Report: Chain Stores Sales Rise in Oct.
Tuesday October 29, 8:57 am ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. chain store sales rose in the first three weeks of October
as cold weather stimulated demand for winter clothing, but sales slowed a little last
week, a report showed on Tuesday.
Sales rose 1.4 percent in the three weeks ended Oct. 26 compared with the same
period in September, Instinet Research said in its weekly Redbook report.
"Sales pulled back in the third week," the report said. "However, the tone of business
remains firm and October continues to outpace September."
The Redbook Average is compiled from a sample of general merchandise retailers
representing about 9,000 stores. Same-store sales measure revenue at stores open at
least a year.
The index is released weekly by Instinet Research, a division of Instinet, a
Reuters-owned electronic brokerage.
