VeriSign to Buy Guardent, Expand in Web Security
Wednesday December 17, 12:59 am ET
NEW YORK -- VeriSign Inc. (NasdaqNM:VRSN - News) said it plans to acquire Guardent Inc. in a $ 140 million cash-and-stock deal, as the company seeks to deepen its offerings in the Internet security market, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The deal will give VeriSign, of Mountain View, Calif., a stronger presence in so-called managed-security services, a field in which companies handle important information-security chores on behalf of corporate clients, such as monitoring for intruders on a company network. VeriSign has made a push into managed- security services on its own, signing up Merrill Lynch & Co. (MER) as a client this year.
The addition of closely held Guardent will give VeriSign a much larger stable of corporate clients in the managed-security business. After the acquisition is completed, the two companies said they will manage more than 2,500 security devices for corporate customers, including everything from "firewalls" designed to block hackers from accessing networks to "intrusion detection" equipment that acts as an alarm system when hackers succeed in breaking into a network.
VeriSign said the deal probably will close in the first quarter of next year.
