a. Includes unusual items totaling $71.8 million, or 19 cents a share. The items include a restructuring charge of about $18.6 million and a credit to doubtful accounts of $1.2 million. Excluding items, the company posted a loss of 23 cents a share. Adjusting further for a charge of about $41.2 million, or 7 cents a share, for excess and obsolete inventory, Ciena lost 16 cents a share.
Ciena Corp.'s latest third quarter includes six weeks of operations from ONI Systems Corp., acquired June 21.
A few days prior to the close, Ciena officials said the combined companies' revenue could fall "meaningfully" below Ciena's stand-alone second quarter revenue of $87.1 million on continued capital spending cuts by phone service providers.
Ciena's third-quarter total operating expenses were $120.2 million, compared with $212.9 million a year ago.
