WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Billionaire investor Warren Buffett reported holding an 8 million share stake in clothing retailer Gap Inc. (GPS) as of Dec. 31, 2000, according to a Schedule 13F that was denied confidential status and released Monday by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
As reported, on a Feb. 15 filing with the SEC, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRKA) said it had moved its holdings in First Data Corp. (FDC), US Bancorp (USB), Gap and Nike Inc. (NKE) to a confidential 13F filing from the public 13F filing.
A confidential 13F may be held by the SEC for up to one year at the request of the filer to limit severe market reaction. According to Monday's filing, the SEC denied the request for confidential treatment on March 23.
However, despite stating that the stake in Gap had moved from the public 13F to the confidential 13F, Buffett never revealed the stake owned in Gap.
According to other attempted confidential 13Fs released Monday, Buffett owned 2.4 million shares of Gap as of June 30, 2000, and raised the stake to 8 million shares as of Sept. 30, 2000.
Also revealed in the filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2000, is a 21.5 million share stake in retailer Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST) valued at $709.7 million.
The stake in the warehouse retailer increased to 24.1 million shares as of Sept. 30, 2000, valued at $842.6 million.
As of June 30, 2000, the billionaire investor reported holding just under 5 million shares of aerospace and defense company General Dynamics Corp. (GD) worth almost $260 million.
Buffett raised his investment in metal and mining company Nucor Inc. (NUE) during the three months ended June 30, 2000, to 3.4 million shares valued at $114 million. Previously, Buffett reported owning 1.27 million Nucor shares worth $63.4 million as of March 31.
The investor added to his holdings in Nucor during the three months ended Sept. 30, 2000, for holdings of 3.6 million shares valued at $109.3 million.
As of Sept. 30, 2000, Buffett opened a new stake in GPU Inc. (GPU), owning 4.9 million shares of the utility valued at $159.6 million.
