----------------------------(Jan 27)---------------------------
*Australian stocks won't receive much encouragement from Wall
Street, where blue chips only just managed to close in positive
territory on Wednesday, and investors generally are treading
water until Australia's central bank makes a decision on interest
rates, next week.
*U.S. stocks ended mixed on Wednesday as gains in financial
services firms, partly due to lower bond yields, were offset by a
drop in leading technology companies on concern that their sales
growth may be slowing.
*ADRs: News Corp 41 ¯ (unch), BHP 24 15/16
(-5/16), WMC 20 ¾ (-3/16), National Australia Bank
73 ® (+3/16)
*Gold futures ended flat on Wednesday, nonplussed by
Tuesday's UK gold auction results. Meanwhile, base metals ended
mostly lower, with copper knocked down by fund liquidation.

STOCKS TO WATCH
* Company name ASX code closing price (change)

*National Australia Bank A$22.28 (-.42)
Analysts expect National Australia Bank's first quarter
earnings, due for release Thursday, to show a net profit rise of
up to seven percent, with a range of A$750 million to A$774
million. The year-ago first quarter net profit was A$724 million.
Based on Barra's Global Estimates consensus for NAB's full year
profit to end-September 2000 of A$2.984 billion, the stock is
trading on a prospective price earnings ratio of 11.9 against
14.9 for Commonwealth Bank which rules its books off at June 30
and 12.4 for Westpac.

*Telstra Corp A$7.88 (-.02)
Australia's biggest telecommunications company, Telstra Corp
Ltd, was unlikely to take much interest in a deregulated
Singapore market, analysts said. Telstra has a small presence in
Singapore, serving business customers. The company said in
response to last Friday's deregulation announcement that it was
too early to say if operations might be expanded but noted the
policy change "does change the picture significantly".
