Stocks extended their losses on the Journal report that the U.S. warned China that North Korea may be preparing for a nuclear test and asked Chinese leaders to dissuade its neighbor from such action. The paper cited an unidentified U.S. official.

``Any increase in tension in that area would not be viewed as favorable,'' said Stephen Massocca, head of trading at Pacific Growth Equities in San Francisco. ``We're already entangled in Iraq and if we were forced to be entangled in Korea, it would not be positive.''bloomberg

Sanktionen gegen Nordkorea?

In an emergency dispatch sent last week, Washington reportedly warned
Beijing that Pyongyang was possibly planning a nuclear weapons test.
In addition, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned that she may seek UN
Security Council sanctions against Pyongyang.
"Now, we reserve the right and the possibility of going to the Security
Council, should it be necessary of putting other measures in place, should it be
necessary," she said, indicating waning confidence over the six-party talks.
North Korea has walked out of the talks, declared itself a nuclear weapons
state and vowed to beef up its nuclear arsenal.
The Korean crisis has been "totally on the backburner" during the Bush
administration, which has been willing to let the six-party talks move along at
a snail's pace with periodic efforts to put pressure on China to do more, noted
Economy of the Council of Foreign Relations.
"But again, as other issues take less precedence, the North Korean issue is
rising on the (US administration's) agenda," she said.
