpe in northeastern England, and Port Talbot in south Wales. Corus shares rose 7.5% to 4.32 pence (6.87 cents) on the London Stock Exchange Friday afternoon. At the start of 2000, shares had been worth 161 pence ($2.56).
