U.S. jobless rate dips to five-month low
Friday September 6, 8:34 am ET
WASHINGTON, Sept 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. unemployment rate dipped to a five-month low in August even as the economy churned out new jobs at a slow rate, the government said on Friday.
The jobless rate fell to 5.7 percent last month, down from July's 5.9 percent and the lowest since a matching 5.7 percent in March, the Labor Department said.
But the good news on the unemployment rate -- based on a survey of households -- was tempered by some mixed news on payroll trends, which Labor tallies from a separate poll of employers.
The number of workers on U.S. payrolls grew 39,000 in August, a number that was driven entirely by government hiring and was still a mere fraction of the 100,000 to 150,000 pace of growth that economists say will be needed to signal the job market is in a solid recovery
